  • In this paper the accumulation of local damage during the cyclic loading in reinforced high-strength concrete columns is experimentally investigated. Two identical column specimens with annular cross-section and spiral reinforcement were designed and two tests, up to failure, under the action of a constant vertical concentrated force and a time-dependent concentrated horizontal force, were carried out at the LNEC shaking tables facility. Sine type signals, controlled in amplitude, frequency and time duration were used for these experiments. The concept of local damage based on local stiffness degradation is considered in detail and illustrated by experimental results. The specimens were designed and reinforced in such a way that the accumulation of damage was predicted by dominating deformations (cracking and crushing of the concrete) while the increasing of the loading values was a dominating factor of damage. It was observed that the local damage of HSC columns has exposed their anisotropic local behaviour. The damage accumulation was slightly different from the expected in accordance with the continuum damage concept, and a partial random character was observed.

  • Aerodynamic shape optimization is very useful for enhancing the performance of wind-sensitive structures. However, shape parameterization, as the first step in the pipeline of aerodynamic shape optimization, still heavily depends on empirical judgment. If not done properly, the resulting small design space may fail to cover many promising shapes, and hence hinder realizing the full potential of aerodynamic shape optimization. To this end, developing a novel shape parameterization scheme that can reflect real-world complexities while being simple enough for the subsequent optimization process is important. This study proposes a machine learning-based scheme that can automatically learn a low-dimensional latent representation of complex aerodynamic shapes for bluff-body wind-sensitive structures. The resulting latent representation (as design variables for aerodynamic shape optimization) is composed of both discrete and continuous variables, which are embedded in a hierarchy structure. In addition to being intuitive and interpretable, the mixed discrete and continuous variables with the hierarchy structure allow stakeholders to narrow the search space selectively based on their interests. As a proof-of-concept study, shape parameterization examples of tall building cross sections are used to demonstrate the promising features of the proposed scheme and guide future investigations on data-driven parameterization for aerodynamic shape optimization of wind-sensitive structures.

  • Gaston Bachelard had a revolutionary progress in the field of human understanding by proposing his theory of image and imagination. His theory of the new image was so powerful, almost all areas of human science, particularly that of literary criticism, were strongly influenced and this influence continues until today. Today almost everyone accepts his theory of the image without much objection, but not rarely asked where began his transfer from the philosophy of science to the images. We propose a hypothesis that the beginning of the new concept of Bachelard's image was inspired by studies of contemporary science, especially quantum mechanics. The Heisenberg's uncertainty principle was the core of quantum mechanics, and opens new perspectives on the material world. We could summarize the message of the uncertainty principle : the material world is made up of various layers, and the material can not be measured by the location and movement at the same time. So we must have a new point of view of another dimension to know this material world. Bachelard had accepted this view of Heisenberg and developed his own theory of epistemological rupture. What is revolutionary in the theory of Bachelard's image is the fact that he looked at the images with the new perspective. The human psyche is another world compared to the rational world that dominates our daily lives. Bachelard insists that the image can not be explained by the concept. The fantasy world is a totally different world to that of rationality. That is why it can not be explained by the language of rationality as the concept. The imaginary world exists independently of the real world, but it is superimposed on the real world. These two worlds are influencing each other, and it is between these two world where our daily lives continues. The declaration of Bachelard 'image is a specific reality' is never a metaphor or rhetorical expression. This is an ontological expression that must truthfully. The imaginary world is a world built on the image and it works according to its own law. It is not a representation or copy of the real world. But the world of imagination are not alone. It exists in the same time and space with the world of science. It is superimposed with the world of science. Both two world influence each other. Bachelard has made a revolutionary change by studying the images. He gave them their own place. It has changed the views on the images that were treated as mere representations of reality. Thanks to him, the image can have its own value, that of a factor that creates reality. Bachelard shows how we can go deep into the source of being and the universe if we look at the pictures with the eyes of other dimensions.

  • This article is a follow-up on the concept of philosopher/writer and its transformation in the Age of Enlightenment - 1. the dictionary meaning of the term 'philosopher/writer' and the origins of 'literary fields' of the Enlightenment era. In this article, we analyzed changes in the literary field in the late $17^{th}$ century after the expansion of the publishing market. We examined the conflict surrounding philosophers' identifying between modern and traditional philosophers. We have validated that the formation of new readers has made traditional philosophers more sensitive to the 'horizon of expectations' of readers. Some biographical works are also one of our concern. By the end of the $17^{th}$ century, philosophers and writers suddenly became objects of biographical works unlike in the past. Through our research, we found that readers have sought the arrival of a new hero, a great philosopher or a great writer, that will lead a new era, and due to this anticipation, it has led to the publication of biographical works. In this process, we have revealed conceptual changes about authors, writers, philosophers, and so on. In the next article, we will continue advanced discussion on the concept of philosopher/writer.

