Berlin standard activator in the treatment of growing patients with mandibular deficiency: Case report (성장기 하악골 열성장 환자의 Berlin standard activator를 이용한 부정교합 치료: 증례보고)

  • Activator is a removable functional appliance used for correcting the skeletal Class II malocclusion in children with the mandibular deficiency. Berlin standard activator modified from Andresen activator has following characters; do not cover the palatal surface for tongue space, relief on lingual surface of mandibular incisors and resin capping 1/3-1/2 of crown height on mandibular incisors for preventing labioversion of mandibular incisors, L-hook between maxillary lateral incisor and canine for anterior high pull headgear, relief on mandibular posterior bite block for differential eruption of posterior teeth. Two cases presented here had a mandibular deficiency and slight maxillary protrusion. First case (an 11-year-old girl) treated with Berlin standard activator and anterior high pull headgear for 13 months followed by fixed orthodontic appliance for another 29 months. Second case (a 12-year-old boy) treated with Berlin standard activator for 6 months followed by fixed appliance for another 24 months. Treatment results showed a significant improvement in sagittal skeletal and occlusal relationship without premolar extraction. Mandibular condyles were concentric in TMJ [ossa, and masticatory muscle activities were normalized after treatment. In the retention period facial harmony and occlusal stability was maintained.

  • Implant assisted removable partial denture (IARPD) has been practiced in various forms for a long time, and among them, implant surveyed crown RPD is gaining predictability as well as being considered as a treatment option for patients with anatomical and financial disadvantages. The position of implant could be divided as posterior placement or anterior placement according to the purpose of the treatment and should be planned in consider to the alveolar ridge of patient, anticipated prognosis of remaining teeth, and opposing dentition. This case report describes a treatment for mandibular Kennedy class I partial edentulous patient with two implant-supported surveyed crown and implant assisted removable partial denture. Given the difficulty of posterior placement in this patient and the prognosis of the residual teeth, the plan was to place two implants in close proximity to the residual teeth, which were placed in the planned position, angle, and depth using guided surgery. The process of fabricating the fixed prosthesis was carried out in parallel with the maxillary edentulous tooth arrangement process to increase predictability, and when fabricating the localized tooth, the implant was designed in a form that allows the patient to perform functional movements by preventing excessive loading as the last supporting tooth, and was fabricated through a secondary impression process. Each treatment procedure was proceeded as planned, with aesthetically and functionally satisfactory results for both patient and operator.

AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON THE FRACTURE STRENGTH OF CLASS II POSTERIOR RESTORATIONS (II급 와동에서 각종 구치용 수복물의 파절강도에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fracture strength of class II restored premolars with amalgam, posterior composite, amalgam - Ketac silver, resin - Ketac silver restorations at marginal ridge. Fifty extacted maxillary and mandibular premolar teeth that were caries free, fracture free, and restoration free were selected and randomly divided into five groups : Group 1 : 10 intact teeth, Group 2 : 10 teeth with class II cavities and restored with, amalgam, Group 3: 10 teeth with class II cavities and restored with posterior resin, Group 4 : 10 teeth with class II cavities and restored with amalgam - ketac silver, Group 5 : 10 teeth with class II cavities and restored with resin - Ketac silver. All teeth were mounted in base of dental stone within metal rings of 2cm diameter, exposing only the crown portion. Class II mesio - occlusal or disto - occlusal cavities were prepared into specimens of Group 2 through 5 by using a No. 710 fissure bur. The occlusal portion was prepared to a faciolingual width of 1.5mm and a pulpal depth of 1.5mm. The proximal protion was prepared to a faciolingual width of 4mm, a occlusogingival height of 4mm, and a gingival floor of 1.5mm. The teeth in Group 2 and 3 were resotored with silver amalgam apd posterior resin respectively. In Group 4 and 5, proximal portions were first filled with Ketac silver 1.5mm gingivally and remaining cavities were restored with amalgam and posterior resin respectively. All specimens were stored in 100 % relative humidity at $37^{\circ}C$ for 48 hours before testing. All teeth were subjected to a compressive load in a Universal Instron Testing Machine at marginal ridges. The loads required to fracture the restorations were recorded in killograms and the data obtained were subjected to statisticall analysis. The results were all follows : 1. The fracture strength of Group 1 which were unprepared were $100{\pm}10.1\;kg$ and the higher values than Group 2, 3, 4, 5 which were prepared and resotred. 2. In restored groups, Group 2 had the higher fracture strength($81.8{\pm}12.4\;kg$) than other groups and Group 4 had the lowest fracture strength($66.8{\pm}9.2kg$). 3. There were significant differences between fracture strength of between Group 1 and Group 3, 4, 5(P<0.05), but not significant difference between fracture strength of Group 2, 3, 4, 5(P>0.05).

