The failure of composite sandwich joints was experimentally investigated. A total of 30 joint specimens of 5 different types were tested with various fastening methods and core materials. In the NomexTM core sandwich joints, the core shear buckling was commonly observed in all the specimens which was followed by the slope change of the load-displacement curve. After the shear buckling, however, the joints carried additional loads of 50~200% over the buckling loads and then finally failed in the upper face breakage. The joints of PMI foam core showed the shear failure of the core instead of shear buckling and experienced the sharp drop of the carried load. Considering the failure modes, while both the core and face properties are important in the $Nomex^{TM}$ core joints, core shear strength seems to be the critical factor for the foam core joints.

This paper presents a quasi-static optimization technique for elastic structures under dynamic loads. An equivalent static load (ESL) set is defined as a static load set which generates the same displacement field as that from a dynamic load at a certain time. Multiple ESL sets calculated at every time step are employed to represent the various states of the structure under the dynamic load. They can cover every critical state that might happen at an arbitrary time. Continuous characteristics of dynamic load are simulated by multiple discontinuous ones of static loads. The calculated sets of ESLs are applied as a multiple loading condition in the optimization process. A design cycle is defined as a circulated process between an analysis domain and a design domain. Design cycles are repeated until a design converges. The analysis domain gives a loading condition necessary for the design domain. The design domain gives a new updated design to be verified by the analysis domain in the next design cycle. This iterative process is quite similar to that of the multidisciplinary optimization technique. Even though the global convergence cannot be guaranteed, the proposed technique makes it possible to optimize the structures under dynamic loads. It has also applicability, flexibility, and reliability.
This study investigates the structural performance of 3D steel pipe rack suspended scaffolding systems. For the purpose, a standard full scale 3D steel pipe rack suspended scaffolding system considering two frames, two plane trusses, purlins and wooden floor is constructed in the laboratory. A developed load transmission system was placed in these experimental systems to distribute single loads to the center of a specific area in a step-by-step manner using a load jack. After each load increment, the displacements are measured by means of linear variable differential transducers placed in several critical points of the system. The tests are repeated for five different system conditions to determine the structural performance. The means of system conditions is the numbers of the tie bars which are used to connect plane trusses under level. Finite elements models of the 3D steel pipe rack suspended scaffolding systems considering different systems conditions are constituted using SAP2000 software to support the experimental tests and to use the models in future studies. Each of models including load transmission platform is analyzed under a single loading and the displacements are obtained. In addition, to calibrate the numerical models some uncertain parameters such as elasticity modulus of wooden floor and connection rigidity of purlins to plane trusses are assessed experimentally. The results of this work demonstrate that when increasing numbers of tie bars the displacement values are decreased. Also the results obtained from developed numerical models have harmony with those of experimental. In addition, the scaffolding system with two tie bars at the beginning and at the end of the plane truss has the optimum structural performance compared the results obtained for other scaffolding system conditions.
Base-isolation is now being adopted as a retrofitting strategy to improve seismic behaviour of reinforced concrete (r.c.) framed structures subjected to far-fault earthquakes. However, the increase in deformability of a base-isolated framed building may lead to amplification in the structural response under the long-duration horizontal pulses of high-magnitude near-fault earthquakes, which can become critical once the strength level of a fire-weakened r.c. superstructure is reduced. The aim of the present work is to investigate the nonlinear seismic response of fire-damaged r.c. framed structures retrofitted by base-isolation. For this purpose, a five-storey r.c. framed building primarily designed (as fixed-base) in compliance with a former Italian seismic code for a medium-risk zone, is to be retrofitted by the insertion of elastomeric bearings to meet the requirements of the current Italian code in a high-risk seismic zone. The nonlinear seismic response of the original (fixed-base) and retrofitted (base-isolated) test structures in a no fire situation are compared with those in the event of fire in the superstructure, where parametric temperature-time curves are defined at the first level, the first two and the upper levels. A lumped plasticity model describes the inelastic behaviour of the fire-damaged r.c. frame members, while a nonlinear force-displacement law is adopted for the elastomeric bearings. The average root-mean-square deviation of the observed spectrum from the target design spectrum together with a suitable intensity measure are chosen to select and scale near- and far-fault earthquakes on the basis of the design hypotheses adopted.

A new earth pressure equation acting on the vertical shafts in cohesionless soils has been proposed by modifying the equations proposed by others. In order to verify the modified equation, model tests which can control uniform wall displacement with depth to radial direction were conducted. Model tests were performed with three different wall friction angles and two different relative densities. The measured values were larger than estimated values when assuming $\lambda=1$ ; smaller than those when assuming $\lambda=1-sin\phi$. The parameter, $\lambda$ is the ratio of tangential stress to vertical stress and is the most critical value in proposed equation. A method which can estimate the earth pressure on vertical shafts in layered soils is also proposed by reasonably assuming the failure surface of layered soils and using the modified equation. In order to verify the proposed method, in-situ measurement data have been collected from the three in-situ vertical shafts installed in layered soils. Most of earth pressures converted from measured data match reasonably well with estimated values using proposed method.
Recently, some researchers have been carried out risk assessment of vehicles exhaust on human health. Especially, some of VOCs which is non-controlled, was classified to hazardous pollutant, such as 1,3-Butadiene and BTEX(Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylene). Therefore, the profile on non-controlled pollutant may be needed in the future, because it would be critical data or information to control them. Additionally, with increasing amount of motorcycle, the source profiling is essential for estimating emission factor and amount on motorcycle exhaust. For these, in this study, imported motorcycles (8 vehicles) were selected as a test model while considering the increasing ratio on sales volume between 2013 and 2014; it was also compared with domestic motorcycles on those. The experiment was conducted by driving mode, UDC and ECE+EUDC that made from EURO III. In addition, it was performed at cold start driving mode without effect by displacement, for evaluating only correlation of BTEX with HC. In order to apply the ratio (m,p-Xylene/o-Xylene) as a marker, the ratio was compared with those of tunnel, road side and residential area. As a result, it showed best correlation ($R^2=0.98$) among those. In the future, it has to be considered as a marker for effect evaluation to atmospheric environment by exhaust emission.

