  • A suggestion has been made for neutron dosimetric techniques using activation and threshold detectors in criticality accidents. Neutron dosimetrical parameters, namely, the fission spectrum-averaged cross-sections of some threshold reactions and fluence-to-dose conversion factors have been calculated by the use of an electronic computer. It appears that detectors having comparatively high threshold energy give more fine information on spectral deformation in criticality accidents, while detectors with low threshold energy are of usefulness for measuring fast neutron fluence regardless of fissioning types. Unexpectedly it is found that the fission spectrum-averaged cross sections of the $^{32}S(n,\;p)^{32}P$ reaction is not sensitive to analytical forms of fission neutron spectrum: the modified Cran-berg and Maxwellian forms. In addition, the fluence-to-dose conversion factors seem to be insensitive to both spectral functions and fissioning types.

  • This study was conducted to select low toxic insecticides against natural enemies, and to evaluate resistance stability and cross-resistance to resistance strain for the fulfillment of integrated pest management development. Toxicity of imidacloprid and spinosad to Amblyseius cucumeris was relatively low regardless of the adopting test methods. In addition, those to the Amblyseius fallacis was also low by slide dipping method. The slide dipping method was useful to eliminate repellency effect by mites to the tested insecticides. Mortality of A. fallacis to deltamethrin recorded in 1994 and 1999 was 21.6% and 7.4%, respectively. Meanwhile, the permethrin-resistanct strain of A. fallacis was maintained its resistance to deltamethrin. However, the cross-resistance to the newly introduced insecticides namely imidacloprid, fipronil, chlorfenapyr, abamectin, and spinosad. was relatively low.

  • Criticality analyses of the KSC-1(Korean Shipping Cask-1) spent fuel shipping cask have been performed with the help of KENO-IV Monte Carlo computer code and 19-group CSLIB 19 cross section set which was generated from AMPX modular system. The analyses followed a benchmark calculation which has been made regard to the B & W CX-10 criticality facility in order to validate the Monte Carlo code cross section set described above. The KSC-1 shipping cask seems to be safe in the criticality point of view for the transport of one PWR spent fuel assembly under the normal conditions as well as the hypothetical accident conditions.

  • The nuclear criticality of the KSC-4 shipping cask which can load four assemblies of PWR spent fuel was analyzed using KENO-IV computer code and 19-group nuclear cross section set generated from 218-group neutron cross section library(DLC-43/CSRL) using AMPX system. In accordance with 10CFR71, the analysis was performed for fresh fuel assemblies, instead of the spent fuels, under both norml transportation and hypothetical accident conditions. The calculated maximum multiplication factors(Keff) of the KSC-4 cask were 0.85289 and 0.94185 for the normal transportation and hypothetical accident conditions, respectively. The highest Keff of the KSC-4 cask is within the subcritical limit prescribed in l0CFR71 and accordingly the KSC-4 cask is safely designed in terms of nulear criticality.

  • Background: Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is a useful medicinal and oil crop in Korea. However, when safflower is cultivated, the flowering period overlaps with the rainy season, and seed maturation is poor. Therefore, this study aimed to use basic research data to develop superior varieties using agronomic characteristics and crossing method. Methods and Results: A total of 34 safflower germplasms were sown and their agronomic characteristics were investigated. Based on these investigations, the cultivar 'ui-san-hong-hwa' was selected as the mother plant, and 'Myanmar safflower' (Hsu Pan) was selected as the father plant. In addition, we developed a floret-protecting cap to cover florets after emasculation during the artificial crossing. When florets were protected by the cap, the seed setting rate increased in comparison to that in the non-covered florets. Conclusions: Agronomic characteristics can contribute to developing suitable varieties. The results suggest that the protection cap will be helpful in breeding without the floral organ drying. This study contributes an efficient breeding method to develop new safflower varieties.

  • Purpose: The development of vaccines that confer protection against multiple avian influenza A (AIA) virus strains is necessary to prevent the emergence of highly infectious strains that may result in more severe outbreaks. Thus, this study applied reverse vaccinology approach in strategically constructing messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine construct against avian influenza A (mVAIA) to induce cross-protection while targeting diverse AIA virulence factors. Materials and Methods: Immunoinformatics tools and databases were utilized to identify conserved experimentally validated AIA epitopes. CD8+ epitopes were docked with dominant chicken major histocompatibility complexes (MHCs) to evaluate complex formation. Conserved epitopes were adjoined in the optimized mVAIA sequence for efficient expression in Gallus gallus. Signal sequence for targeted secretory expression was included. Physicochemical properties, antigenicity, toxicity, and potential cross-reactivity were assessed. The tertiary structure of its protein sequence was modeled and validated in silico to investigate the accessibility of adjoined B-cell epitope. Potential immune responses were also simulated in C-ImmSim. Results: Eighteen experimentally validated epitopes were found conserved (Shannon index <2.0) in the study. These include one B-cell (SLLTEVETPIRNEWGCR) and 17 CD8+ epitopes, adjoined in a single mRNA construct. The CD8+ epitopes docked favorably with MHC peptidebinding groove, which were further supported by the acceptable ∆Gbind (-28.45 to -40.59 kJ/mol) and Kd (<1.00) values. The incorporated Sec/SPI (secretory/signal peptidase I) cleavage site was also recognized with a high probability (0.964814). Adjoined B-cell epitope was found within the disordered and accessible regions of the vaccine. Immune simulation results projected cytokine production, lymphocyte activation, and memory cell generation after the 1st dose of mVAIA. Conclusion: Results suggest that mVAIA possesses stability, safety, and immunogenicity. In vitro and in vivo confirmation in subsequent studies are anticipated.

