Computer Simulation of Branching Pattern in Magnolia denudata Desr. (백목련의 분지형에 관한 Computer Simulation)

  • The observation of branching pattern on Magnolia denudata Desr. was performed from July 1982 to September 1983 and then computer simulation was carried out. Tree crown pattern depends on not genetic factors but also environmental factors and the determination of branchin pattern which characterized it appears to properly explain the relationships such as branching pattern and allocation of materials through the analysis of influence branches under several assumptions. Now that computer simulated simulated pattern was considered as the accumulation of two factors which controled the growth, it was represented as the stimulated tree which differs in branching rate that described allocation of material necessary for the growth of each branch. There was a tendency of allocation ratio of nutrients, i.e. subbranch to main branch to decrease by the passage of year. Under assumption that branch was branched when accumulated material reached 1, it was possible to represent the allocation of nutrients are residual $nutrient{\times}\frac{1}{1+F};in main; branch, ; residual; nutrient{\times}\frac{F}{1+F}$ in subbranch, A(iA, iC)+$F^(iA-1)$ in current twig. Like this, the basic minute difference of the allocation of nutrients according to the branch resulted in complicated patterns in the tree crown.

  • The safety factor of an infinite slope tends to be analyzed as lower when the effects of root cohesion are not considered into the equation. Thus, it is essential to consider regional characteristics such as root cohesion and crown density in order to obtain a reasonable safety factor value. In this study, The safety factor of the landslide model, both before and after considering crown density and root cohesion, was calculated and a comparative analysis was carried out. The safety factor is increased by the effect of roots cohesion of the analysis results, the amount of increase in safety factor along the inclination of the slope angle has been analyzed with various things, the effect of reinforcing the roots cohesion, slope of the lower angle it was found that the higher the safety factor increase.

  • Experiments were carried out to find the difference of resin canal numbers by tree age and topophysis of crown of black pine needles, and the results were summarized as follows. 1. The average numbers of resin canal by tree age were increased from the age of 5 years were not difference between 10 and thereafter years significantly. 2. In this observation, the range of resin canal number was 2 to 9. 3. The numbers by the topophysis of crown did not show significant differences but the individual trees showed significant variations in the canal number in younger trees.

  • The requirements for the successful treatment of all-ceramic restorations are not so different from the ones of conventional restorations. "The provisional restoration followed by an adequate tooth reduction and the accurately fitting prostheses with corresponding to final impression" can be the examples of them. Nevertheless, the one which all-ceramic restorations are distinguished from conventional restorations is the additional procedure of so called "bonding". In addition to the application of resin cement between "inner surface of restoration and outer surface of abutment", bonding technology can be also applied to the treatment process of "Post and Core" in particular if the abutments are non-vital teeth. Core build-up for all-ceramic crown is conducted with fiber post and tooth colored composite by considering the properties of the restorations transmitting light. We know well that a vital abutment is easier than a non-vital one to get the targeted goals for clinical success in connection with esthetics and structure. The creation of "Post and Core" with bonding technique is a decisive factor for a long-term success if the abutment is non-vital tooth with dentinal collapse. I would like to share my clinical experience about "post & core build-up and all-ceramic restoration bonding" out of several success strategies of all-ceramic crown with this presentation.

CLINICAL AND STATISTICAL STUDIES ON FIXED BRIDGE (가공의치의 임상 통계적 연구)

  • An investigation was made Into 1,357 fixed bridges which had been performed at the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry, Seoul National University Hospital from 1973 to 1979. The purpose of this investigation was to establish a basic reference of the treatment with fixed bridges by obtaining statistical conclusions from the data concerning the patients who had been treated with fixed bridges. The following conclusions were obtained; 1. The ratio of the fixed bridges made on the maxillae to those made on the mandible was 1:1. 2. The cases of fixed bridges with one pontic were the most frequent, i.e., 946 cases out of total 1,357 cases, which were 69.7% of the total. 3. As the number of missing teeth increased, the number of the relevant cases of fixed bridges decreased. 4. The most frequent age group of the patients who had been treated with fixed bridges was the twenties, which was 40.8% of the total. As the age of the patients increased, the number of corresponding cases of fixed bridges decreased. 5. Most of the fixed bridges with more than three pontics were made at the anterior portion samely on the maxilla and on the mandible. 6. As for the retainers, the porcelain fused to metal crown and the partial veneer crown were frequently used at the anterior portion, while the full veneer crown was frequently used and the inlay and the attachment were used in some cases at the posterior portion. The locations of fixed bridges in the order of their frequency were: canine, lateral incisor, second bicuspid, central incisor, second molar, first bicuspid, first molar, and third molar on the maxilla; second bicuspid, second molar, first bicuspid, first molar, canine, third molar, lateral incisor, and central incisor on the mandible.