  • In a case of class III skeletal patients with severe alveolar bone resorption, it must be a complete denture treatment plan provided stable and durable occlusion. Despite a markedly increased tooth mobility and unfavorable crown-to-root ration due to periodontal tissue breakdown, if the inflammatory process is controlled and an adequate oral hygiene performed, fixed splints will be considered. Patient's discomfort will be eliminated by achievement better clinical tooth mobility using fixed splints. So it can be a cost and time effective treatment option. In this case, it used a T-Scan System for confirmation a bilateral balanced occlusion and a occlusal force distribution reflected a patient's functional mandibular movement.

  • It is difficult to make an artificial central incisor similar to natural tooth. All ceramic porcelain of this patient is not esthetic, and there is gingival recession due to ill-fitted margin. She has class II division 1 occlusion, so upper central incisors is labioversed. Upper light central incisor is well-characterized but the yellowish brown color of dentin is appeared on the incisal third portion of the central incisor. At 1st trial, the shape and characterization of restoration is good but shade is little dark. At 2nd trial, the shape is better but patient complained on black triangle of mid interdental space, so mesiocervical portion of restoration is overcontoured to compromise the black triangle. Completed metal ceramic crown is in harmony with the adjacent central incisor in aspect of shape, shade, and characterization.

  • The purpose of this study was to understand the geographical and environmental distribution of wild animals in Baekdudaegan region using field survey and GIS data. Crucial factors were selected and analyzed to understand the distributional characteristics of wild animals (7 species in 6 families) and rare endemic plants (14 species in 11 families). These crucial factors include stand factors (forest type, DBH class, and crown density), soil factors (bed rock, soil texture, and organic matter), geographical factors (elevation, slope, aspect) and climatic factors (temperature, rain fall, humidity). Finally, 10 factors were selected by statistical analysis and categorized for analyzing geographical and environmental features. Four families such as Muridae, Sciuridae, Suidae and Talpidea in wild animal showed the similar habitat characteristics with the 10 factors.

  • The ion exchange resins were synthesized from 1-aza-18-crown-6 macrocyclic ligand attached to styrene (2th petroleum in 4th class hazardous material) divinylbenzene (DVB) copolymer with crosslinks of 1%, 6%, and 15% by substitution reaction. These synthetic resins were confirmed by chlorine content, elementary analysis, surface area, and IR-spectrum. The object of this study was to seperate the metal ion absorbed in reinforcement water fire extinguishing agent. As the results of the effects of pH, equilibrium arrival time, and crosslink of synthetic resin on metal ion adsorption for resin adsorbent, the metal ions were showed high adsorption at pH 3 or over and adsorption equilibrium of metal ions was about 2 hours. In addition, adsorption selectivity for the resin in water was the order of Al (III) > Ni (II) > Sm (III) ions, adsorbability of the metal ions was in the crosslinks order of 1%, 6%, and 15%.

