When REBCO coated conductors (CCs) are applied to superconducting devices such as coils and magnets, they are subjected to deformation in various modes such as compression/tension bending, uniaxial/transverse tension and torsion. Despite outstanding performances by REBCO CC tapes, their electromechanical properties have been evaluated primarily under uniaxial tension, therefore data about the critical current ($I_c$) response in the compressive strain region are lacking. In this study, the characteristic responses of $I_c$ in REBCO CC tapes under bending strains in the range from tensile to compressive were evaluated. The springboard bending beam was used, wherein the CC tape sample was soldered onto the surface of the springboard. A Goldacker-type bending test rig, which lacks a support holding the sample during testing, was used as a comparator. Degradation in $I_c$ behaviors, including strain sensitivity, in differently processed REBCO CC tapes were examined based on the test rig used.
The hazard warning levels are necessary for the rational design and safety construction of underground space, as mountain and urban tunnel. Sakurai provided the hazard warning levels for assessing the stability of tunnels using the critical strain of rock mass, which is defined as a ratio between uni-axial compressive strength and the Young's modulus. The concept of critical strain guidelines is introduced in this study for the assessment of tunnel safety during excavation. Moreover, in this paper, the critical strain properties of sedimentary rock in Korea has investigated and analysed in detail by Lab. test, as the uniaxial compression tests. Finally, critical strain properties of sedimentary rock is discussed the relationship of failure strain values, uniaxial compression strengths and Young's modulus.

This paper focuses on the effect of creep on the critical compressive strain (CCS) of concrete. The strain of concrete corresponding to the peak compressive stress is crucial in the selection of the ultimate yield strength of the reinforcing bar used in reinforced concrete columns. Among the various influencing factors, such as the creep, shrinkage, loading rate and confinement, the effect of creep and shrinkage is the most significant. So far, investigations into how these factors can affect the CCS of concrete have been rare. Therefore, to investigate the effect of creep and shrinkage on CCS, an experimental (part I) and a parametric study (part II) were conducted, as presented in these papers (part I considers creep effect, part II considers effect of creep and shrinkage). In part I, experiments pertaining to the loading age, loading rate, loading duration and loading and creep levels were conducted to study the effect of these variables on the CCS of concrete. It was found that the effects of the loading rate, loading age, and level and duration on the CCS of concrete were negligible. However, it is very important to consider the effect of creep.
The $I_c$ degradation behavior of critical current in differently processed YBCO and SmBCO CC tapes with IBAD template has been investigated. It has been known that the residual strain in the CC tape will influence the shape of the $I_c$-strain window; $I_c$ may show a peak value if there exist a residual strain induced in the tape during manufacturing. The difference of residual strain may be resulted from the adopted different deposition techniques. In this study, bending test of CC tapes has been done using the Goldacker bending test rig which can produce both compressive and tensile bending strain continuously or alternately to the sample. For SmBCO CC tapes, in continuous compressive bending test, $I_c$ showed a minimal increase and did not degrade up to the largest strain that can be applied using the bending rig equivalent to 1.15% based on the sample thickness. However, in the case of alternate application of compressive and tensile bending strain, $I_c$ showed a larger degradation and a lower reversible limit when compared with the case of continuous application of the bending strain. When $I_c$ started to degrade significantly at the tension side, the reversibility ended, also at the compression side which is resulted from the permanent deformation like delamination or cracks that was induced due to tensile bending strain.
Poor strength test results are sometimes not an indication of low concrete quality, but rather inferior testing quality. In a compression test, the strain distribution over the ends of the specimen is a critical factor for the test results. Non-uniform straining of a concrete specimen leads to locally different compressive stresses on the cross-section, and eventual premature breaking of the specimen. Its effect on a specimen can be quantified by comparing the compressive strength results of two specimens, one subjected to uniform strain and another to a specified strain gradient. This can be done with the help of a function that relates two parameters, the strain ratio and the test efficiency. Such a function depends on the concrete strength and cross-sectional shape of the specimen. In this study, theoretical relationships between the strain ratio and test efficiency are developed using a concrete stress-strain model. The results show that for the same strain ratio, the test efficiency is larger for normal strength concrete than for high strength concrete. Further, the effect of the strain gradient on the test result depends on the cross-sectional shape of the specimen. Implementation of the results is demonstrated with the aid of two examples.
The tensile strain dependency of critical current in YBCO coated conductors was examined at 77K and in the self magnetic field. A commercially available YBCO sample with Cu stabilizer layer was supplied. There existed a peak in the relation between the Ie and tensile strain, and the reversible variation of $I_c$ with applied tensile strain was found. In the neutral axis Ni alloy RABiTS-$Y_2O_3$/YSZ/$CeO_2$ buffered YBCO tape, the $I_c$ recovered reversibly until the applied strain reached to about 0.5%, representing that a significant residual compressive strain induced during cooling to 77 K influenced the axial strain tolerance of YBCO conductors. To investigate the strain and stress influence on the $I_c$, the stress-strain characteristics of YBCO conductors measured at 77 K were discussed.

This study investigates the ductility capacity of slender-wide reinforced concrete walls under predominant flexural moment loading. The experimental work for this study aims to provide design guidelines for bar detailing in critical regions under compressive stress in particular in case of slender-wide RC walls. According to the experimental observation the Bernoulli hypothesis of linear strain distribution is no longer valid and the ultimate compressive strain of concrete is significantly reduced, It is postulated that the nonlinear strain distribution causes the concentrated compressive stressed region and hence the premature crushing failure at the toe of walls. The reduced ultimate strain and nonlinear strain distribution need transverse reinforcement for confinement and more realistic models for the strength and displacement estimation of slender-wide RC wall.
Seismic performance of ordinary reinforced concrete shear wall systems commonly used in high-rise residential buildings is evaluated. Three types of shear walls exceeding 60m in height are designed by performance-based seismic design. Then, incremental dynamic analysis is performed collapse probability is assessed in accordance with the procedure of FEMA P695. As a result, story drift, plastic rotation, and compressive strain are observed to be major failure modes, but shear failure occur little. Collapse probability and collapse margin ratio of performance groups do not meet requirement of FEMA P695. It is observed that critical wall elements fail due to excessive compressive strain. Therefore, the compressive strain of concrete at the boundary area of the shear wall needs to be evaluated with more conservative acceptance criteria.
