  • The buckling problem of linearly tapered micro-columns is investigated on the basis of modified strain gradient elasticity theory. Bernoulli-Euler beam theory is used to model the non-uniform micro column. Rayleigh-Ritz solution method is utilized to obtain the critical buckling loads of the tapered cantilever micro-columns for different taper ratios. Some comparative results for the cases of rectangular and circular cross-sections are presented in graphical and tabular form to show the differences between the results obtained by modified strain gradient elasticity theory and those achieved by modified couple stress and classical theories. From the results, it is observed that the differences between critical buckling loads achieved by classical and those predicted by non-classical theories are considerable for smaller values of the ratio of the micro-column thickness (or diameter) at its bottom end to the additional material length scale parameters and the differences also increase due to increasing of the taper ratio.

  • The effect of temperature gradient between the substrate and ambient gas on the structural characteristics of GaN nanorods grown on r-plane sapphire substrates by hydride vapor phase epitaxy was investigated. The density, diameter, and length strongly depended on the tempearture gradient. In addition, the cross-sectional shape of the nanorrods at the end of growth was found to be more dependedent on the temperature of a substrate itself than the temperature gradient.

  • In this paper, a high-temperature superconductor(HTS) current lead operating in current sharing mode is described. The minimum heat dissipation and the optimum safety factor(cross-sectional area) is obtained analytically for partial current sharing HTS leads. It is assumed that the current lead is in conduction cooled state, and the sheath material is the alloy of silver and gold. The reduced cross-sectional area results partial current sharing state, and consequently reduces conduction heat transfer, but the Joule heat generation is increased. The optimized HTS current lead is different from the conventional copper leads. In the copper leads, the minimum heat dissipation is obtained for the zero gradient of temperature at warm end. However, the temperature gradient at warm end is not zero when the HTS lead operates at minimum dissipation state.

  • Aerodynamic characteristics of three-dimensional wings in ground effect for Aero-levitation Electric Vehicle(AEV) are numerically investigated for various fairing shapes at the junctions of 3D Wings. Numerical results show that a sizeable three-dimensional comer flow separation occurs with formation of an arch vortex at the junction of main and vertical wings, and also that this is predicted the main cause of the high lift-to-drag(L/D) reduction rate of the main wing. To avoid the comer flow separation, the main idea of this study is to reduce the cross section gradient of the comer flow tube near the trailing edge for various fairing shapes. Improvements on L/D ratios of the wings are pursued by breaking the coherence of superimposed adverse pressure gradients at the wing junction when the cross section gradient is changed slowly at the trailing edge.

  • For the purpose of investigating the impulsive noise at the exit of high-speed railway tunnel and the pressure transients inside the tunnel, experiments were carried out using a shock tube with an open end. A great deal of experimental data were obtained and explored to analyze the peak pressures and maximum pressure gradients in the pressure waves. The effects of the distance and cross-sectional area ratio between two-continuous tunnels on the characteristics of the pressure waves were investigated. The peak pressure inside the second tunnel decreases for the distance and cross-sectional area ratio between two tunnels to increase. Also the peak pressure and maximum pressure gradient of the pressure wave inside the second tunnel increase as the maximum pressure gradient of initial compression wave increases.

  • We have been developing a new magnetic filter so that small sized paramagnetic substances can be separated even in a low magnetic field (lower than 2T). The developed filter is a packed ferromagnetic filament with a triangular cross section. The filament has a diameter of 120 ㎛ and a length of 3 mm, and is mechanically packed with a volume ratio of 17.6%. Using this filter, a magnetic separation experiment of hematite was carried out using a superconducting magnet at the field of 2T. Similarly, magnetic separation was performed using a conventional magnetic filter. It became clear that the separation efficiency of newly developed filter is high as that of conventional mesh filter. The smaller sized hematite (<3 ㎛) could be separated though conventional mesh filter could not separate.

  • A thermally stimulated current measurement using a temperature gradient (TG-TSC) has been applied to the study of dipolar depolarization in polymers. It has been clarified that theoretical analysis of TG-TSC in the initial rise region corresponds with the experimental results. We conclude that the experimental results on a cross-linked polyethy-lene (XLPE) film can be explained using the above relation and that the charasteristics obtained from the above theoretical analysis can be used for ascertaining the presence of a constant temperature gradient in a film.

From the experimental results on a cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) film is found that the TSC peaks of the trapped carriers in C peak are due to the negative polarity which is electron and the ionic carriers having negative polarity show D peak.

  • An expression for the cross covariance of the logconductivity and the head in nonstationary porous formation is obtained. This cross covariance plays a key role in the inverse problem, i.e., in inferring the statistical characteristics of the conductivity field from head data. The nonstationary logconductivity is modeled as superposition of definite linear trend and stationary fluctuation and the hydraulic head in saturated aquifers is found through stochastic analysis of a steady, two-dimensional flow. The cross covariance with a Gaussian correlation function is investigated for two particular cases where the trend is either parallel or normal to the head gradient. The results show that cross covariances are stationary except along separation distances parallel to the mean flow direction for the case where the trend is parallel to head gradient. Also, unlike the stationary model, the cross covariance along distances normal to flow direction is non-zero. From these observations we conclude that when a trend in the conductivity field is suspected, this information must be incorporated in the analysis of groundwater flow and solute transjport.