  • This study examined e-resources usage among polytechnic students in Southwest Nigeria. A descriptive research design was adopted for this study and the population consisted of polytechnic students from The Polytechnic, Ibadan and Federal Polytechnic, Ede. There were 9671 students from both polytechnics. A multi-stage sampling technique was employed with a sample fraction of 5% was drawn from the total number of students in each faculty amounting to 381. A structured questionnaire was the major instrument used for data collection and the questionnaire was pre-tested using Cronbach-alpha to determine the reliability co-efficient. Data obtained was analyzed using SPSS. The study found that the students from both polytechnics are aware of the e-resources and that the e-resources were mainly used for research, class assignment and to update knowledge. The problem such as epileptic power supply, poor internet connection and so on was identified. The study concluded that polytechnic students could benefit immensely from the enormous usage of e-resources particularly for teaching, learning and research. Based on the findings, recommendations were made.

A Study on the Wearing Occasions of the Royal Attire in Joseon Dynasty through the Regular rule of Sang-uiwon ("상방정례로" 보는 조선왕실의 복식구조 - 착용사례를 중심으로 -)

  • The Regular rule of Sang-uiwon served as a manual of Royal Attires. According to the procedures, like as making letters about the affairs, consulting, and permission, Royal ceremonial attire was made and presented to the royal family. The materials for the Royal informal dress were presented in accordance with usual tributes. There was no difference in informal dress between the royal family and noble class. But the name of items was different such as Goa du[man's jacket], Go ui[woman's jacket], etc. The royal family continued to wear old days dress as akjurm and noui, which were not worn by common people any more, as a means of differentiating clothes. Bub-bok, which was designed only for key figures of the royal family such as the king, crown prince, queen, and crown princess, was the best status symbol. Because of its highly limited example of wearing, bub-bok was the authority of the wearer itself; with only difference in color, pattern, and material depending on social status. Yong-po is the most frequently worn by the Royal men. Yong-po worn with jong-lip served as yung-bok or gun-bok, and iksun-gwan functioned as sang-bok. Royal Attire for men was clearly divided into Yong-po as sang-bok, bub-bok as myun-bok and gangsa-po, while jeok-ui for women functioned as both sang-bok and bub-bok. However, the use of jeok-ui was defined by differentiate sang-bok from bub-bok like as the pattern of Hyung-bae, number of embroidered round badges, shoes and ornaments.

Photoelastic stress analysis of the mandibular unilateral free-end removable partial dentures according to the design (하악 편측 유리단 가철성 국소의치의 설계에 따른 광탄성 응력 분석)

  • Statement of problem: There are common clinical cases in which the mandibular first and second molars are missing unilaterally. Purpose: This study was designed to compare and evaluate the magnitude and distribution of stress produced by four kinds of mandibular unilateral free-end removable partial dentures that could be applied clinically in Kennedy class II cases. Material and methods: Four unilateral free-end removable partial dentures using clasp, Konus crown, resilient attachment, and flexible resin were fabricated on the photoelastic models of the Kennedy class II cases. The vertical load of 6㎏ was applied on the central fossa of the first molar of every removable partial denture in the stress freezing furnace and the photoelastic models were frozen according to the stress freezing cycle. After these models were sliced mesio-distally to a thickness of 6mm, the photoelastic isochromatic white and black lines of the sliced specimens were examined with the transparent photoelastic experiment device and photographs were taken with a digital camera. The fringe order numbers at eight measuring points in the photograph were measured with the naked eye. Results: The maximum fringe order number of each sliced specimen and the fringe order number at the residual ridge just below the loading point were in the decreasing order of the unilateral removable partial dentures using flexible resin followed by clasp, resilient attachment, and Konus crown. The fringe order number at the root apex of the second premolar was in the decreasing order of the unilateral removable partial dentures using clasp followed by flexible resin, Konus crown, and resilient attachment. Conclusion: The removable partial denture using Konus crown showed the most equalized stress distribution to the supporting alveolar bone of abutment teeth and residual ridge under the vertical loads. The removable partial denture using flexible resin can be applied to the case that has a better state of residual ridge than abutment teeth.