An experiment was carried out to evaluate the lateral torsional stability of a girder with respect to the location and magnitude of prestressing force. The test of evaluating the lateral displacement and stability of a girder could cause an unexpected result due to various parameters, such as material nonlinearity, initial geometric imperfections, prestressing force, and loading and support conditions. Therefore, a small model testing was programmed to control the various parameters and assess the lateral torsional stability with respect to the prestressing force. This study proposed and fabricated an experimental apparatus that can satisfy the loading and in-plane and out-of-plane support conditions and also contol the prestressing force. The result of the experiment showed that the lateral torsional stability increased when the prestressing force was applied in the bottom flange of the girder. As a result, this study proposed an analytical equation that can account for the effect of the prestressing force in the lateral torsional stability of a girder.
Purpose: To present a flexible and accurate autonomous solution for creating any desired row spacing value between the hydroponic gullies in multilayer growing units, and evaluate the capabilities and performance of the relevant automated system through the use of virtual prototyping technique. Methods: To build the virtual prototype of the system, CAD models of its different parts, including an autonomous vehicle and the mechanical mechanisms embedded in the multilayer growing unit, were developed and imported into the RecurDyn simulation software. In order to implement the automated row spacing operation, three spacing modes with different loading cycles and working steps were defined, and the operation of the system was simulated to obtain the target row spacing values specified for each of these modes. Results: Motion profiles related to the horizontal displacement of: 1) the lower and upper sliding bars installed in the cultivation layers, and 2) the hydroponic gullies, during the simulation of the system operation, were generated and analyzed. No deviation from the specified target spacing values was observed at the end of simulations for all spacing modes. Conclusions: The results of the motion analysis obtained by simulating the system operation confirm the effectiveness of the control scheme proposed for automated row spacing of gullies. It was also found that proper sequencing of the loading cycles and the precision of the working strokes of the upper bars are the critical factors for establishing a certain row spacing value. Based on the simulation results, precise control of the back and forth motions of the upper bars is highly necessary for sound operation of the real system.

A series of Quasi-Elastic Neutron Scattering (QENS) experiments helps us to understand the single-particle (hydrogen atom) dynamics of a globular protein and its hydration water and strong coupling between them. We also performed Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations on a realistic model of the hydrated hen-egg Lysozyme powder having two proteins in the periodic box. We found the existence of a Fragile-to-Strong dynamic Crossover (FSC) phenomenon in hydration water around a protein occurring at TL=$225{\pm}5K$ by analyzing Intermediate Scattering Function (ISF). On lowering of the temperature toward FSC, the structure of hydration water makes a transition from predominantly the High Density Liquid (HDL) form, a more fluid state, to predominantly the Low Density Liquid (LDL) form, a less fluid state, derived from the existence of a liquid?liquid critical point at an elevated pressure. We showed experimentally and confirmed theoretically that this sudden switch in the mobility of the hydration water around a protein triggers the dynamic transition (so-called glass transition) of the protein, at a temperature TD=220 K. Mean Square Displacement (MSD) is the important factor to show that the FSC is the key to the strong coupling between a protein and its hydration water by suggesting TL${\fallingdotseq}$TD. MD simulations with TIP4P force field for water were performed to understand hydration level dependency of the FSC temperature. We added water molecules to increase hydration level of the protein hydration water, from 0.30, 0.45, 0.60 and 1.00 (1.00 is the bulk water). These confirm the existence of the FSC and the hydration level dependence of the FSC temperature: FSC temperature is decreased upon increasing hydration level. We compared the hydration water around Lysozyme, B-DNA and RNA. Similarity among those suggests that the FSC and this coupling be universal for globular proteins, biopolymers.

When using the light-weight form with polystyrene on slab, as a result of reducing the weight of slab, the span was increased or size of supporting member for slab was decreased. But capacity of punching shear resistance on the slab using the polystyrene form with plat plate system was deteriorated at critical section around the column. But standard for estimate of internal force did not exist, and established study was insufficient. This study performed the experiment on the punching shear for understanding punching shear force at the slab-column connection using the slab with polystyrene form. The principal variable was size of column, arrangement of polystyrene form and existence of shear reinforcement, and we planned four specimens. From the test, we analysed the crack, failure mode, road-displacement graph and punching shear strength, and capacity of punching shear resistance for slab using the polystyrene form was understood.