  • This paper comparatively considered how Korea and Japan address the concept of 'postwar' in descriptions of their literary history. In Japan, 'postwar' refers to the period after World War II (Asia-Pacific War). This word implies a variety of contexts such as collapse, poverty, confusion, calendar reform, reconstruction and restoration as well as a series of historical events such as war, war defeat, and American occupation; and so it has been treated in Japanese society a significant period. In the history of Korean literature, it is after national liberation that the word 'postwar' appeared; however, it has usually indicated 'the period after the Korean War.' The question is that although the term of postwar refers to periods after different wars, Koreans used the term of postwar also in the same way as Japan, and their concept of postwar overlaps with the concept of prewar or postwar used in Japan, and accordingly, side effects are produced that fail to grasp properly the independent characteristics and significance of the Korean War. In conclusion, the Korean War brought about contrasting effects on the history of Korean and Japanese literature. While the Korean War meant a start after the war in Korean literature, it became a turning point marking the end of postwar in Japanese literature. Such different perceptions on postwar also have major implications in that perceptions represent postwar discourses in today's Korea and Japan.

  • In this paper, we propose a method for the random selection of pooling operations for the regularization and reduction of cross validation in convolutional neural networks. The pooling operation in convolutional neural networks is used to reduce the size of the feature map and for its shift invariant properties. In the existing pooling method, one pooling operation is applied in each pooling layer. Because this method fixes the convolution network, the network suffers from overfitting, which means that it excessively fits the models to the training samples. In addition, to find the best combination of pooling operations to maximize the performance, cross validation must be performed. To solve these problems, we introduce the probability concept into the pooling layers. The proposed method does not select one pooling operation in each pooling layer. Instead, we randomly select one pooling operation among multiple pooling operations in each pooling region during training, and for testing purposes, we use probabilistic weighting to produce the expected output. The proposed method can be seen as a technique in which many networks are approximately averaged using a different pooling operation in each pooling region. Therefore, this method avoids the overfitting problem, as well as reducing the amount of cross validation. The experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve better generalization performance and reduce the need for cross validation.

  • In this paper, to overcome disadvantages of existing lining boards, the parametric studies to evaluate safety and verify performance of newly suggested lining boards was performed. Since the calculated stresses of steel plates are lower than the allowable stress for considered all analytical variables, end reinforcement locations, and crane rail loads, it can be concluded that the suggested lining board is structurally safe. Where, "$3,000{\times}2,000{\times}6t$" was select to be optimized cross-section and the reinforcement from the end to 200mm to the internal direction looks like the best case. In addition, the suggested lining board is economical since the steel amount per unit area compared to existing lining board is reduced by 36% and it can apply to the lining structural system of subway and underpass since construction speed is past due to the less installation number of lining boards.

  • A refined two-dimensional analysis method, taking into account the crack opening deformation, is proposed for the evaluation of stress distributions in transverse cracked cross-ply laminates. The interlaminar stresses which play an important role in laminate failure are evaluated using the concept of interface layer. A series expansion of the displacements is employed and the thermal residual stresses and Poisson's effects in the laminated are taken into consideration in the formulation. The stress distributions are compared with finite element results. The proposed method represents well the characteristics of the stress distributions. The through-the-thickness variation of the stress distribution is remarkable near the transverse crack due to the crack opening deformation. The interlaminar stresses have significant values at the transverse crack tip and the proposed analysis can be applied as a basis for the prediction of the induced delamination onset by using appropriate failure criteria.

  • Even though the sprinkler system is a essential fire suppression system, the design engineers do not fully understand the concept of design area which sprinklers operate. They frequently made a mistake to form design area and calculate it. The shape of design area is a square or a rectangle which branch side line is a little longer than the cross main side. NFPA demands to lengthen the branch side to 1.2 times than the cross main side and FM demands 1.4 times. The longer the branch side at the same design area is, the bigger the water quantity and pressure is. At the results of hydraulic calculation of design areas, when the branch side is longer 1.2 times, the water quantity became 4.6% bigger than exact square and the pressure came to 4.67% bigger. When it is longer 1.4 times, the water quantity and the pressure are bigger 7.52%, 14.51%. Therefore, the sprinkler design engineers should follow the general rule of design area, exact square or rectangle which length along the branch line is a little longer than length along the cross main, to design more stable system.
