  • The purpose of this essay explores a critical review of the critical communication studies and Journalism focused on the neoliberalism in Korea. The majority of social member in Korea does not know the concept of neoliberalism, and just recognize it as a 'global standard.' This essay is analyzing Korean journalism which causes this phenomenon primarily. Nonetheless, the critical communication studies was negligent in criticism on journalism. Any research paper in was not analyzed the connection between neoliberalism and journalism At last this essay proposed that the critical communication studies should establish their identity themselves to critically analyze the journalism trying to protect the neoliberalism in one way, and become more critical to the press itself to raise the relationship with journalism spot.

  • Wegener's granulomatosis is a systemic vasculitis of the medium and small arteries, as well as of the venules, arterioles, and occasionally large arteries, and primarily involves the upper and lower respiratory tracts and the kidneys. Renal symptoms of Wegener's granulomatosis are indistinguishable from those of vasculitis such as Henoch-$Sch\ddot{o}nlein$ purpura and microscopic polyangiitis. This case, though initially diagnosed as Henoch-$Sch\ddot{o}nlein$ purpura, was confirmed as Wegener's granulomatosis from a lung biopsy fifteen years after the initial diagnosis. We report this case with a review of the literature.

  • Pulmonary mucormycosis is an uncommon, serious opportunistic infection caused by fungi belonging to the order Mucorales and it occurs exclusively in debilitated or immuno-compromised hosts. It is known that the fungi can invade the blood vessels and cause serious ischemic necrosis and bleeding5. We experienced a fatal case of pulmonary mucormycosis in a diabetic 75-year-old man who developed a progressive necrotizing lesion despite administering proper and prompt medical and surgical treatment. We report here on this case along with a review of the relevant medical literature.

  • Infliximab, a TNF-${\alpha}$ antagonist, has been used to treat refractory rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, Crohn's disease and Behcet's disease. Tuberculosis (TB) is a well-known opportunistic infection in patients receiving infliximab. Therefore, patients should be screened and treated for latent or active TB infection before being administered infliximab. Recently, we encountered a case of military TB during infliximab therapy in a patient suffering from Behcet's disease and uveitis. We report this case with a review of the relevant literature.

  • Varicella, more commonly known as chickenpox, is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It is a common benign childhood illness. In adults, Varicella is uncommon but is more severely associated with complications including pneumonia, hepatitis, disseminated intravascular coagulation, encephalitis and myocarditis. A serious and life-threatening complication is the development of varicella-zoster virus pneumonia (VZVP). Although VZVP is well described in immunocompromised hosts, it is rarely seen in immunocompetent adults. The VZVP in healthy adults is more prevalent in cigarette smokers and during pregnancy. However, reports of VZVP in healthy adults are scarce in Korea. The authors report here a case of VZVP in an immunocompetent adult and present a literature review.

  • It is well recognized that case management is required to survive in the rapidly changing medical environment. One of the case management is the critical pathway(CP) which is assumed to increase the quality of care and at the same time to decrease the length of stay in hospital. The purpose of the study was to develop a CP for the management of patients with postero-lateral fusion for lumbar spinal stenosis. Through review of literature and medical records of patients with spinal stenosis, a pilot CP was designed, including 8 different care components such as medication, laboratory tests, assessment etc., from one day before surgery to 6 days of postoperative care. Every item of the pilot CP was evaluated by a panel of experts to test the content validity. The items not agreed on by more than 4 out of 6 experts were deleted or modified to be integrated in the CP. To apply the modified CP to a clinical environment, the items reflecting treatment, medication and lab work were entered into an order communication system(OCS), and doctors and nurses were taught to use the CP. Finally, the development of CP for the patients with posterolateral lumbar fusion was completed after the application and variance analysis of the CP.

  • Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng) and American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L.) are the two most recognized ginseng botanicals. It is believed that the ginseng saponins called ginsenosides are the major active constituents in both ginsengs. Although American ginseng is not as extensively studied as Asian ginseng, it is one of the best selling herbs in the US, and has garnered increasing attention from scientists in recent years. In this article, after a brief introduction of the distribution and cultivation of American ginseng, we discuss chemical analysis of saponins from these two ginsengs, i.e., their similarities and differences. Subsequently, we review pharmacological effects of the saponins, including the effects on the cardiovascular system, immune system, and central nervous system as well as the anti-diabetes and anti-cancer effects. These investigations were mainly derived from American ginseng studies. We also discuss evidence suggesting that chemical modifications of ginseng saponins would be a valuable approach to develop novel compounds in drug discovery.

  • Critical infrastructure resilience has been integrated in critical infrastructure protection in US after Department of Homeland Security recognized that protection, in isolation, is a brittle strategy. Here "resilience" is the system's ability to efficiently reduce both the magnitude and the duration of systemic impacts after hazards, and quantitatively assessed as a resilience cost. The resilience cost is the sum of systemic impacts and recovery efforts, and many case studies on resilience costs show that the recovery effort should be included in resilience assessment. This paper explains how the resilience cost is defined and quantified with a case study.

  • This Study reviewed 86 research articles using inferential statistics published in 2001-2004 in 4 korean core journals in the field of library and information science. Sampling methods, response rates and nonresponse bias, reliability test, and inferential statistic techniques used in the articles were critically reviewed and analyzed. Nonprobability sampling was mostly used. Average response rate was 74.47%. Parametric statistics were mostly used. Some misunderstandings in using each inferential statistics, especially Reliability Test, Multiple Regression, Factor Analysis, MDS, etc. were reported in this study.
