  • 1. The flux for hydrophilic CA membrane is higher than that for hydrophobic PES membrane at any operating conditions. The difference in bpth fluxes becomes greater as the water recovery is lower. 2. Backwash pressure should be more than twice as high as filtration pressure in order to maintain the higher flux. Backwash frequency is independent of the flux when the UF is operated under the same water recovery. 3. The relatively lower crossflow velocity of around 0.1 m/s would be appropriate because of the lower energy consumption per treated water. 4. The membrane fouling occurring at high turbidity and high concentration of organic compounds in raw water can reduce the flux and increase the removal of the organic compounds. 5. It is confirmed by the pilot plant testing that the UF by using the CA membrane module was well applicable to the drinking water treatment.

  • In Kimchi (a salt-pickled and fermented food) manufacturing industry, the process of brining and rinsing the raw vegetable produces a vast amount of wastewater of high salinity. Instead of expensive and low-efficient conventional treatment system, brining wastewater reuse system was developed using hybrid chemical precipitation/microfiltration. In the microfiltration of chemically treated brining wastewater, comparison of flux, backwashing frequency and energy consumption was made between dead-end and crossflow filtration mode. The optimum location of neutralization step in this system was also discussed in connection with the microfiltration performance. The quality test of Kimchi prepared by the reuse system confirmed the new approach was successful in terms of water/raw material(salt) saving and wastewater reduction.

  • A two-dimensional turbulence model for the surface discharge of heated water into cross-flow field has been developed. The depth-averaged continuity, momentum and temperature equations, are solved by an efficient finite-difference procedure known as SIMPLE. Turbulent stresses and heat fluxes are determined from a depth-averaged version of the $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$ equation. Results of test run clearly demonstrate its effectiveness in handling strong turbulent phenomena in very shallow near-field region.

  • This study treats the numerical analysis of performance and design for plume abatement wet/dry cooling tower with a dry type heat exchanger. A two-dimensional analysis is performed using the finite volume method for mechanical draft counterflow and crossflow tower. For a coupling problem between water and air system, a turbulent two phase flow is considered. The Effectiveness-NTU method is used for modeling of the dry type heat exchanger. The parametric simulations such as the relative flowrate of air and attachment length of an air mixer are performed to examine the effect on plume abatement. It is found that if the relative air flowrate ratio and the adequate air mixer type are chosen well in addition to the ratio of water to air flowrate, the loss of cooling capacity and the additional cost are reduced and the plume is abated.

  • Thermal fluid mixing behavior during a postulated medium-size hot leg break loss of coolant accident is analyzed for the international comparative assessment study on pressurized thermal shock (PTS-ICAS) proposed by OECD-NEA. The applicability of RELAP5 code to analyze thermal fluid mixing behavior is evaluated through a simple modeling relevant to the problem constraints. Based on the calculation result, the onset of Thermal stratification is investigated using Theofanous's empirical correlation. Sensitivity calculations using a fine node model and crossflow model are also performed to evaluate the modeling capability on multi-dimensional characteristics related to thermal fluid mixing.

  • 1. Introduction : In microfiltration the transport, deposition and removal of particles control cake formation on a filter. In this connection a new model on cake formation, based on the wall shear stress, was tested here in comparison with experiments of fine particle slurry under Taylor-vortex flow. The model expresses the deposition process for particles as two first-order steps in series of mass transfer and adhesion, and their removal process as a linear relation to the wall shear stress. This embraces characteristics of both dead-end and crossflow filtration. The correlation resulting from fitting to experimental data represented the experimental data reasonably well. This study will be helpful in analyzing fouling in heat exchangers.

  • A crossflow finned tube evaporator has been investigated using tube-by-tube method. The refrigerant flows inside tubes while the air passes outside the finned tue. R134a for a refrigerant and wet air were used in this analysis. Three refrigerant circuitries, complex or simple, were compared. The effects of refrigerant circuitry and airside condensation on thermal performance such as heat transfer rate, enthalpy of refrigerant, temperature of refrigerant and air, pressure of refrigerant and average condensate layer thickness were investigated. It was found that this method could be applied to the analysis of finned tube evaporator for dehumidification and air conditioning.
