In this study, a low-heat additive with a crosslink structure was dispersed in asphalt to simultaneously lower the production temperature of, and to modify the asphalt binder. This low-heat additive was prepared by different feeding ratios of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) and polyvinylchloride (PVC) as polymer modifiers, and ZnO as a crosslinking agent. In order to confirm the crosslinking density and compatibility of the crosslink structured low-heat additive with asphalt, surface free energy, swelling ratio, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) parameters were carefully investigated to examine this relationship, and the role of the crosslink structured low-heat additive. In addition, by measuring the penetration and softening point of the asphalt binder, it was confirmed that it corresponds to PG 64-22. With increasing ZnO in the crosslink structured low-heat additive, the swelling ratio decreased, leading to an increase in crosslinking density. The crosslink structured low-heat additive and the asphalt binder were found to be compatible with each other by DSC and SEM analysis.

A three-dimensional, porous collagen/chitosan complex sponge was prepared to closely simulate basic extracellular matrix (ECM) constitutes, collagen and glycosaminoglycan. The complex sponge was prepared by a lyophilization method and had the regular network with highly porous structure, suitable for cell adhesion and growth. The pores were well interconnected, and their distribution was fairly homogeneous. The complex sponge was crosslinked using 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) to increase its boilogical stability and enhance its mechanical properties. The crosslinking medium has a great effect on the inner structure of the sponge. The homogeneous, porous structure of the sponge was remarkably collapsed in an aqueous crosslinking medium. However, the morphology of the sponge remained almost intact in a water/ethanol mixture crosslinking milieu. Mechanical properties of the collagen/chitosan sponge were significantly enhanced by EDC-mediated crosslinking. The potential of the sponge as a scaffold for tissue engineering was investigated using a Chinese hamster ovary cell (CHO-K1) line.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) microbeads were synthesized by dropping 0.5 wt% of sodium hyaluronate dissolved in NaOH into 0.2 vol% of divinyl sulfone dissolved in 2-methyl-1propanol at a speed of 0.005 ml/min. HA microbeads were collected from a divinyl sulfone crosslinker solution stirred at 200 to 400 rpm for 5 h at temperatures from room temperature to $60^{\circ}C$ at intervals of $10^{\circ}C$. The crosslinked microbeads were then cleaned thoroughly using distilled water and ethanol. SEM results revealed that the microbeads were white-colored spheres. The 3-D porous network structure of the microbeads became dense with an increase in the crosslinking temperature; however, no dependence of the crosslinking temperature on the microbead size was detected. The extent of swelling decreased from 970% to 670% with an increase in the crosslinking temperature from room temperature to $60^{\circ}C$, most likely due to the increase in the degree of crosslinking.
Chitosan has reactive amino and hydroxyl groups which can be used to chemically alter its properties under the mild reaction conditions. Thus the cationization of Tencel with Chitosan is effective to modify the fabric. To investigate the modified properties of Tencel fabric, the tests were performed under the several finishing process with enzyme/glutaraldehyde/softener. The internal structure of Tencel which has the structure of cellulose II wasn't changed by enzyme, chitosan and crosslinking agent treatment and the thermal stability was improved by chitosan and crosslinking agent treatment. Wrinkle recovery angle under the dry condition increased highly until $0.1\textrm{mol}/\ell$ of glutaraldehyde concentration, and then decreased. Tensile strength of modified Tencel fabric decreased with increasing of weight loss, but it was improved more or less by chitosan, crosslinking agent and softener. Moisture regain was improved by enzyme and chitosan treatment. And antibacterial activity showed nearly 100% on Tencel fabric treated with 0.5% chitosan and adsorption of metal ion increased with increasing of chitosan concentration.
It is important in the durable water and oil repellent finishing for wool fabric what kinds of water-repellent agents will be used. Water repellent agents and its concentration were aleady chosen in the previous paper, one of the crosslinking agents which has less damages(harsh handle or yellowing) to the treated fabrics was a low molecular weight urethane-based resins(eg. Elastron BN-11). In repellent finishing, fabrics were padded in a bath which contained aqueous solution of water-repellent agents, and crosslinking agents, and wetting agents, followed by drying and curing. The most suitable treating condition for excellent repellency and durability to dry-cleaning was as follows : Fabrics are padded at liquor pick-up ratio of 50%, with aqueous solution which contained $30g/\ell$ of water-repellent agents, and $1g/\ell$ of crosslinking agents, and 40g/s of wetting agents. And the padded fabrics were dried at $110^\circ{C}$ for 1 minute, and cured at $160^\circ{C}$ for 1 minute. For the fabrics, water and oil repellencies and durability to repeated dry-cleanings were observed. For enhancing the durability to dry-cleaning, the role of crosslinking agents was important for they bonds water-repellent agents and fibers to 3-dimensional net structure. Therefore, the most suitable drying and curing conditions should be selected according to the kinds of crosslinking agents.
Five solution styrene butadiene rubber/neodymium butadiene rubber (SSBR/NdBR) composites were manufactured using different ratios of SSBR and NdBR. In this study, the composites were reinforced with NdBR and silica to confirm the physical properties of SSBR used for treads of automobile tires and the dispersibility with silica. The morphologies of the rubber composites were observed using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The crosslinking behaviors of the composites were tested using a rubber process analyzer (RPA), and the abrasion resistances were tested using a National Bureau of Standards (NBS) abrasion tester. The hardness values, tensile strengths, and cold resistances of the composites were also tested according to ASTM standards. Increased NdBR content yielded composites with excellent crosslinking properties, abrasion resistances, hardnesses, tensile strengths, and cold resistances. The crosslinking point increased due to the double bond in NdBR, thereby increasing the degree of crosslinking in the composites. The NdBR-reinforced composites exhibited excellent abrasion resistances, which is explained as follows. In SSBR, a breakage is permanent because a resonance structure between styrene and SSBR forms when the molecular backbone is broken during the abrasion process. However, NdBR forms an additional crosslink due to the breakdown of the molecular backbone and high reactivity of the radicals produced. In addition, the low glass transition temperature (Tg) of NdBR provided the rubber composites with excellent cold resistances.
This work is aimed to clarify the effect of only crosslinking of polyethylene on the water tree propagation and thus the crosslinking of LDPE was made by use of $Co^{60}$$\gamma$-ray irradiation at room temperature. For this purpose, before water tree testing under same test conditions, injection molded samples were made of LDPE using CNRS laboratory model and also some of them were irradiated under different dose rate for crosslinking. Afterwards, the aged specimens were put into microscopic investigation as a mean to compare their different morphological aspects by use of SEM for the fractured surface. The SEM observation points out that the untreed region in the irradiated PE shows the densed structure whereas that in the LDPE is not closely packed. Also in the water treed region of LDPE, the density and the dimension of voids are higher than those in irradiated PE. Based on our results, it seems that the difference in the PE structure could sufficiently contribute to cause the different water tree propagation of these materials.
