  • Time dependent deflections of double composite box girders are investigated based on the on going laboratory experiments scheduled for 3months long. Two of 2-span double composite box girders with 2.5m each span length are cast and time dependent behaviors are measured using 30 strain gages and 2 LVDTs after 5 days' curing. The measured experimental results are compared with the numerical predictions performed based on the one dimensional finite element method adopting beam element. The FEM formulation adopts the time dependent concrete constitutive model which is derived in an incremental format by expanding the total form of stress-strain relation by the first order Taylor series with respect to the reference time. A good agreement between the measured and predicted results are observed and the effects of the bottom concrete placed at the negative moment region of the bridge girder are discussed.

  • Highrise concrete buildings are very sensitive to cumulative and differential shortening of their vertical element such as wall and columns. Inelastic deformation due to creep and shrinkage consist of various factors and load history af actual building is very complicated. Therefore, for the accurate prediction and compensation of axial shortening, special efforts in design and construction phase are required to ensure long-term serviceability and strength requirement. In this paper, axial shortening estimation and compensation procedure is presented, which utilized experimentally determined concrete properties and preliminary load history and computerized approach, in case of Plaza Rakyat office tower, 79-story reinforced concrete building under construction in Malaysia.

  • This study was performed to examine the effect of time dependent properties on RC columns in subway structures subjected to high filled soil layer. By using Program TCC which is a modified version of CPF for the present purpose, a typical column in subway structure was analyzed. Four different model equations for predicted time dependent concrete properties(ACI, CEB-FIP, Bazant & Panula and Korea Bridge Specification) was employed, and the results were compared. It was found that a relevant creep coefficient is recommended to be 1.0 for designing columns in subway structure, and the sol filling work would be performed at least 3 months later after the concrete casting in order to ensure durability by reducing the negative effect of concrete time dependent properties.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the flexural behaviour of sandwich constructions with cement concrete core and polymer concrete facings. Six different cross-sectional shapes using epoxy based polymer concrete facings were investigated. Some of the results from the static tests are given including the load-deflection responses, load-strain relationships, ultimate moment, and mode of failure. From the. results the following conclusions can be made. 1. The various strengths of polymer concrete were very high compared to the strengths for portland cement concrete, while modulus of elasticity assumed an aspect of contrast. 2. The thickness of core and facing exerted a great influence on the deflection and ultimate strenght of polymer concrete sandwich constructions. 3. The variation shape of deflection and strain depend on loading were a very close approximation to the straight line. The ultimate strain of polymer concrete at the end of tensile side were ranged from 625x10-6 to 766x10-6 and these values increased in proportion to the decrease of thickness of core and facings. 4. The ultimate moments of polymer sandwich constructions were 3 to 4 times that of cement concrete constructions which was transformed same section. It should he noted that polymer concrete have an effect on the reinforcement of weak constructions. 5. Further tests are neede to investigate the shear strain of constructions, and thermal expansion, shrinkage and creep of cement and polymer concrete which were composite materials of sandwich constructions.

  • This paper presents the analytical method for the long-term behavior of simply supported composite beams with precast decks prestressed in the longitudinal direction. The objectives of time-dependent analysis are to estimate losses of prestress on the concrete slab and long-term deflection due to creep and shrinkage of concrete, relaxation of prestressing steel. Also, the time-dependent analysis was carried out using the presented analytical method to evaluate the effects of several parameters on the long-term behavior of composite bridge with precast deck, including geometrical shapes of composite beams, compressive strength of concrete and magnitude of initial prestress. The results of the analysis indicated that, in the effects of geometrical shapes of composite beams, the main parameters affecting the losses of prestress and the long-term deflection were the cross sectional area and the moment of inertia of steel beam, respectively. Finally, the determination method for the required initial prestress was proposed by evaluation of the loss characteristics due to shrinkage and creep of concrete.

