Recently, the railroad route plan is trying to minimize the damage of the local resident which is caused by railroad construction. For this reason, reducing the banking height of soil roadbed, lowering the bridge girder height of a solid intersection and a part of cross river, the through bridge type which can achieve a required span length must apply. The representative through bridges of railroad are arch bridges, truss bridges and plate girder bridges, the through plate girder bridge of variable section can apply that the span length of these bridges is about $30{\sim}50m$, namely, middle span length bridge types, and that can satisfy structural capacity and beauty of railroad at the same time. This paper introduces plan and design process of the Su-eo cheon bridge applied by a through plate girder bridge type of the Jinju-Gwangyang double track 6th construction ordered at Korea Rail network Authority in 2005.

Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes of trunk and lower extremity muscle activity according to the compensation of arm during bridge movement of healthy subject. Design: Cross-sectional Study. Methods: Twenty healthy subjects participated in this study. The subjects performed bridge exercise with 3 different arm positions(arm abduction 45°, 90° and cross-arms) and measured the muscle activity of the trunk and lower extrimity. During bridge exercise with 3 different arm positions, trunk (rectus abdominis, erector spinae) and lower extrimity muscle activity (gluteus medius, biceps femoris, tibialis anterior) were measured using wireless surface EMG. Results: Rectus abdominis and gluteus medius muscle were most activated during bridge exercise with arm abduction 90° and erector spinae and biceps femoris muscle were most activated during bridge exercise with arm abduction 45°. In addition, tibialis anterior muscle was most activated during bridge exercise with arm cross. However, these difference in muscle activity according to the arm position was not statistically significant. Conclusion: As a result of this study, we think that the change in arm position does not induce sufficient instability to increase the muscle activity of the trunk and lower extremity muscles. Therefore, various approaches for inducing instability of the support surface for increasing muscle activity when applying bridge movement in clinical practice should be explored.
Using cross-ties to connect cables together when forming a cable network is regarded as an efficient method of mitigating cable vibrations. Cross-ties have been extended and fixed on bridge decks or towers in some engineering applications. However, the dynamics of this kind of system need to be further studied, and the effects of extending cross-links to bridge decks/towers on the modal response of the system should be assessed in detail. In this paper, a system of two cables connected by an inter-supported cross-link with another lower cross-link extended to the ground is proposed and analyzed. The characteristic equation of the system is derived, and some limiting solutions in closed form of the system are derived. Roots of cable system with special configurations are also discussed, attention being given to the case when the two cables are identical. A predictable mode behavior was found when the stiffness of inter-connection cross-link and the cross-link extended to the ground were the same. The vector of mode energy distribution and the degree of mode localization index are proposed so as to distinguish global and local modes. The change of mode behaviors is further discussed in the case when the two cables are not identical. Effects of cross-link stiffness, cross-link location, mass-tension ratio, cable length ratio and frequency ratio on $1^{st}$ mode frequency and mode shape are addressed.
Many of the bridge systems, including the girders and cross-beams, and concrete decks behave as the special othotropic plates. A method of calculating the natural frequency corresponding to the first mode of vibration of beam and tower structures with irregular cross-sections was developed and reported by D. H. Kim in 1974. Since 1989, The author has extended this method to Vibration analysis of two dimensional problems including composite laminates, and has reported at several conferenes. Frequently, the bridge floor panels are supported by girders and cross beams. Such panels as well as some of the building floor panels can be assumed as simple supported special orthotropic plates. In this paper, the result of application of simple method of vibration analysis developed by D. H. Kim, to the simply supported sandwich panels with point Mass/Masses is presented.

