  • Customary way of thinking may be the most major stumbling block to creative thinking in basic design education in the information and network era. The basic design education was used to be based on personal experience or subjective ideas, but these days, the role of divergent thinking and convergent thinking which provide the basis of creative techniques has been closely examined. Going beyond a divergent thinking and directly starting a convergent thinking means bypassing the design process of the existing basic design education. Though preceding studies considered various creative techniques apart from divergent thinking and convergent thinking, this study presumed that complementing the most typical methods of divergent thinking and convergent thinking may result in the same basic design education effect. So, what approach must be used to the design? The way of thinking needs to change. For that, we try to apply the mapping to basic design education. It must encompass interactive thinking which includes immaterial elements and communication. Divergent thinking can begin with the accurate understanding of current state, and the created current state resolves the design process that needs to be a certain thing. The purpose of this study was to present the method for applying the mapping techniques to basic design education based on divergent and convergent thinking which provides the basis of creative ideas.

  • Elementary school pupils frequently have difficult acquiring creative writing skills, i.e. how to develop the idea to be expressed, how to compose the materials of the outcome or contents. In this paper, we focus on the problems of how to support creative writing work to arrange materials in order to formulate ideas as the stories develop. the stories develop. The basic ideas behind the method are that(1) a basic story is automatically generated by GA-based operations and shown to a user as sequences of pictures, (2) IGA(Interactive Genetic Algorithm) is used to evaluate and select a preferred story, (3) the results are combined with previously stored stories using case-based techniques. Based on these ideas, we have developed a computer supported environment for this purpose and conducted related experiments.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest the plans, which can creatively utilize Korean images by introducing the SCAMPER technique, one of the techniques used to create ideas in the fashion design process. For the research methods, the case study which collects all the masters' theses relating to the fashion design process applied Korean images for recent 10 years and the literature study through books, masters' theses, academic journals' theses, news articles, and Internet data were done together. As for the result of the study, the level of utilization of Korean images in the researches on Korean fashion designs stayed simple utilization, which used a motif as it is in its original form or changed only the size. Furthermore, of the 39 theses reviewed in the study, 59% of them used less than 3 of the 7 SCAMPER items. Therefore, it could be said that the Korean images are restrictively being used in the fashion design studies. If SCAMPER is to be actively utilized as a design process in the future, it is expected that it will make great contributions to the development of creative Korean fashion design.

  • Fashion professionals these days agree that changes in the fashion business are essential and highly value creativity as a genuine source for generating new ideas in fashion products as well as fashion business practices. As fashion professionals deal with problems of which solutions do not exist or that need innovative solutions for brand or product differentiation in the fast-paced environments, interest in creativity and creative problem solving in the field has increased; therefore, fashion educators have realized that there has been an increasing need for incorporating creativity or creative problem solving into the fashion curriculum. In this study, the researcher intended to review previous research on the use of creative problem solving in classrooms in various disciplines including the field of fashion education to provide insights and suggestions for fashion educators to integrate creative problem solving into the fashion education curriculum. Previous attempts to apply creative problem solving to solve issues in fashion classrooms have mostly limited to promoting divergent thinking techniques. It is suggested for fashion educators as well as fashion students to consider creative problem solving as a process consisting of the four distinct stages in which both divergent and convergent thinking techniques should be properly utilized stimulating various thinking strategies.

  • In the post-modern society, creativity is redefined as a capability which collects a wide range of information and recombines them in diverse manners. With a such trend, the characteristics of collage - a method of making a creative image by combining pieces which have no relevance - is becoming prevalent in the post-modern culture. The purpose of this research is to develop a model which generates ideas in fashion design by use of collage techniques. With regard to research methodology, a literature survey was undertaken to find out and understand characteristics of collage. Analytic and positive studies were also done on the styles of fashion design of the 2003 SS collections to which collage techniques applied. In order to generate ideas in fashion design, the following mechanism using collage techniques can be used. Above all, pluralism is realized by collecting incoherent elements. Secondly, deconstruction is made by changing scales and configuration. Lastly, relativity is attained by using parts of ready-made goods and respecting their independency.

  • This study is a proposal for the positive application of collage techniques into the process of interior design. For that, we need to set up the appropriate definitions of collage and to analyze its properties as a creative design methode of that field, in the basis of the twentieth-century art history. The study is divided into three sections as follows: 1) The traces of collage in the art movements such as Cubism, Dada, Surealism, and Pop art will be researched in terms of art concepts, appearances and, properties. 2) The relationships between collage and the main ideas of those art movements, as mentioned above, will be discussed for proving that collage is such an effective techniques as to erdxxly Post-modem ideas. 3) The examples of collage techniques and their effects appearing in Post-modem interior spaces will be surveyed for the purpose of proving its abilities as a creative design methode in interior design. Further studies should be succeeded for suggesting practical and educational models of its application.