  • For the early seismic isolation design in Korea, foreign products of isolation bearings were used. But these days, the application of domestic products of isolation bearings is increasing. However various experimental studies can be found very seldom on the extreme and lonr term behaviors of isolation bearings. In this study, we considered the laminated rubber type isolation bearings that have many application cases in Korea and we evaluated their shear strength, long term characteristics such as aging and creep affecting shear strength of bearings in long term period. For the reality of experiments, fabricated isolation bearing specimens are designed for a real structure and shear loading was applied under design compressive loads. To evaluated aging effect, the specimens were exposed to high temperature environment for certain period and their shear properties were measured to compare with their original values. Also we measured creep amount of isolation bearings under constant compressive load for 1,000 hours and estimated creep amount after 60 years compatible with general life cycle of bridges.

  • In this paper a study on prestressed concrete slab bridges is presented. A design philosophy based on the concept of load balancing through prestressing is proposed in order to minimize the effects of delayed deformations due to creep. Aspects related to the stress redistribution inside these bridges for time-dependent phenomena are analyzed and discussed, by applying the principles of aging linear visco-elasticity. Prestressing is seen as an equivalent external load which counterbalances the permanent loads applied to the bridge, nullifying the elastic deflections due to sustained loads, and thus avoiding the related delayed deformations. An optimization of the structural behavior through the use of one-way prestressing is achieved. The determination of a convenient variable depth of slab bridges and the correspondent layout of tendons is considered as a useful means for applying the load balancing concept in actual cases of structures like long cantilevers or bridge decks. A case-study related to the slab bridges built 30 years ago at Jeddah in Saudi Arabia is presented and discussed, in order to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach to the conceptual design of prestressed concrete bridges.

  • Concrete has been recognized as a material which is resistant to high temperatures, but chemicophysical property of concrete is changed by the high temperature. So, mechanical properties of concrete may be reduced. Because of this, standards and researches on the degradation of the mechanical properties of concrete at high temperatures have been presented. However, research data about the state that considering the loading condition and high-strength concrete is not much. Therefore, this study evaluated the high-temperature properties of high-strength concrete by loading condition and elevated temperature. The stress-strain, strain at peak stress, compressive strength, elastic modulus, thermal strain and the transient creep are evaluated under the non-loading and $0.25f_{cu}$ loading conditions on high strength concrete of W/B 12.5%, 14.5% and 20%. Result of the experiment, decrease in compressive strength due to high temperature becomes larger as the compressive strength increases, and residual rate of elastic modulus and compressive strength is high by the shrinkage caused by loading and thermal expansion due to high temperature are offset from each other, at a temperature above $500^{\circ}C$.

  • This paper presents an analytical prediction of nonlinear characteristics and behavior characteristics PSC structures with un-bonded tendon system. In this paper, a numerical model for un-bonded tendon is proposed based on the finite element method, which can represent straight or curved un-bonded tendon behavior. this model and time-dependent material model used to investigate the time-dependent behavior of un-bonded prestressed concrete structures. The accuracy and objectivity of the assessment process may be enhanced by the use of sophisticated nonlinear finite element analysis program. A computer program, named RCAHEST(Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of concrete structures and steel plate was used. The material nonlinearities are taken into account by comprising the tension, compression, and shear models of cracked concrete and models for reinforcements and tendons in the concrete. The smeared crack approach is incorporated. It accounts for the aging, creep and shrinkage of concrete and the stress relaxation of prestressed steel. The proposed un-bonded tendon model and numerical method of un-bonded prestressed concrete structures is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.

  • The mechanical properties of Recycled Aggregate Concrete (RAC) with 100 percent Recycled Coarse Aggregate (RCA) under loading rates were investigated in depth. The theoretical model was validated utilizing the RAC elastic modulus obtained from cylindrical specimens subjected to various strain rates. Viscoelastic theories have traditionally been used to describe creep and relaxation of viscoelastic materials at low strain rates. In this study, viscoelastic theories were extended to the time domain of high strain rates. The theory proposed was known as reversed viscoelastic theory. Normalized Dirichlet-Prony theory was used as an illustration, and its parameters were determined. Comparing the predicted results to the experimental data revealed a high level of concordance. This methodology demonstrated its ability to characterize the strain rate effect for viscoelastic materials, as well as its applicability for determining not only the elastic modulus for viscoelastic materials, but also their shear and bulk moduli.