In this study, an algorithm which can be applied to the optimum design of simple steel plate girders was developed, and efficient optimization strategies for the solution of algorithm were found out. The optimum design algorithm consists of 3-levels of optimization. In the first and second levels of optimization, the absolute maximum bending moment and shearing force are extracted and in the third level of optimization, the optimum cross section of steel plate girder is determined. For the optimum design of cross section, the objective function is formulated as the total area of cross section and constraints are derived in consideration of the various stresses and the minimum dimension of flange and web based on the part of steel bridge in the Korea standard code of road bridge. Sequential unconstrained minimization technique using the exterior penalty function method(SUMT-EP), sequential linear programming(SLP) and sequential quadratic programming (SQP) are proved to be efficient and robust strategies for the optimum design of simple plate girder cross section. From the reliable point of view, SLP is the most efficient and robust strategy and SQP is the most efficient one from the viewpoint of converguency and computing time.
Analytical methods for assessment of the out-of-plane buckling of unbraced top chords of truss bridges may look obsolete while comparing them to finite element analysis. However they are, usually, superior when rapid assessment is necessary. Analytical methods consider the top chord as a bar on elastic supports provided by bracing (Holt, Timoshenko). Correct assessment of the support elasticity (stiffness) is crucial. In the case of truss bridge spans of traditional structural layout (cross-beams at the truss chord nodes only), the elasticity may be set based on the analysis of the, so called, U-frame stiffness. Here the analyses consider the U-frame itself (a pair of verticals and a cross-beam) or the U-frame with adjacent diagonals or the pair of diagonals (in the absence of verticals) and the members of the bottom chord in the adjacent panels. For all the cases, the stability analysis of the chord as a bar in compression is necessary. Unfortunately, the method cannot be applied to contemporary truss bridges without verticals, that usually have independent cross-beam decks (the cross-beams attached to truss chords at their nodes and between them). This is the motivation for the analysis resulting in the method of setting the stiffness of the equivalent U-frame for the aforementioned truss bridges. Truss girders of both, gussetless and gusseted, joints are taken into account.
The present study fundamentally investigated the mechanical performance of the rib-stiffened super-wide bridge deck with twin box girders in concrete, which is a very popular application to efficiently widen the bridges with normal span. The shear lag effects of the specific cross-sections were firstly studied. The spatial stress distribution and local stiffness of the bridge deck with twin box girders were then investigated under several typical wheel load conditions. Meanwhile, a comparative study for the bridge deck with and without stiffening ribs was also carried out during the investigation; thereby, a design optimization for the stiffening ribs was further suggested. Finally, aiming at the preliminary design, an approximate methodology to manually calculate the bending moments of the rib-stiffened bridge deck was analytically proposed for engineers to quickly assess its performance. This rib-stiffened bridge deck with twin box girders can be widely applied for concrete (especially concrete cable-stayed) bridges with normal span, however, requiring a super-wide bridge width due to the traffic flow.
Accurately extracting the axle distribution information of a passing vehicle from bridge dynamic responses experiences a key and challenging step in non-pavement bridge weigh-in-motion (BWIM). In this article, the wavelet transformation is adopted and the wavelet coefficient curve is used as a substitute for dynamic response. The driving frequency is introduced and expanded to multi-axle vehicle, and the wavelet coefficient curve on specific scale corresponding to the driving frequency is confirmed to contain obvious axle information. On this basis, an automatic method for axle distribution information identification is proposed. The specific wavelet scale can be obtained through iterative computing, and the false peaks due to bridge vibration can be eliminated through cross-correlation analysis of the wavelet coefficients of two measure points. The integrand function that corresponds to the maximum value of the cross-correlation function is used to identify the peaks caused by axles. A numerical application of the proposed axle information identification method is carried out. Numerical results demonstrate that this method acquires precise axle information from the responses of an axle-insensitive structure (e.g., girder) and decreases the requirement of sensitivity structure of BWIM. Finally, an experimental study on a full-scale simply supported bridge is also conducted to verify the effectiveness of this method.
The flutter instability is one of the most important themes need to be carefully investigated in the design of long-span bridges. This study takes the central-slotted ideal thin flat plate as an object, and examines the characteristics of unsteady surface pressures of stationary and vibrating cross sections based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The flutter derivatives are extracted from the surface pressure distribution and the critical flutter wind speed of a long span suspension bridge is then calculated. The influences of angle of attack and the slot ratio on the flutter performance of central-slotted plate are investigated. The results show that the critical flutter wind speed reduces with increase in angle of attack. At lower angles of attack where the plate shows the characteristics of a streamlined cross-section, the existence of central slot can improve the critical flutter wind speed. On the other hand, at larger angles of attack, where the plate becomes a bluff body, the existence of central slot further reduces the flutter performance.

Recently, the bridges become greater according to development of a construction technology. This phenomenon requires long span bridge, so that increases the dead weight. The orthotropic steel deck bridges have much advantages such as the light dead weight and the reduction of construction period. And almost whole process of carried out is manufactured at factory, so it can cause the increase of quality authoritativeness. But orthotropic steel deck bridge is consist of structure by welding, it can not avoid a lot of welding jobs, defects and transformation by welding are becoming problem accordingly. Specially, topical stress concentration phenomenon in cross connection area of longitudinal and transverse rib causes fatigue failure. The Bulkhead Plate for prevention of this stress concentration phenomenon was applied by changing the orthotropic steel deck of Williamsburg bridge in USA. But, it is principle that a Bulkhead Plate is not established in the domestic design standard. Therefore, it is estimated that the study for installation of Bulkhead Plate is needed. This treatise with considering these circumstances proves efficiency of Bulkhead Plate and will be presented optimal design details through finite element analysis according to change the geometrical of Bulkhead Plate and tile cross-connection area of longitudinal and transverse rib.
