  • Background: Isotopes of the projectile may be produced along the beam path during the irradiation of a target by a heavy ion due to inelastic interactions with the media. This study analyzed the production cross-section of carbon (C) and Helium (He) projectile's isotopes resulting from the interactions of these beams with different materials along the beam path. Materials and Methods: In this study, we transport C and He ion beams through different materials. This transportation was made by the Monte Carlo simulation. Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS) has been used for this calculation. Results and Discussion: It has been found that 10C, 11C, and 13C from the 12C ion beam and 3He from the 4He ion beam are significant projectile's isotopes that have higher flux than other isotopes of these projectiles. The 4He ion beam has a higher projectile's isotope production cross-section along the beam path, which adds more impurities to the beam than the 12C ion beam. These projectile's isotopes from both the 12C and 4He ion beams have higher production cross-sections in hydrogenous materials like water or polyethylene. Conclusion: It is important to distinguish these projectile's isotopes from the primary beam particles to obtain a precise and accurate cross-section result by minimizing the error during measurement with a nuclear track detector. This study will show the trend of the production probability of projectile's isotopes for these ion beams.

  • We attempted to evaluate the effectiveness of cold blood potassium cardioplegia [Group B] compared with that of intermittent aortic cross clamp with topical hypothermia [Group A] in each six dogs. The studies were performed under the extracorporeal circulation with moderate hypothermia by using Mongrel dogs. 1. In Group A [6], it was difficult to maintain the temperature below 20?. but in Group B [6], it was possible to maintain the temperature. 2. In blood pressure and myocardial recovery ability, Group B was more excellent than Group A. 3. There was no significant difference in Na+, Ca++ and Cl- between both groups, but in K+ level, Group A was mild decreased and Group B was nearly normal level. 4. In serum LDH level, Group A was higher than Group B, but in SGOT level there was no significance between both groups. 5. On electromicroscopical study, Group A showed severe change in mitochondria, but Group B was nearly normal view. Thus we suggest that cold blood potassium cardioplegia would be more effective than intermittent aortic cross clamp with topical hypothermia for myocardial protection in open heart surgery.

  • RNA silencing has had a large impact on biology in general, as well as on our understanding of plant-pathogen interactions, especially interactions between plants and viruses. While most of what we know about the mechanism of RNA silencing was deduced in the last 12 years, many of the interactions between plants and viruses, as well as virus-virus interactions in plants, which we now know are manifestations of RNA silencing, were the subject of decades of work from numerous laboratories. These laboratories were examining the nature and extent of phenomena such as recovery from infection, the formation of dark green islands resistant to re-infection, synergy between unrelated viruses and cross-protection between related viruses, all first described in the late 1920s. In this review, the relationships between these phenomena and their place in the defense mechanism we call RNA silencing will be described, to show how they are all linked.

  • Experimental data have been obtained on the neutron elastic scattering cross sections for 55, 65 and 75 MeV neutrons, and non-elastic scattering cross sections for 40 to 80 MeV neutrons using the $^7Li(p,n)$ neutron source at TIARA of Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute and the TOF method. Data were obtained for C, Si, Fe, Zr, and Pb of natural elements. Elastic scattering data were obtained for 25 laboratory angles between 2.6 and 53.0 that clarified the angular distributions and angle integrated values. The data obtained were compared favorably with recent LA150 data library.

  • One hundred fifty four our of 262 isolates of Fusarium oxysporum obtained from healthy plant tissues of various crops and their rhizosphere soil were found to be nonpathogenic to cucumber plants. The nonpathogenic isolates were frequently found from sesame plant tissues and rhizosphere soil, but less from healthy plant tissues of cucumber and water melon. When the 154 nonpathogenic isolates were preinoculated into cucumber seedlings, and then challenge-inoculated with Fusarium wilt pathogen, 21 isolates protected effectively cucumber plants from Fusarium wilt infections. A year later, 9 out of 21 isolates fully sustained their protective effect. Among 9 isolates showing good protective effects, 7 were isolates from cucumber plants. These 9 isolates except 1 isolate, were not pathogenic to water melon, chines melon, tomato and sesame.

  • The concept design of Flexible Seal for thrust vector control of solid motor was performed. Through the concept design, the optimum pivot point of flexible seal, cross-section configuration of flexible seal and thermal protection system from combustion gas was decided. The pivot point of flexible seal has aft pivot type and cross-section view is conical type. For satisfying a spring torque rate, the shear modulus of rubber has the value of under about 0.6MPa and failure shear stress has over about 2.5MPa.

  • We investigate the rate-compatible punctured convolutional (RCPC) codes concatenated with hierarchical QAM for designing a cross-layer unequal error protection scheme for H.264 coded sequences. We first divide the H.264 encoded video slices into three priority classes based on their relative importance. We investigate the system constraints and propose an optimization formulation to compute the optimal parameters of the proposed system for the given source significance information. An upper bound to the significance-weighted bit error rate in the proposed system is derived as a function of system parameters, including the code rate and geometry of the constellation. An example is given with design rules for H.264 video communications and 3.5-4 dB PSNR improvement over existing RCPC based techniques for AWGN wireless channels is shown through simulations.

  • Background: Heat energy produced in nuclear reactors and nuclear fuel cycle facilities interactions modifies the physical properties of the shielding materials containing water content. Therefore, in the present paper, effect of the heat on shielding effectiveness of the concretes is investigated for gamma and neutron. The mass attenuation coefficients, effective atomic numbers, fast neutron removal cross-section and exposure buildup factors. Materials and Methods: The mass attenuation coefficients, effective atomic numbers, fast neutron removal cross-section and exposure buildup factors of ordinary and heavy concretes were investigated using NIST data of XCOM program and Geometric Progression method. Results and Discussion: The improvement in shielding effectiveness for photon and reduction in fast neutron for ordinary concrete was observed. The change in the neutron shielding effectiveness was insignificant. Conclusion: The present investigation on interaction of gamma and neutron radiation would be very useful for assessment of shielding efficiency of the concrete used in high temperature applications such as reactors.
