The susceptibility of cultivars of three bentgrass species (creeping, colonial, and velvet bentgrass) was evaluated on detached leaves assays with pink snow mold 9 isolates caused by Microdochum nivale in Petri dishes and whole plants under controlled conditions. The pink snow mold isolates obtained from infected turfgrasses on golf courses in Wisconsin were tested on response of fungicides and temperature. Detached leaf assay and susceptibility of bentgrass cultivars were evaluated with potted adult seeding during 80 days. Nine isolates were susceptible to two fungicides and were significantly different among isolates. Mycelial growth was varied in response of temperatures among isolates. There were significant differences in development and colonization of the fungus on detached leaf assay among bentgrass species include culvitars. There were significant differences on whole plants in disease severities among the three bentgrass species, particularly between tetraploids (creeping and colonial) and diploid (velvet) species, and among cultivars within each species, indicating that there are varying levels of susceptibility in species and cultivars to M. nivale. This study could be applied to evaluate the susceptibility of bentgrass to pink snow mold and also to predict a prospective evaluation of bentgrass cultivars to pink snow mold in fields in a breeding program.
Thermal stress and elastic creeping stress analysis was conducted by finite element method to simulate start-up process of a boiler header of 500MW standard fossil power plant. Start-up temperature and operating pressure history were simplified from the real field data and they were used for the thermal stress analysis. Two kinds of thermal stress analysis were considered. In the first case only temperature increase was considered and in the second case both of temperature and operating pressure histories were considered. In the first analysis peak stress was occurred during the temperature increase from the room temperature. Hence cracking or fracture may occur at the temperature far below the operating maximum temperature. In the results of the second analysis von Mises stress appeared to be higher after the second temperature increase. This is due to internal pressure increase not due to the thermal stress. When the stress components of radial(r), hoop($\theta$) and longitudinal(z) stress were investigated, compression hoop stress was occurred at inner surface of the stub tube when the temperature increased from room temperature to elevated temperature. Then it was changed to tension hoop stress and increased because of the operating pressure. It was expected that frequent start-up and shut-down operations could cause thermal fatigue damage and cracking at the stub tube hole in the header. Elastic-creeping analysis was also carried out to investigate the stress relaxation due to creep and stabilized stress after considerable elapsed time. The results could be used for assessing the creep damage and the residual life of the boiler header during the long-tenn service.
Nature of magnetic creep phenomena in low coercive force films(Ni 80%-Fe 20%) in form of narrow channels imbedded in high coercive force films is studied in this work. Aluminium is evaporated on the hot glass substrate and eched free in the shape of narrow channels by photoetoetching method. then, Permalloy(Ni 80%, Fe 20%) is deposited on these Aluminium substrate under the uniform field of 30(Oe) to introduce anisotropy. Permalloy film on Al has a high coercive force and one on the substrate devoid of Al has how coercive force. Magnetic revers domain which is introduced at the end of channel grows under the a.c field in hard axis direction, in spite of very weak d.c field in easy axis direction. This creeping is investigated as a function of external fields and channel widths. Permalloy film thickness is 500.angs.-900.angs. and channel widths are 40, 51, 65, 81, 115.mu. respectively. Creeping increases as external field increases while it decreases with channel width decrease. Creep velocity in channels depends on the a.c field along hard axis, d.c field along easy axis and channel widths and its range is 1-10cm/sec in this experiment. From study of dependence of creep velocity on channel width, it can be concluded that creep velocity is expressed in form of v=v$_{0}$ exp .alpha.(H-H$_{0}$) where .alpha. is a function of a.c field along hard axis and H is driving d.c field along easy axis, H$_{0}$ is not a coercive force of film as usuall expected but the d.c threshold field along easy axis which is a function of channel width. This characteristic is also confirmed by the study of dependence of creep velocity upon easy axis field strength. Value of .alpha. obtained is 1.3-2.3cm/sec We depending upon film charactor, hard axis field strength and frequency.uency.
