  • The indentation test, which is one of the testing methods for evaluating the mechanical properties of materials, can be applied to the evaluation of creep properties. Many studies related to the indentation creep test, however, have just focused on the characteristics of the steady-state creep, so there are wide discrepancies between the uniaxial test and the indentation test. To obtain accurate creep properties, it is therefore important to consider the effects of transient creep. In the present work, the Ogbonna et al.'s work on the spherical indentation test including the transient creep was expanded and applied to the conical indentation creep test. The characteristics of the transient creep were analyzed via finite element simulations and compared with those obtained through spherical indentation. Other effects, such as elastic strain, indenter shape, contact area, and representative strain, which have not been considered properly in prior studies on the creep test, are also discussed.

  • This paper presents the rheological properties of bitumen for reducing negative skin friction. The bitumen has been widely used due to both the cost and construction effectiveness. Also, it is well known that the use of bitumen for reducing negative skin friction renders the best results among other available methods. Three different modified bitumens were used for the testing programs. The physical tests include the penetration, the softening point and penetration index. The rheological tests include phase angle, complex modulus, creep tests and flow tests. The tests were conducted at four different temperatures(15, 30, 45 and 6$0^{\circ}C$) in order to simulate the field condition. The test results were analyzed using the phase angle, G$^*$/sin $\delta$, creep compliance and shear viscosity. The result of tests showed that the phase angle increased and G$^*$/sin $\delta$ decreased with the increase of temperature. The creep compliance increased as the loading time increased. The difference of the creep compliance is detected as the time and temperature are varied, however, the difference of the shear viscosity is not significant among the samples tested in this study. The rheological properties of the bitumen also showed that the physical testing method and the temperature dependant testing method are somewhat limited to showing and expressing the full rheological properties of the modified bitumen. The introduction of the time and the temperature dependent testing method is necessary to find out the full rheological properties of the modified bitumen.

  • PURPOSES: SUPERPAVE binder grade tests including Multiple Stress Creep and Recovery(MSCR) test are applied to evaluate rheological properties of four polymer modified binders. METHODS: To evaluate grade of four modified binders, PG testing protocols, such as DSR, BBR and MSCR are employed. RESULTS: It is observed that MSCR test shows different performance grades especially on modified binders. Both DMP and EG binder show similar high temperature performance to SBS 5% modified binder. CONCLUSIONS: Binder Grading system in Korea need to be reviewed to properly reflect the performnace of modified binders. The binders modified with DMP and EG can be possible alternatives SBS 5% modified binder considering its performance and cost.

  • The tensile and creep behaviors of Alloy 263, which is a wrought Ni-base superalloy used for gas turbine combustion systems, was studied. Anomalous increase of yield strength and abrupt decrease of elongation with increasing temperature were observed after tensile testing at an intermediate temperature. Elongation of the superalloy decreased as the temperature increased to and above 540$^{\circ}C$, and it reached a minimum value at 760$^{\circ}C$. It was found that creep strain was also very low at the same temperature. Inhomogeneous deformation with intensive slip bands was observed in the specimens tested at low temperature. A thermally-assisted dislocation climb process was regularly conducted at high temperature. Twinning was found to be an important mechanism of both tensile and creep deformations of the superalloy at an intermediate temperature where ductility minimum was observed.

  • The settlement characteristics of waste landfill site must be considered in the design of sanitary landfill as well as in the course of the rehabilitation of the landfill site. Among prediction methods for settlement of landfill site, especially Gibson and Lo model and Power Creep Law have been successfully applied to the landfill site where the amount of settlement was large and the secondary settlement was obvious. Therefore, the effects of organic content on the model parameter values utilized in both Gibson Lo model and Power Creep Law were studied by using a large consolidation testing apparatus. The organic content is each 20%, 40%, 60% of total volume and consolidation load is $0.1{\sim}1.6kg/cm^2$. The main results can be summarized as follows: (1) The reference compressibility of Power Creep Law is decreased according to the increments of consolidation load: (2) The field measurement is more similar to the Power Creep Law than the Gibson and Lo model.

  • Since the 1990s, the second generation of Zirconium alloys containing main alloy compositions of Nb, Sn and Fe have been used as a replacement of Zircaloy-4 (Zr-Sn-Fe-Cr), a first-generation Zirconium alloy, to meet severe and rigorous reactor operating conditions characterized by high-burn-up, high-power and high-pH operations. In this study, the mechanical properties and creep behaviors of Zr-Sn-Fe-Cr and Zr-Nb-Sn-Fe alloys were investigated in a temperature range of $450{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ and in a stress range of $80{\sim}150\;MPa$. The mechanical testing results indicate that the yield and tensile strengths of the Zr-Nb-Sn-Fe alloy are slightly higher compared to those of Zr-Sn-Fe-Cr. This can be explained by the second phase strengthening of the $\beta$-Nb precipitates. The creep test results indicate that the stress exponent for the steady-state creep rate decreases with the increase in the applied stress. However, the stress exponent of the Zr-Sn-Fe-Cr alloy is lower than that of the Zr-Nb-Sn-Fe alloy in a relatively high stress range, whereas the creep activation energy of the former is slightly higher than that of the latter. This can be explained by the dynamic deformation aging effect caused by the interaction of dislocations with Sn substitutional atoms. A higher Sn content leads to a lower stress exponent value and higher creep activation energy.

  • The typical heat-resisting rotor steels such as 2.25CrMo, 9CrMo and 12CrW steel were experimentally studied in order to understand their materials degradation under high temperature and pressure during the long-term service, and then use the basic studies for the structural health monitoring. In order to monitor the materials degradation, it was conducted by the isothermal aging for 2.25CrMo steel, creep-fatigue for 9CrMo steel and creep for 12Cr steel with the incremental step test. The ultrasonic wave properties, electrical resistivity and coercivity were interpreted in relation to microstructural changes at each material and showed strong sensitivity to the specific microstructural evolution.

  • This paper shows a study of the efficiency of expansive additive and shrinkage reducing admixture in controlling restrained shrinkage cracking of high performance concrete at early age. Free autogenous shrinkage test of $100{\times}100{\times}400mm$ concrete specimens and simulated completely-restrained test with VRTM(variable restraint testing machine) were performed. Creep and autogenous shrinkage of high-performance concrete with and without expansive additive and shrinkage reducing admixture were investigated by experiments that provided data on free autogenous shrinkage and restrained shrinkage. The results showed that the addition of expansive additive and shrinkage reducing admixture effectively reduced autogenous shrinkage and tensile stress in the restrained conditions. Also, it was found that the shrinkage stress was relaxed by 90% in high-performance concrete with and without expansive additive and shrinkage reducing admixtures at early age.