  • This study is to analyze and evaluate copyright protection environment in digital reproduction and transmission, find out problems involved. and suggest recommendations for improvement. Data was collected 50 libraries to which digital reproduction and transmission is permitted under the Copyright Act were surveyed to examine the present states of digitalization and the systems employed. Also, library users, sampled from 5 libraries carrying out all the 6 technical measures obliged by the Copyright Act, were surveyed to examine their use of digital materials and perception on the copyright. After reviewing descriptive statistics, frequency and cross-tabulation analysis were made. The results of the analysis are most of the libraries. except for the industry university libraries, have implemented digital library systems, but the introduction rate of both digital reproduction system and transmission system are high (68.0% and 84.0%. respectively), while that of copyright protection system was low (26.0%). 84.0% of the libraries surveyed digitalize the full text, but the Libraries have digital collection less than 5,000 items, and only 33.3% of them digitalize materials with securing the copyrights. Regulations on copyright protections are not obliged properly. and it appeared that not only users' perception and perception of copyright as well as their use of electronic books are relatively low.

  • We have explored the importance of two ATP binding domains of Hsp104 protein in protection of yeast cells from cadmium exposure. In the previous study we have discovered that the presence of two ATP binding sites was essential in providing heat sh ock protection as well as rescuing cells from oxidative stress. In this paper we first report wild type cell with functional hsp104 gene is more resistant to cadmium stress than hsp104-deleted mutant cell, judging from decrease in survival rates as a result of cadmium exposure. In order to demonstrate functional role of two ATP binding sites in cadmium defense, we have transformed both wild type (SP1) and hyperactivated ras mutant (IR2.5) strains with several plasmids differing in the presence of ATP binding sites. When an extra copy of functional hsp104 gene with both ATP binding sites was overexpressed with GPD-promoter, cells showed increased survival rate against cadmium stress than mutants with ATP binding sites changed. The degree of protection in the presence of two ATP binding sites was similarly observed in ira2-deleted hyperactivated ras mutant, which was more sensitive to oxidative stress than wild type cell. We have concluded that the greater sensitivity to cadmium stress in the absence of two ATP binding sites is attributed to the higher concentration of reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by cadmium exposure based on the fluorescence tests. These findings, taken all together, imply that the mechanism by which cadmium put forth toxic effects may be closely associated with the oxidative stress, which is regulated independently of the Ras-cAMP pathway. Our study provides a better understanding of cadmium defense itself and cross-talks between oxidative stress and metal stress, which can be applied to control human diseases due to similar toxic environments.

  • This paper describes the process of developing a concrete median barrier of SB4 grade with anti-glare function. The development section has a height and width of 1,270mm and 560mm, respectively. A wire mesh is placed in the center of the cross section to improve the protection performance. Collision analysis predicted that this section satisfies the strength and occupant protection performance, and that no damage to the barrier occurs. In the actual collision test, it was confirmed that this section satisfies the strength and occupant protection performance. However, damage was observed on two concrete barrier when the truck crashed. In order to improve the accuracy of the collision analysis of the concrete barrier in the future, it is considered that a study on the model development and continuous collision analysis method for domestic commercial vehicles should be carried out.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to predict rabies protective behaviors (RPB) based on protection motivation theory (PMT) among fourth-grade students at schools in Chonburi Province, Thailand. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from December 2020 to February 2021. A multistage sampling technique was used for sample selection. The questionnaire was divided into socio-demographic data and questions related to PMT and RPB. Descriptive statistical analysis was conducted using the EpiData program and inferential statistics, and the results were tested using the partial least squares model with a significance level of less than 5%. Results: In total, 287 subjects were included, of whom 62.4% were girls and 40.4% reported that YouTube was their favorite media platform. Most participants had good perceived vulnerability, response efficacy, and self efficacy levels related to rabies (43.9, 68.6, and 73.2%, respectively). However, 54.5% had only fair perceived severity levels related to rabies. Significant positive correlations were found between RPB and the PMT constructs related to rabies (β, 0.298; p<0.001), and the school variable (S4) was also a predictor of RPB (β, -0.228; p<0.001). Among the PMT constructs, self efficacy was the strongest predictor of RPB (β, 0.741; p<0.001). Conclusions: PMT is a useful framework for predicting RPB. Future RPB or prevention/protection intervention studies based on PMT should focus on improving self efficacy and response efficacy, with a particular focus on teaching students not to intervene with fighting animals. The most influential PMT constructs can be used for designing tools and implementing and evaluating future educational interventions to prevent rabies in children.