Pythium blight occurred by Pythium aphanidermatum on chewing fescue cv. "Jamestowm II" from early June, 2010 and 2011 at the test field in Daegu University in Gyeongbuk Province, Korea. Disease symptoms on the turfgrass were leaf blights dying from the leaf tip and root rot, which appeared patches of brown to dark brown color or gray brown color in the field. The pathogens (40-1 isolate) of Pythium blight was isolated from the diseased leaf and crown tissue and cultured on potato-dextrose agar (PDA) for identification. Lobulate sporangia were inflated, complex structures, and filamentous sporangia were usually indistinguishable from vegetative hyphae. Sequences of ribosomal RNA gene of the fungus were homologous with similarity of 100% to those of P. aphanidermatum isolates in GenBank database. Pathogenicity was also confirmed on the chewing fescue, creeping betgrass and Kentucky bluegrass by Koch's postulates. This is the first report of Pythium blight on chewing fescue caused by P. aphanidermatum in Korea.
The objective of this study was to improve the recycling rate of coal ash fly, industrial waste. This study was conducted to analyze the physico-chemical properties of \"CellCaSi\" and clarify the effects on the growth of Kentucky bluegrass(Poa pratensis L.) and creeping bentgrass(Agrostis paulstris Huds \"Penncross\") and the chemical properties of soil, which was cellular calcium silicate reproduced by coal ash fly. A field assay was carried out in Young-Pyong Golf Course. The results were as follows. 1. The main chemical composition of CellCaSi was $SiO_2$(45~55%) and CaO(25~35), which was 70~90% of total weight. CellCaSi showed pH 8~9. Bulk density of CellCaSi was 0.35~0.45g/㎤. Water content of CellCaSi was 52.5~67.5%. 2. In the applied plots, leaf width, grass density per $1\textrm{cm}^2$, rhizome number and length per plant, and root number per plant of Kentucky bluegrass(Poa pratensis L.) and creeping bentgrass(Agrostis paulstris Huds \"Penncross\") showed increasing tendency compared with the control. The application of CellCaSi increased the growth of turfgrasses. Their visual quality on hardness, grass shoot density per $1\textrm{cm}^2$ and root growth was very good. And, their visual quality on rhizome growth was good. 3. After the application of CellCaSi, pH, CEC, Ex-cation of the applied soil showed increasing tendency with the little range, $SiO_2$content increasing tendency considerably, and organic matter content decreasing tendency compared with the control.ncy compared with the control.
Five turfgrass species and 46 cultivars were investigated for difference of spring greenup and living ground cover. Turf color and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) for greenup were investigated between species and cultivars. Turf color and NDVI were showed significantly different among species and cultivars. Turf color was showed significantly different among 20 cultivars of kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.). NDVI was significantly difference among 20 cultivars of kentucky bluegrass and 6 cultivars of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb). The percentage living ground cover was showed significantly different among creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds) cultivars and fineleaf fescue cultivars in spring.

The effects of high polymer on the seedling survival were investigated in three major turfgrasses. Twelve treatments were used in the study with different rates of sand, soil organic amendment (SOA), and water-swelling polymer (WSP). Turfgrass seedling survival rate was evaluated in creeping bentgrass (CB), Kentucky bluegrass (KB), and zoysiagrass (Zoy) grown under greenhouse conditions. Significant differences were observed among the treatments. Seedling survival rates were variable in CB, KB, and Zoy according to mixing rates of SOA and WSP, being maximum 20.2% in differences. At 6 weeks after seeding, the survival rates ranged from 0.6 to 61.9% in CB, 4.2 to 75.3% in KB and 1.7 to 82.1% in Zoy. A pattern of seedling emergence varied with time among treatments influenced by WSP rates. A proper mixing rate of WSP is considered to be 5% for CB and 5 to 10% for KB and Zoy. In general, overall effect of WSP on seedling survival was clearly observed in the mixtures of sand 80% and SOA 20% in CB. The best result, however, was found from the mixture of sand 85% and SOA 15% in both KB and Zoy. When mixing sand with WSP, a proper rate of SOA is considered to be 20% for CB and 15 to 20% for KB, while 10 to 15% for Zoy. A further research is needed to investigate the effects of WSP on the turf quality in mixtures of sand, SOA, and WSP before a field application.
