Estimation of Sweet Pepper Crop Fresh Weight with Convolutional Neural Network (합성곱 신경망을 이용한 온실 파프리카의 작물 생체중 추정)

  • Various studies have been attempted to estimate and measure the fresh weight of crops. However, no studies have used raw images of sweet peppers to estimate fresh weight. Recently, image processing research using convolution neural network (CNN) that can use raw data is increasing. In this study, the crop fresh weight was estimated by using the images of sweet peppers as inputs of CNN. The experiment was performed in a greenhouse growing sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.). The fresh weight, the output of the CNN, was regressed based on the data collected through destructive investigation. The highest coefficient of determination (R2) of the trained CNN was 0.95. The estimated fresh weight showed a very similar trend to the actual measured value.

  • This experiment was carried out to determine the adequate amount of nitrogen for densely and lately seeded soybean, and the results obtained are as follows, 1) Various fertilization amounts of nitrogen did not effect the date of emergency, but the flowering and the maturing dates were delayed at the plots fertilized the nitrogen heavily. 2) In accordance with an increasing amount of nitrogen fertilization, the length of the stem and the internode was significantly elongated but the stem diameter was thinned down, and the latter was suggested to be the cause of lodging. 3) The 1, 000 grain weight and the number of pods per hill were decreased according to the increasing the amount of nitrogen fertilization. 4) A highly significant difference in grain yield was recognized between varieties but among treatments. However, in case of the extremly late cultivation, the grain yield of the early maturing variety (Choongbukbaeg) was increased at the plot of 6 kg nitrogen.

System Networking for the Monitoring and Analysis of Local Climatic Information in Alpine Area (강원고랭지 농업기상 감시 및 분석시스템 구축)

  • In order to monitor local climatic information, twelve automated weather stations (AWS) were installed in alpine area by the Alpine Agricultural Experiment Station, Rural Development Administration (RDA), at the field of major crop located in around highland area, and collected data from 1993 to 2000. Hourly measurements of air and soil temperature (underground 10 cm,20 cm), relative humidity, wind speed and direction, precipitation, solar radiation and leaf wetness were automatically performed and the data could be collected through a public phone line. Datalogger was selected as CR10X (Campbell scientific, LTD, USA) out of consideration for sensers' compatibility, economics, endurance and conveniences. All AWS in alpine area were combined for net work and daily climatic data were analyzed in text and graphic file by program (Chumsungdae, LTD) on 1 km $\times$ 1 km grid tell basis. In this analysis system, important multi-functionalities, monitoring and analysis of local climatic information in alpine area was emphasized. The first objective was to obtain the output of a real time data from AWS. Secondly, daily climatic normals for each grid tell were calculated from geo-statistical relationships based on the climatic records of existing weather stations as well as their topographical informations. On 1 km $\times$ 1 km grid cell basis, real time climatic data from the automated weather stations and daily climatic normals were analyzed and graphed. In the future, if several simulation models were developed and connected with this system it would be possible to precisely forecast crop growth and yield or plant disease and pest by using climatic information in alpine area.

Determination of the Optimum Tillers in Different Rice Cultivars for High Yield (다수확을 위한 벼품종군별 적정 분벽경수의 결정)

  • A greenhouse experiment was conducted to determine the number of optimum. tillers within a plant for high yield and to clarify the morpho-anatomical characteristics of cultivars having different tillering abilities. Optimum tillers, i.e tillers which produced heavy panicles were found to be around five to nine tillers per plant, although wider range may be possible if more cultivars were tested or under different growth conditions. Optimum tillers emerged within a short time after transplanting as compared with the other tillers. They exhibited longer tiller duration, produced more spikelets and had better filled spikelets, more vascular bundles and were taller with larger leaf area. However, the 1, 000 grain weight and fertility varied with cultivars and showed no general trend. Of this morpho-anatomical features, the total number of spike lets per plant was considered as the potential criterion for determining the optimum tiller number.

