The sintering behavior of zircon with silica was investigated. Zircon with 5 vol% of sedimentation $SiO_2$ resulted in the apparent density of $4.45\;g/cm^3$, the diametral tensile strength of $12.125\;kgf/cm^2$, and the micro Vickers hardness of 1283 HV. The dissociation temperature and mechanical characteristics of the $ZrSiO_4$ were changed with different kinds of $SiO_2$. $SiO_2$ addition prevented dissociation of $ZrSiO_4$. Zircon with 5 vol% of sedimentation $SiO_2$ and with 5 vol% of fused $SiO_2$ resulted in increased diametral tensile strength and increased micro Vickers hardness by suppression of $ZrSiO_4$ dissociation and low temperature liquid $SiO_2$ formation. Zircon with fumed $SiO_2$ and quartz $SiO_2$ resulted in decreased diametral tensile strength and decreased micro Vickers hardness because of cristobalite and quartz phase formation and high temperature liquid $SiO_2$ formation. Zircon with 10 vol% of $SiO_2$ resulted in decreased diametral tensile strength and decreased micro Vickers hardness because of weak particle coupling due to excess formation of liquid $SiO_2$.

Glass-ceramics based on lithium disilicate($Li_2Si_2O_5$) are prepared by heat-treatment of glasses in a system of $SiO_2-Li_2O-K_2O-Al_2O_3$ with different compositions. The crystallization heat-treatment was conducted at the temperature range of $700{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ and samples were analyzed by XRD and SEM. Mechanical properties were determined by a Vicker's hardness and 4 point bending strength. When $SiO_2/Li_2O$ ratio increased, cristobalite and tridymite crystals showed more predominate than lithium disilicate crystals. Increase in $Al_2O_3$ contents in the glass suppressed crystallzation of lithium disilicate crystals. Increase in ZnO, $B_2O_3$ contents in the glass decreased crystallization temperature of lithium disilicate crystals, and increased mechanical properties because of the reduction of the lithium disilicate crystal size.
We characterized the smelting process and smelting furnace through scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy, wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, and raman micro-spectroscopy with 13 relics including slags and furnace walls excavated from square-shaped building sites and pits of the Three Kingdoms site at the Ungyo site section I. Our results revealed that the principal components were FeO and SiO2; and CuO, PbO, and ZnO were contained in small quantities. Furthermore, fayalite, magnetite, augite, copper, and cuprite were found. High contents of FeO or SiO2 components seem to have been added to form fayalite to remove gangue in the smelting process. The relatively low content of S detected in the copper prills suggests that roasting was performed well. Cristobalite and mullite, which are minerals that indicate high-temperature found in the furnace wall, show that the smelting temperature was higher than 1,250℃. The findings of this study show a high possibility that the Wanju Ungyo site is smelting remains of copper ores, which are nonferrous metals, rather than iron. Various smelting byproducts excavated in this area in the future will help us better understand the copper smelting process that may have been performed since ancient times.
The hydration at $23^{\circ}C$ between $Ca(OH)_2$ and siliceous materials with various compositions of silica gel and quartz were studied in paste state, and also diatomite was empolyed as another form of silica. The effect of the structural state of silica on the pozzolanic reactivity was investigated by X-ray, DTA, electron microscopy, and chemical analysis. The results obtained were as follows. (1) The molar ratio of $Ca(OH)_2$ to silica gel(C/Sg) being changed in 0.49, 0.81 and 1.22, the free $Ca(OH)_2$ was disappeared within six hours, three days and two weeks respectively and ill-crystallized CSH(I) was formed. However, in the case fo molar ratio of C/Sg=2.45, almost lime was remained uncombinedly after twenty four weeks yet. (2) Though the molar ratio C/Sg of diatomite was 0.71, the hydration was stabilized at three weeks and the result exhibited very peculiar characteristics from silica gel. (3) Pozzolanic reactivity of quartz was negligible, but $\alpha$-cristobalite in diatomite showed appreciable reactivity. (4) The thermal curves showed the exothermic peaks in the range 830 to $930^{\circ}C$ and lower broad peaks at high temperature in the initial steps of hydration, transfered to lower temperature with sharp peaks by proceeding of hydration. (5) The samples containing more silica gel exhibited higher pozzolanic reactivity and martar strength, but the diatomite gave remarkable result for them and they were matched to the strength development rate.
Complex designed silica-based ceramic cores were fabricated by ceramic injection molding. Slow heating rate (0.2K/min) for debinding restrained bloating on the surface of ceramic cores. To investigate effect of sintering conditions on mechanical properties of ceramic cores, green bodies were sintered at temperatures in a range from $1150^{\circ}C$ to $1400^{\circ}C$ for various dwelling times (6 h to 48 h). Sintering above $1300^{\circ}C$ for 12 h and dwelling time over 24 h at $1200^{\circ}C$ reduce the flexural strength and increase the linear shrinkage of ceramic cores. Cristobalite, formed by high sintering temperature or long dwelling time, induces reduction of mechanical properties due to its phase transformation, which is accompanied by volume contraction and microcracking. Ceramic core sintered at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 12 h endured wax patterning and shell molding, and was manufactured successfully.