Major causes of failure and recent measurements of tunnel construction (터널시공 중 붕락발생 원인과 최신 보강기술)

  • During the tunnel construction the major failure mode can be categorized as: tunnel failure just after the tunnel excavation without support, failure after application of shotcrete and finally failure after setting the concrete lining. The failure mode just after the tunnel excavation without support, can be further classified as : bench failure, crown failure, face failure, full face failure, failure due to weak strata and failure due to overburden. Moreover the failure after application of shotcrete is classified as heading face failure, settlement of shotcrete support, local failure of shotcrete lining and invert shotcrete. To find out the major causes of tunnel collapse, the investigation was done in case of the second phase of Seoul subway construction. The investigation results depicted that the major causes of tunnel collapse were due to the weak layer of rock/fault and sudden influx of ground water from the tunnel crown. While the investigation results of the mountain road tunnels construction have shown that the major causes of tunnel failure were inadequate analysis of tunnel face mapping results, intersection of faults and limestone cavities. In this paper some recent measurement in order to mitigate such tunnel collapse are presented

Screening of immunoactive ingredients in frequently consumed food in Korea

  • The objectives of this study were to find out the plant to enhance immune activity among 42 kinds of foods frequently consumed by the Korean elderly consisting of 5 food groups and 5 wild plants. Each sample was assessed the immunoactive effect by measuring $NF-{\kappa}B/AP1$ gene expression, nitric oxide and cytokine production in $RAW-Blue^{TM}$ cell. Soybean sprouts of 47 plants showed the highest $NF-{\kappa}B/AP1$ gene expression at the level of $1.13{\pm}0.03$ (O.D. 650 nm) and Soritae, sweet potato, banana, apple, garlic, crown daisy, cabbage and Ailanthus altissima also had high activity of $NF-{\kappa}B/AP1$ gene in $RAW-Blue^{TM}$ cell stimulated by LPS. NO production of Ailanthus altissima was significantly higher than that of other plants and 16 plants of glutinous sorghum, black rice, Seoritae, Heuktae, sweet potato, banana, apple, garlic, mungbean sprouts, spinach, crown daisy, young pumpkin, cabbage, soybean sprouts, Actinidia arguta and Aster scaber were the next best activity. The above results selected 17 out of 47 plant samples. Moreover, soybean sprouts was significantly shown to increase $TNF-{\alpha}$ ($1,509.55{\pm}1.38pg/mL$) and $IL-1{\beta}$ ($54.56{\pm}1.08pg/mL$) cytokines in comparison with RAW-Blue cell stimulated by LPS. According to the results of in vitro evaluation, the ethanol extract of soybean sprout increased the production of immune-enhancing cytokines by proliferation of macrophages. In addition, $NF-{\kappa}B$ transcription factor activity and NO production ability were excellent, and it was selected as a material having excellent immunological activity.

A Numerical Study on the NATM Tunnel Reinforcement using Centrifuge Model Experimental value (실험값을 이용한 NATM 터널의 보강효과에 관한 수치 해석적 연구)

  • In this study, in the first place, parameters primarily influencing displacement and stress were constructed by using the Finite Difference Method; then using those parameters, the result of crown displacement and convergence among the existing, experimental values of a centrifuge model were compared with the result of numerical analysis; and then considering the stress and time effect of lining installation, parameters according to the difference of stiffness were studied. In the result of this study, it found out that rough, ground reinforcement effect manifests itself when reinforcement propert of the grouting of the big scale steel pipe through 3-D analysis is E= 4,000tf/m2 which of the stiffness of the original ground.

Neural-based Blind Modeling of Mini-mill ASC Crown

  • Neural network can be trained to approximate an arbitrary nonlinear function of multivariate data like the mini-mill crown values in Automatic Shape Control. The trained weights of neural network can evaluate or generalize the process data outside the training vectors. Sometimes, the blind modeling of the process data is necessary to compare with the scattered analytical model of mini-mill process in isolated electro-mechanical forms. To come up with a viable model, we propose the blind neural-based range-division domain-clustering piecewise-linear modeling scheme. The basic ideas are: 1) dividing the range of target data, 2) clustering the corresponding input space vectors, 3)training the neural network with clustered prototypes to smooth out the convergence and 4) solving the resulting matrix equations with a pseudo-inverse to alleviate the ill-conditioning problem. The simulation results support the effectiveness of the proposed scheme and it opens a new way to the data analysis technique. By the comparison with the statistical regression, it is evident that the proposed scheme obtains better modeling error uniformity and reduces the magnitudes of errors considerably. Approximatly 10-fold better performance results.

Review on the downfall of Konbaung Dynasty: A Case Study of Myingyun-MyingonDaing Rebellion and Its Effects

  • This study reexamines a covert factor of the colonization of Myanmar kingdom, drawing on the case of Myingyun-MyingonDaing Rebellion broke out in 1866. It criticizes that existing discussions on the downfall of the Konbaung dynasty are preoccupied with post-colonialism. These researches were focus on macro level and pointed out the imperialist stratagem and many scholars concluded for the down fall of Konbaung Dynasty that the wave of Imperialism as Sunami hit from Europe to Asia so that Myanmar could not stand as feudal society and down fall Konbaung Dynasty. All of events and comments were quite true but it is necessary to examine carefully past events. There were many controversial facts about third Anglo-Myanmar war. This paper has pointed out the Kings Mindon's false political strategic due to the lack of awareness on external threat with the giving the best example of Myingun-MyingonDaing rebellion.