  • An experiment with alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) plants was designed to investigate the changes in non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) contents and the activities of amylolytic enzymes during a regrowth period following defoliation. Sampling from hydroponic grown-plants were carried out at intervals during 24 days of regrowth. Shoot regrowth was very slow during the first 10 days and root growth was depressed after defoliation. Defoliation induced a great decrease in both total sugar and starch contents in taproots during the first 10∼14 days. A major recovery of NSC occurred from day 15. Averaged over sampling dates, the activity of exo-amylase was about 400-fold higher than that of endo-amylase. Exo-amylase activity in defoliate plants slightly increased until day 6 (maximum level) and then decreased. Endo-amylase rapidly increased for the first 4 days after defoliation and slightly increased afterwards to a maximum on day 24. These results showed that increase in amylolytic enzyme activity in taproots coincided with the time of starch utilization during regrowth and that indicated it plays an important role in starch degradation.

Response of Soybean to Elevated $\textrm{CO}_2$ Concentrations and Temperatures at Two Levels of Nitrogen Application

  • Effects of ambient and elevated $\textrm{CO}_2$ and high temperature, and their interactions with zero and applied nitrogen supply (NN-no nitrogen and AN-applied nitrogen) were studied on soybean (Glycine max L.) in 2001. In this experiment, elevated $\textrm{CO}_2$ (650 $\mu\textrm{mol}.\textrm{mol}^{-1}$) and temperature (+$5^{\circ}$) increased total dry mass at final harvest by 125% and 119% and seed weight per plant by 57% and 105% for NN and AN plants, respectively. Although the influence of temperature and temperature x $\textrm{CO}_2$ were not significant, the influences of $\textrm{CO}_2$ concentration and temperature x $\textrm{CO}_2$ concentration were significant on total dry weight and seed weight, respectively. In particular, seed weight per plant was increased, while weight per one hundred seed weight was decreased with elevated $\textrm{CO}_2$ and temperature. The N supply increased biomass and seed weight per soybean plants. The results of this study suggest that the long-term adaptation of soybean growth at an elevated $\textrm{CO}_2$ concentration and high temperature might potentially result in a increase in dry matter production and yield.

Soil Properties and Plant Yield in the Cultivation Area of Ostericum Koreanum Kit. (강활 재배지의 토양 특성과 수량)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the cultivated soil properties, the growth and yield of Ostericum koreanum Kit. in the Bonghwa area. The results were as follows: In Bonghwa area, soil texture of upland soil were mostly sandy loam and loam. Sloped areas of $7\sim15%$ were plentiful than the other slopes, that of next was $15\sim30%$ slope. Sandy loam and loam soil were mostly 'well' in the drainage class, but loamy coarse sand and loamy sand soil were 'excessively well' drainage class. In the 'moderately well' drainage class, yield of Ostericum koreanum was 289kg/10a, and that of 'poorly' drainage class was low. The yield of loam soil texture was 284kg/10a. Soil organic matter, Potassium and EC were lower in 'poorly' drainage, but the other constituents were not definite tendency by different drainage classes.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the changes of sugar contents and chip color during 104days storage after harvesting of five potato varieties. The potato varieties were planted on 1st April in 1999 and harvested on 10. July in 1999. $No_2$ contents in potato petiole tended to decrease repidly at tuber maturing stage. $K^+$ contents in potato petiole tended to in crease at 70 days ofter planting on medium maturing varieties, and at 90 days after planting on late maturing variety. Snowden variety was no desirable cultivar for processing on spring cultivation due to long growth period. Contents of solid and sugar in potatoes affected on potato chip color. Higher contents of solid in potato varieties showed low sugar contents and no change on chip color during storage.

  • 1. The experiment was carried out to control the unfilled fruits in peanut with lime and potassium application. 2. There was increased tendency in branch length and numbers in accordance with the increased amount of lime and potassium, but the decreased tendency was found at over applied conditions of them. 3. Fresh weight of vegetative part was increased along with the increased amount of lime application by 100kg/10a. 4. Increased lime and potassium within the certain amount decreased the ratio of unfilled fruits. These fact raised were considered due to not only the increased number of two filled shell but the decreased number of one filled or unfilled shell. 5. Seed weight was influenced by both lime and potassium but lime seemed to have more effectiveness. Interaction between lime and potassium on seed weight was highly significant. 6. For the control of unfilled shell and obtain higher yield, it desirable to apply 15kg/10a of potassium and 100kg/10a of lime with optimum amount of nitrogen and phosphorous.

  • In order to clarify the effect of underchannel drainage and culture on the ill-drainage paddy fields, the experiment was carried out at different amounts of fertilizer and planting space under the culvert. It had been found that the effect of underchannel drainage on the ill-drainage paddy field was very efficacious, and planting density was more effective on yield than the amount of fertilizer applied.