Sintered bodies were prepared from ${\alpha} - Al_2O_3/SiO_2$ composite powders which each alumina particles were surrounded by silica particles and investigated the mullitization behavior on the process of reaction - sintering. Mullitized reaction was started by formation of amorphous aluminosilicate inter - layer and proceeded by diffusion of alumina through this inter-layer. The growth of mullite was happened along the surface of alumina and controlled by the rate of diffusion.
Chulwha pieces collected from Hakbong-ri site in Keryong mountain were studied whether there is reactions or not in each layer to investigate firing condition of glaze, body, Chulwha, engobe of Buncheong ware in the early Chosun Dynasty, 15th~16th Century. As a result of XRD analysis of a Chulwha piece, a main crystal phase was $\alpha$-Quartz and a second was Mullite. It was assumed the firing temperature would be around $1200^{\circ}C$ because a little amount of Mullite was formed in the body and there was no phase transition $\alpha$-Quartz to cristobalite. As a result of ICRM analysis, Chulwha and glaze didn't react and the melted glazes were sunk into the Chunwha particles. The thin layer of glaze was found on the Chulwha layer. As a result, the color of Chulwha layer always came to vivid black. Moreover, Chulwha painting didn't spread over the Buncheong ware, because Chulwha and engobe didn't react. The boundary interface of engobe and body was not clear because they had similar compositions. This shows engobe was composed of more $Al_2O_3$ than body.
Fuller's earth deposits from Miocene sedimentary sequences in Gyeong Sang-do contain up to 95% Ca-montmorillonite accompanied by cristobalite, clinoptilolite, mordenite, quartz, feldspar and X-ray amorphous material. Differential thermal analysis, infrared and electron microscopic data are given for the montmorillonite component. The ease with which the exchangeable calcium of the montmorillonite could be replaced by sodium (to give a product with properties similar to that of a bentonite) was monitored by the Atterberg liquid limit test. Some samples tested as possible binders for foundry moulding sands gave results that compared favourably with material currently being used for this application. Many of the samples also met the OCMA specifications for clays used in drilling muds.

A low thermal expansion ceramic, cordierite ($2MgO{\cdot}2Al_2O_3{\cdot}5SiO_2$), was synthesized using pyrophyllite. Pyrophyllite usually consists of $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$, which are the main components of cordierite. $MgCO_3$ and $Al(OH)_3$ were added in various amounts to pyrophyllite and fired for synthesis and sintering. ${\alpha}$-cordierite crystallized from $1000^{\circ}C$ with mixing of 20 wt% $MgCO_3$ and 1.7 wt% $Al(OH)_3$, and un-reacted cristobalite was also detected with the cordierite. As the temperature was increased to $1400^{\circ}C$, the cordierite yield was gradually increased. Powder compacts of the synthesized cordierite were sintered between $1250^{\circ}C{\sim}1400^{\circ}C$; the sintered samples showed a low thermal expansion coefficient of $2.1{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ and typical sintering behavior. It is anticipated that it will be possible to synthesize cordierite ceramics on a mass production scale using the mineral pyrophyllite.

The possibility of using bulk talc as molding material was reviewed and tested with the measurement of thermal properties and computer simulations. The measured thermal conductivity and heat diffusivity($k{\rho}c$) of talc were $2.4W/m^{\circ}C$ and $6.6{\times}10^6J^2/m^4^{\circ}C^2s$, respectively. Thermal properties of talc could be ranked between those of sand mold and iron mold. Talc transforms into cristobalite and enstatite at $910^{\circ}C$, During the transformation volume and structure change, cracks appear on the surface and distortion occurs. Therefore talc can be used for molding material below $910^{\circ}C$ if carefully treated. Computer simulation was carried out to test whether talc insert could promote directional solidification in sand mold and iron mold. In sand mold, it was possible to achieve directional solidification of thin plate casting with the length to thickness ratio of 15, if both iron insert and talc insert were used. In iron mold, it was possible to achieve directional solidification only with talc insert.
