Effects of Operation Parameters on Critical Flux During Submerged-Type Membrane Filtration System (침지형 분리막 여과공정에서 운전조건에 따른 임계플럭스에 대한 연구)

  • A bench-scale submerged-type membrane filtration system (SMFS) was constructed to study a feasibility of membrane filtration for solid-liquid separation in water and wastewater treatment processes. In the case of applying the SMFS to a biological wastewater treatment process, so-called membrane bioreactor, aeration underneath membrane modules is usually employed in order to provide oxygen demand for microbial growth as well as to control membrane fouling. A study was investigated the effects of operation parameters by aeration intensity, feed concentration, foulant type and airlift pore size on critical flux. Critical flux tends to increase with aeration rate. Optimal aeration flow rate was found to be 10 L/min/module. Feed concentration and foulant type has a significant effect on membrane fouling and filtration performance. But downward position and pore size of airlift has no a significant effects on membrane fouling and filtration performance.

Fracture Characteristics of Concrete at Early Ages

  • The objective of this study is to examine fracture characteristics of concrete at early ages, i.g. critical stress intensity factor, critical crack-tip opening displacement, fracture energy, and bilinear softening curve based on the concepts of effective-elastic crack model and cohesive crack model. A wedge splitting test for Mode I was performed on cubic wedge specimens with a notch at the edge. By experimenting with various strengths and ages, load-crack mouth opening curves were obtained, and the results were analyzed by linear elastic fracture mechanics and FEM(finite element method). The results from the test and analysis showed that critical stress intensity factor and facture energy increased while critical crack-tip opening displacement decreased with concrete aging from 1 day to 28 days. Four parameters of bilinear softening curve from 1 day to 28 days were obtained from a numerical analysis. The obtained fracture parameters and bilinear softening curves at early ages from this study are to be used as a fracture criterion and an input data for the finite element analysis of concrete at early ages.

  • The dense granular flow spallation target is a new target concept proposed for an Accelerator-Driven Sub-critical (ADS) system. In this paper, the beam-target configurations of a tungsten granular flow target for the ADS with a thermal power of 1 GW is explored. The beam profile options using different scanning methods are discussed. The critical geometry parameters are adjusted to investigate the performance of the granular target from the aspects of neutron efficiency, stability and temperature distribution in target medium. To figure out how the target under accident conditions would behave, different clogging conditions are induced in the simulation. The dynamic processes are analyzed and some important parameters such as abnormal temperature rise and beam cutoff time window are obtained. The response of the sub-critical reactor to a clogging accident is also investigated. It is indicated that the monitoring of the granular flow by the neutron detectors in the sub-critical core will be effective.

Probabilistic analysis of micro-film buckling with parametric uncertainty

  • The intentional buckling design of micro-films has various potential applications in engineering. The buckling amplitude and critical strain of micro-films are the crucial parameters for the buckling design. In the reported studies, the film parameters were regarded as deterministic. However, the geometrical and physical parameters uncertainty of micro-films due to manufacturing becomes prominent and needs to be considered. In the present paper, the probabilistic nonlinear buckling analysis of micro-films with uncertain parameters is proposed for design accuracy and reliability. The nonlinear differential equation and its asymptotic solution for the buckling micro-film with nominal parameters are firstly established. The mean values, standard deviations and variation coefficients of the buckling amplitude and critical strain are calculated by using the probability densities of uncertain parameters such as the film span length, thickness, elastic modulus and compressive force, to reveal the effects of the film parameter uncertainty on the buckling deformation. The results obtained illustrate the probabilistic relation between buckling deformation and uncertain parameters, and are useful for accurate and reliable buckling design in terms of probability.

  • The effect of temperature on the critical micelle concentration of dodecylpyridinium chloride has been determined by electrical conductance method over the range from $5^{\circ}C\;to\;50^{\circ}C$. The values of the change in heat content, ${\Delta}H_m$, and the other thermodynamic parameters have been estimated using the equation of temperature dependence on the critical micelle concentration for the same temperature range. The significance of these thermodynamic quantities and their relations to the various current theories of micelle forming processes were discussed.

  • As needs for substitution of excessive road-oriented transport by the railroad increase, we proposed the guideline for development of the high speed freight car up to 150km/h through analyzing the critical speed of welded-type freight car employed and investigating the improvement in its maintenance. This study, the proper design parameters of conical rubber spring was determined to meet the vibration performance.

Model of Least Square Support Vector Machine (LSSVM) for Prediction of Fracture Parameters of Concrete

  • This article employs Least Square Support Vector Machine (LSSVM) for determination of fracture parameters of concrete: critical stress intensity factor ($K_{Ic}^s$) and the critical crack tip opening displacement ($CTOD_c$). LSSVM that is firmly based on the theory of statistical learning theory uses regression technique. The results are compared with a widely used Artificial Neural Network (ANN) Models of LSSVM have been developed for prediction of $K_{Ic}^s$ and $CTOD_c$, and then a sensitivity analysis has been performed to investigate the importance of the input parameters. Equations have been also developed for determination of $K_{Ic}^s$ and $CTOD_c$. The developed LSSVM also gives error bar. The results show that the developed model of LSSVM is very predictable in order to determine fracture parameters of concrete.

  • For critical structures and application, where a given reliability must be met, it is necessary to account for uncertainties and variability in material properties, structural parameters affecting the corrosion process, in addition to the statistical and decision uncertainties. This paper presents an approach to the fuzzy arithmetic based modeling of the chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcement in concrete structures that takes into account the uncertainties in the physical models of chloride penetration into concrete and corrosion of steel reinforcement, as well as the uncertainties in the governing parameters, including concrete diffusivity, concrete cover depth, surface chloride concentration and critical chloride level for corrosion initiation. The parameters of the models are regarded as fuzzy numbers with proper membership function adapted to statistical data of the governing parameters and the fuzziness of the corrosion time is determined by the fuzzy arithmetic of interval arithmetic and extension principle

Influential Parameters on Offshore Jacket Structure Launching (해양 자켓구조물 진수 영향인자에 대한 고찰)

  • The launching process is one of the most critical operations for large structure in offshore installation. Since as the size increases it limits the availability of offshore crane facilities, the large jacket structures are often installed by launching. As the structure approaches to tilt beam, it reaches critical load, and there are parameters to affect on launching procedure. The major influential parameters are trim, draft of barge, center of gravity, center of buoyancy and reserved buoyancy of jacket. As increasing of trim and draft, structural loads tend to decrease. The trim is found to be more contributing than draft on structural loads. Therefore the trim should be increased so as to decrease structural loads and to avoid stalling of structure and submergence of stern. During the launching process, the distance between jacket and seabed should be investigated which differs from the amount of reserved buoyancy and launching condition of barge. In this paper the effects of parameters on launching process are numerically investigated.

  • This study conducted a series of drained triaxial test in order to determine the critical state parameters of a high compressible Jeju sand. Jeju sand is classified into mixed sand containing both siliceous and calcareous materials and has high extreme void ratios due to the angularity of grains and the intra-particle voids of hollow particles. It is observed that the behavior of Jeju sand is similar to that of general calcareous sand. The friction angle of Jeju sand at critical state gradually decreases with increasing the mean effective stress. Test result shows that the particle crushing resulted from stress during shear causes the reduction of void ratio at critical state.