The extended analysis on the diverging flow through asymmetric membrane pores has been performed in this study. Afore rigorous equations of velocity profile relevant to the divergent slit and cone shaped channels, which are widely used as a general pore model, have been obtained by employing a creeping flow approach of Newtonian fluids. As a degree of asymmetry (i.e., diverging angle) is increased, the predicted flow function shifts Toward the center region due to the incorporated wall effect, so that the overall velocity profile becomes decreased. It is true, as expected, that when the divergent channel is in the low diverging angle limit, the channel flow results in the Poiseuillean fashion by utilizing a lubrication approximation. The flow rate equation of each type of channel has been developed from the combined solution of velocity profile and pressure fields. The effect of diverging flow on the flow rate enhancement has been remarkably predicted, in which the flow rate increases with the increase of pore asymmetry. The advantage of our theoretical results lies in the analytical expression for the diverging flow behavior through pore channels as well as its ability to play a fundamental role on the related membrane filtrations such as microfiltration and ultrafiltration.
Incidence of Rhizoctonia blight ranged from 22.2% to 100% in the golf courses at six geographical locations in Korea from 1989 to 1993. Rhizoctonia blight occurred more severly in southern area than in northern area. Fifty seven isolates of Rhizoctonia solani obtained from diseased parts of zoysiagrasses were grouped to AG2-2 by anastomosis test. Pathogenicity testes revealed that this pathogen was strongly pathogenic to Korean lawngrasses(Zoysia japonica, Z. matrella, Z. tenuifolia), but not pathogenic to creeping bentgrass(Agrostis palustris), bermuldagrass(Cynodon dactylon), Kentucky bluegrass(Poa pratensis), perennial ryegrass(Lolium prenne), and creeping red fescue(Festuca rubra subsp. rubra L.). The isolation frequency of R. solani AG2-2 fro sheaths of the infected plants was the highest by 91.67%, and that from stolons and roots was 11.13% and 5.63% respectively. The pathogen was not isolated from the leaves. Population density of R. solani in the lawn of large circular patch was highest on surface soils down to 1 cm deep with the value of 4.9$\times$104 (CFU/g soil), but below 1 cm population density decreased sharply down to 0.8~9.8$\times$103 (CFU/g soil). Horizontal distribution of propagules in turfgrass soil was higher in the margin than in center of patch, where the number of propagules was similar to these of healthy looking soils close to the margin of diseased patch. The meteorological factors influencing the outbreak of the disease were temperature, the number of rainy days and precipitation. Optimum temperature for disease development of Rhizoctonia blight in field was 20~22$^{\circ}C$, and that for hyphal growth of R. solani AG2-2 in vitro was 25~3$0^{\circ}C$. In Pusan area, Rhizoctonia blight first occurred in late April and rapidly developed in late June. The disease slightly decreased during July to August and developed again in late September in 1993. The monthly disease progress in Pusan area was similar to that in Kyeonggi province.

It was previously pointed out that mutation is the ultimate source of variation. Adequate variation is needed for plant breeding if there is a limitation in natural genetic resources. When the ionizing radiation has been known to cause chromosomal and genomic alternations, it is widely used for inducing mutagenesis. The electron beam as an ionizing radiation is the principal physical mutagens that induces mutation and effectively used in plant breeding. Since dose-response relationships of electron beam in plant species are rarely known, we investigated the seed germination rate and early seedling growth of irradiated seeds of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds., cv Penn-A1) with various electron beam irradiating conditions (1, 1.3, 2 MeV at both 0.03 mA and 0.06 mA with dose of 100 Gy (Gray) and 0.03, 1, 1.3, 2 MeV at 0.03 mA with dose of 200 Gy, respectively) using electron accelerator at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. The growth parameters in terms of shoot length, primary root length, and secondary root length showed similar response between 0.06 / 1 (mA / MeV) at 100 Gy and 0.03 / 0.3 (mA / MeV) at 200 Gy. Bentgrass seed germination was mainly affected by the intensity of irradiated dose (Gray). Germination rate was lowered as the irradiated dose increased. On the other hand, early seedling growth was mainly governed not by the dose of radiation but by voltage.
