Mechanisms of Pretilt Angle Generation on the New Photo-crosslinkable Polymers (새로운 광중합 가능한 폴리머의 프리틸트각 발생의 메카니즘)

  • The mechanisms of pretilt angle generation for a nematic liquid cystal (NLC) using a photodimerization method with obliquely polarized UV exposure on the various new photo-crosslinkable polymer were studied. A good thermal stability of all the photo-crosslinkable polymers was obtained by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) measurement until 450$\^{C}$. High pretilt angle of the NLC was observed by polarized UV exposure on the three kinds of the photo-crosslinkable polymers containing biphenyl(BP), decyl(de), and cholesteryl(chol) group, respectively. However, the low pretilt angle of the NLC was measured by obliquely polarized UV exposure on the two kinds of the photo-crosslinkable polymers containing fluorine and chalcone group. Consequently, the high NLC angle generated is attributable to the biphenyl and alkyl moieties, and photo-dimerized chalcone group of the photopolymer.

  • In this research, we synthesized various photo-crosslinkable polyimide based polymers. The control of pretilt angles for a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) using the photodimerization method on the photopolymers was studied. A good thermal stability of the photopolymers was measured by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) measurement until 450C. High pretilt angles of the NLC were otained by polarized UV exposure on the photopolymers containing biphenyl (BP), decyl (de), and cholesteryl (chal) groups, respectively. However, low pretilt angles of the NLC were measured by polarized UV exposure on the photopolymers containing fluorine and chalcone groups. The high NLC pretilt angles generated are attributable to the biphenyl and alkyl moieties, and the photodimerized chalocone group of the photopolymers. Additionally, good voltage-transmittance and response time characteristics were observed by UV exposure on the photopolymers.

  • We synthesized a new photo-crosslinkable polymer (polyimide (PI)-chalcone-biphenyl (BP)) and liquid crystal (LC) aligning capabilities for nematic (N) LC with obliquely polarized UV exposure on a photo-crosslinkable polymer were studied. The high pretilt angle in NLC was obtained by polarized UV exposure on a PI-Chal-BP surface for 3 min. The high pretilt angle generated in NLC is attributed to the biphenyl moieties and the photo-dimerized chalclone group of a photopolymer. Also, good thermal stability of a PI-Chal-BP were obtained by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) measurement until 450$^{\circ}C$. Finally, good voltage-transmittance curves and response time were observed by UV exposure on a PI-Chal-BP surface for 3min.

  • We synthesized a photo-crosslinkable polymide (polymide (PI)-chalcone-biphenyl (BP)) based polymer and control of pretilt angle for a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) using two kinds of the photodimerization methods by polarized UV exposure the photopolymer surfaces was studied. Pretilt angle of the NLCs using a conventional photodimerization method could be varied between 0$^{\circ}$ and 3$^{\circ}$, by controlling the condition of UV exposure. Pretilt angle of the NLCs using the conventional photodimerization method was higher than a in-situ photodimerization method.

UV-Curable Fluorinated Crosslinkable Polyurethane-Acrylates for Marine Antifouling Coatings

  • To prepare UV-curable polyurethane-acrylate oligomer, NCO-terminated urethane prepolymers with trimethylolpropane, [TMP; 0 (0), 0.1 (0.021) and 0.2 (0.043) mole (mole fraction)] as crosslinkable tri-functional chain extender were end-capped with pentaerythritol triacrylate [PETA; 2.0 (0.400), 1.7 (0.354) and 1.4 (0.304) mole (mole fraction)] with one hydroxyl group/three vinyl functionalities. The stable as-formulated UV-curable polyurethane-acrylates [stable mixtures of PETA-capped oligomer/reactive acrylic monomer diluents without/with heptadecafluorodecyl methacrylate (PFA; 0, 6 and 9 wt%)] were formed up to 0.2 (0.043) mole (mole fraction) of TMP content in the prepolymer, while homogeneous-mixing failed at 0.3 (0.068) mole (mole fraction), in which the crosslink density in NCO-terminated urethane prepolymer was too high to enable the formation of stable mixture. This study examined the effect of TMP/PETA molar ratio and heptadecafluorodecyl methacrylate (PFA) content (wt%) on the properties of UV-cured polyurethane-acrylates as marine antifouling coating materials. The properties of UV-cured polyurethane-acrylate were found to be significantly dependent on the crosslinkable TMP/PETA ratio and PFA content. With the increasing of the TMP and PFA contents, the contact angles increased, and consequently the surface tension decreased. The adhesion of algae/barnacles to PFA contained film samples were found to be sufficiently weak to allow their easy removal. These results suggest that the UV-cured samples containing PFA have strong potential as coating materials for antifouling applications.
