  • Modem reciprocating air compressors have tendency to a multi-stage W-type or V-type cylinder arrangement for the purpose of high outlet pressure, compactness and low vibration and noise. A valid counter weight calculation method using the complex expression is proposed for reducing the inertia forces of the compressor. Counter weight removes only 1st forward whirl component. Counter weight formulations are applied to the six various compressor structures which are (a) 1 cylinder single-throw crank shaft, (b) 2 cylinder single-throw crank shaft (c) 2 cylinder double-throw clank shaft, (d) 3 cylinder single-throw crank shaft, (e) 4 cylinder single-throw crank shaft and (f) 4 cylinder double-throw crank shaft. The improvement of performance is verified through available vibration test.

  • A crank throw, which is one of the part of crankshaft for a large diesel engine, is manufactured by both closed die forging and open die forging. For the improvement of productivity the open die forging method is usually adopted to manufacture it these days. In case of the open die forging for the crank throw, a preform shape is very important because it seriously affects final dimensions of the product. The purpose of this study is to investigate affective factors of the preform to obtain a good shape of final product through simulation and the results are compared to downsized lead experiments.

크랭크스로 단조강의 피로수명의 확률분포 추정 (Estimation of Probability Distribution of Fatigue Lives in Crank Throw Forged Steel)

  • Because of the severe service environment of the large marine vessel, the fatigue strength and its evaluation play an important role in design and maintenance of marine crankshaft. The aim of this work is to investigate the probability distribution of fatigue lives in crank throw forged steel and to develop the methodology for estimation of the probabilistic design fatigue strength. Detailed studies were performed on the constant amplitude axial loading fatigue test. The experiments were controlled by stress ratio of -1 and 15Hz frequency for each stress level. The considerable variability of fatigue life was observed in each stress level under rigidly controlled constant fatigue testing conditions. The fatigue life of crank throw forged steel was well followed the log-normal and Weibull distribution. In addition, it can be used for the estimation of probabilistic design fatigue strength by using the proposed methodology.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the optimum shape of blank for the crank throw of large marine engine in order to reduce manufacturing cost and forging defects. The effects of the curvature radius and the height of wing part of blank selected as design variables on the defects and machining margin of final products after forging process were investigated using FEA. Based on the results, the optimum shape for the blank of the crank throw was proposed and verified by experiment.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate a closed-die forging method for large crank throw using analytical and numerical approaches. A closed-die forging equipment with wedge and links was proposed to forge large crank throw using kinematic analysis. The minimum press capacity for the closed-die forging was established using the comprehensive FEA.

  • A crank throw, which is one of the crankshaft part for a large diesel engine is manufactured by closed die forging or open die forging. For the purpose of improvement of productivity the open die forging is usually adopted these days. However it has disadvantage of low yield ratio compare to closed die forging. To overcome this problem, the material properties for hot top and bottom zones of ingot are investigated to utilize them to the product and a modified forging process to reduce the material loss of ingot body through forging analysis according to forging factors(a , R, Ø$\sub$B/, Ø$\sub$D/) is suggested.

  • 본 논문은 스테어케이스법을 사용하여 크랭크 스로 부품용 S34MnV강의 피로한도의 신뢰도를 평가하는 것이다. 크랭크 스로 부품의 소재는 S34MnV이며, 뜨임 및 풀림 열처리된 단조강이다. 본 연구에서는 설계피로강도의 신뢰도를 예측하기 위해 축 하중 일정진폭 피로시험을 수행하였다. 시험편은 평균응력 0 MPa의 동일한 응력부하를 적용하였고, 즉 응력비는 -1로 하였다. 피로시험 결과는 Dixon-Mood 접근법으로 평가하였다. 스테어케이스법에 의해 예측된 피로강도의 평균과 표준편차는 각각 296.3 MPa 및 10.6 MPa로 나타났다. 마지막으로 어떤 임의의 파손 확률에 대한 피로강도의 신뢰도를 예측하였다. 본 연구에서 제안한 예측법은 단조강의 설계 최적화를 위한 피로강도 값을 결정할 수 있다.

폭연신계수를 이용한 플랜지단조의 초기형상설계 (preform Design by Use of Spread Coefficient for Flange Forging)

  • A large crank shaft for ship engine consists of several components, such as throw, jornal, pin and flange. These compoents are individually made by open-die forging followed by machining and they are thermally fitted to form the crankshaft. In the present investigation, it was attempted to design an optimum preform for the throw by use of the spread coefficient. The spread coefficient found in the literature was confirmed by comparison with experimental results using plasticine. However, the preform designed by the spread coefficient was unable to produce the final product. The reason was found that the spread coefficient differs distinctly for the magnitude of bite ratio. Therefore, another spread coefficient, especially for low bite ratios, was proposed and the preform was redesigned. It was found that the new preform was able to produce the final product.

  • Investigation of the mass effect on the journal traces in the clearance of engine bearing has been performed for better design of mass distribution of crank system components such as crank pin, piston, con-rod, balance weight, crank throw weight, etc. as well as for better oil reaction behaviors to the applied forces from the cylinder pressures on the bearing. In this preliminary study, crank pin traces in the engine bearing clearance are computed by varying the equivalent magnitude of crank pin mass that includes the masses of crank pin, piston, con-rod. etc.. while most previous studies regarding journal traces in the bearing clearance neglect the inertia effects of crank pin mass. Although the inertia effect of pill mass is negligibly small compared to viscous force by ${\pi}bearing$ theory, it is found that it gives a great amount of influences on the journal traces in full bearing computation $(2\pi\;bearing\;theory)$ under the dynamic loading conditions.

  • This paper presents results of coupled axial and torsional vibration analysis of shafting system in large diesel engines and generators for stationary power plants. Axial vibration of the shafting system takes place due to mainly torsional deformation or vibration and breathing effect of crank throws, caused by cylinder gas forces and reciprocating inertia of the engine. Cross-coupled stiffness matrix of the crank throws is calculated employing a finite element model of the crank throw and a static condensation method. Forced response analysis of the shafting system is performed using the calculated stiffness matrix and derived governing equations.
