  • An efficient method to solve the minimum weight design problem for frame structures subjected to stress and displacement constraints is presented. The different cross-sectional shapes are conside red in order to apply engineering design in which usually required custom fabrication. To increase the efficiency of the optimization process, the structural response quantities(nodal forces, displacements) are linearized with respect to cross-sectional properties or their reciprocal, based on first order Taylor series expansion, while cross-sectional dimensions are considered as design variables. Numerical examples are performed and compared with other methods to demonstrate the efficiency and reliability of approximation method for frame structural optimization with different cross-sectional shapes. It is shown that the number of finite element analysis is greatly reduced and it leads to a highly efficient method of optimization of frame structures.

  • In this study the occlusion of dural-sac. the outer membrane of spinal cord in the lumbar region. was quantitatively analyzed using one motion segment finite element model. Occlusion was quantified by calculating cross sectional area change of dural-sac for different compressive impact duration (loading rate) due to bony fragment at the posterior wall of the cortical shell in vertebral body. Dural-sac was occluded most highly in the range of 8∼12 msec impact duration by the bony fragment intruding into the spinal canal. $\Delta$t = 400 msec case 4 % cross sectional area change was calculated. which is the same as the cross sectional area change under 6 kN of static compressive loading.

  • Purpose - Low fertility rate is a serious problem, and this study analyzes factors affecting total fertility rate using panel data from 16 metropolitan cities and provinces in Korea from 2000 to 2022. Design/methodology/approach - Estimating the SAR model considering the weak cross-sectional dependence that exists in variables related to the regional total fertility rate, and using the DKSE estimation method considering the strong cross-sectional dependence. Findings - Estimation results considering weak and strong cross-sectional dependence were similar, confirming the robustness of the results. Female labor force participation rate has a positive effect on total fertility rate, and employment rate has no effect. However, the interaction term is a negative (-) sign. Crude marriage rate has a positive effect on total fertility rate, and apartment price has a slightly positive effect. Environmental factor has no effect, and policy factor has a negative effect. Research implications or Originality - In order for an increase in the female labor force participation rate to lead to an increase in the total fertility rate, qualitative improvements in female employment must be made. Financial investment policies for childbirth must increase their effectiveness. The problem of low fertility rate requires not only population policy but also social, economic, cultural, environmental, and policy conditions to be considered.

  • This study deals with roughing planning by cross sectional information generated from sculptured surfaces. Bicubic Bezier surface is adopted as sculptured surfaces in this paper. The system consists of 3 pstyd : 1) modeling sculptured surface, 2) reconstruction of cross-section in 2D coordinates, 3) determination of roughing tool path with structural data. The system is developed by using BIM-PC in the environment of Auto CAD R11, AutoLISP and MetaWare C. The proposed system shows an efficient algorithm for roughing planning with cross sectional information.

  • The more integrated and smaller SMD are needed, new solder joints packaging technologies are developed in these days such as BGA(Ball Grid Array), Flip Chip, J-lead etc. But, it's unable to inspect solder joints in those devices by visual inspection methods, because they are hided by it's packages. To inspect those new SMD packages, an X-ray system for acquiring a cross-sectional image of a arbitrary plane is necessary. In this paper, an analysis for designing X-ray cross sectional imaging system is presented including the way for correcting the distortion of image intensifier. And we show computer simulation of that system with a simple PCB model to show it's usefulness in applying PCB solder joint inspection.

  • A reliable analytic model that determines the cross sectional shape of a workpiece(material) in round-oval(or oval-round) pass sequence has been developed. the cross sectional shape of an outgoing workpiece is predicted by using the linear interpolation of the radius of curvature of an incoming workpiece and that of roll groove to the roll axis direction. The requirements we placed on the choice of the weighting function were to ensure boundary conditions specified. The validity of the analytic model has been examined by hot rod rolling experiment with the roll gap and specimen size changed. The cross sectional shape and area of a workpiece predicted by the proposed analytic model were good agreement with those obtained experimentally. It was found that the analytic model has not only simplicity and accuracy for practical usage but also save a large amount of computational time compared with finite element method.

  • An efficient algorithm automatically determining cross sectional properties of thin-walled beams is developed using the minimum information about geometry of the cross section. This scheme is applied to automatic calculation of normal and shear stress distribution corresponding to stress resultants as well as sectional constants for complex open and closed thin-walled sections. Numerical examples evaluating section constants and stress distributions is presented and compared with the available reference's results.

  • High-Tc superconducting current leads with multi-step and continually varied cross-sectional area are studied to reduce heat leak into cryostat and material use. Assuming conduction-cooled lead the cross-sectional area is reduced along the heat flow direction according to the increase of critical current density which increases with decreasing temperature. In this study, we also analyze the multi-step cross-sectional area High-Tc current leads. The multi-st데 current leads changes the cross-sectional area to have constant safety-factor at changed section. The heat leak into cryostat, total voume, safety-factor and the temperature profiles are compared to those of the constant safety-factor current leads. The developed methods are applied to the Bi-2223 superconductor sheathed with Ag-Au alloy.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the hypertrophic effects of low-intensity exercise on weight, myofibrillar protein content and Type I, II fiber cross-sectional area of hindlimb muscles of rats between every other day exercise and every day exercise. Methods: Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to 1 of 3 groups: control group (C, n=6), experimental group 1 (E1, n=7) and experimental group 2 (E2, n=7). Rats in E1 group had 7 sessions (every other day) and those in E2 group had 14 sessions (every day) of exercise in which they ran on a treadmill for 30 min/day at 10 m/min. Results: Muscle weight, cross-sectional area of type I fiber and myofibrillar protein content of soleus and myofibrillar protein content of plantaris in E1 group, and myofibrillar protein content of soleus and cross-sectional area of type I fiber of plantaris in E2 group were greater than those in C group. Cross-sectional area of type I fiber of soleus of E1 group was higher than E2 group while cross-sectional area of type I fiber of plantaris of E2 group was higher than E1 group. Conclusion: Hypertrophy of hindlimb muscles occurs from every other day exercise similar to every day exercise.

  • OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to measure the minimal cross-sectional areas and volumes of the pharynx in snoring patients and normal subjects and to see if there is an increase in the minimal cross-sectional areas and volumes of the pharynx with advancement of the mandible. METHODS: The pharyngeal computed tomography and 3-dimensional reconstruction were used to measure the cross-sectional areas and volumes of the nasopharynx, oropharynx, and hypopharynx with the jaw in normal position and in protrusive position in 7 patients with snoring and 7 control subjects while they were awake. RESULTS: The oropharynx was revealed to have the most narrow site in the pharynx and there was a tendency for the snorers to have a smaller nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal cross-sectional area than normal subjects but not statistically significant. There were no significant differences in the volumes of the nasopharynx and oropharynx between the two groups. With advancement of the jaw the minimal cross-sectional area of oropharynx was significantly increased, and the volume was also increased but not significantly. The minimal cross-sectional areas and volumes of nasopharynx as well as hypopharynx were not significantly influenced by the advancement of the mandible. CONCLUSIONS: There was a tendency for snorers to have a smaller oropharynx than normal subjects and the oropharyngeal lumen was increased with the advancement of the mandible in both snorers and normal subjects.
