  • In this paper, a simplified evaluation method of the skeleton curve for reinforced concrete (RC) frame with unreinforced masonry (URM) infill is proposed in a practical form, based on the previous studies. The backbone curve for RC boundary frame was modeled by a tri-linear envelope with cracking and yielding points. On the other hand, that of URM infill was modeled by representative characteristic points of cracking, maximum, and residual strength; also, the interaction effect between RC boundary frame and the infill was taken into account. The overall force-displacement envelopes by the sum of RC boundary frame and URM infill, where the backbone curves of the infill from other studies were also considered, were then compared with the previous experimental results. The simplified estimation results from this study were found to almost approximate the overall experimental results with conservative evaluations, and they showed much better agreement than the cases employing the infill envelopes from other studies.

  • Concrete is one of the principal materials for the structure and it is widely used all over the world, but it shows extremely brittle failure under bending and tensile load. Recently to improve such a poor property, Ductile Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composites (DFRCC) have been developed, and it are defined by an ultimate strength higher than their first cracking strength and the formation of multiple cracking during the inelastic deformation process. This paper is to estimate experimentally the mechanical properties of ductile concrete with the kinds of used fine and coarse aggregate for purpose of development of high ductile concrete mixing coarse aggregate. As the results, ductile concrete mixed coarse aggregate showed the displacement-hardening behavior under bending load similar to DFRCC, and its compressive and bending performance varied according to the kinds of used coarse aggregate.

  • This study explores the use of advanced concrete types to improve the performance of composite steel shear walls (CSPSWs), particularly in delaying cracking and failure. A two-phase approach is implemented. Phase I utilizes non-linear finite element analysis and Gene Expression Programming to develop a novel method for determining the minimum concrete thickness required in CSPSWs. Phase II investigates the effect of concrete type, opening area, and location on the behavior of CSPSWs with openings. The results demonstrate that ultra-high performance concrete (UHPFRC) significantly reduces out-of-plane displacement and tensile cracking compared to normal concrete. Additionally, the study reveals a strong correlation between opening position and load-bearing capacity, with position L3 exhibiting the greatest reduction as opening size increases. Finally, UHPFRC's superior energy dissipation translatesto a higher equivalent viscous damping coefficient.

  • Building hardware joints are welded in most cases, which have risks of fire and explosion. Besides, the secondary damage of the destruction of the welded parts can be caused by the horizontal displacement of the structure due to earthquake or wind load. This paper compared the horizontal displacement following abilities of welded building hardware and non-welded building hardware. To do this, We conducted actual formation shake table test, and checked on the horizontal displacement following ability of structure by comparing their responses to earthquake load. We made the 2m-high framework to examine the responses of the actually constructed building hardwares, and analyzed the displacement responses of the welded-typed, non-welded-typed, and cruciform bracket building hardwares. We conducted the test by increasing acceleration rate until displacement reached 40mm corresponding to allowable relative story displacement II. The result of the test showed that the building hardware using welding work made cracking and breakage on welded connections of welded building hardware, but non-welded building hardware with no use of welding work and cruciform bracket building hardware make no problem, and that non-welded building hardware is superior to that of the welded building hardware in the horizontal displacement following ability due to earthquake or wind load.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate performance of asphalt concretes under various densities, using Marshall specimens before and after freezing-and-thawing treatment. Six different compaction blows per side (20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 blows) were applied to specimens to produce different densities. Test results showed that the lower density specimens had the weaker resistance to freezing-and-thawing treatment. The density was an index of retaining fatigue life and displacement after freezing-and-thawing. Therefore, poor compaction in pavement was considered to be a major cause of early distress mechanisms such as rutting, ravelling and cracking, which were resulted in a reduced service life.

  • A two dimensional elasto-plastic finite element program taking into account contact between crack surfaces if developed in order to analyze subsurface cracking in rolling contact. But the friction between upper and lower surface of the crack is not considered. Under the assumptions of small deformation and small displacement, the incremental theory of plasticity is used to describe plastic deformation. J-integral is computed as the applied Hertzian load slides over the surface with friction. J-integral is correlated with wear rate of the rail. The propagation rate of the right tip of the surface crack is fast by 45% than that of the left side.

  • Latex modification of concrete provides the material with higher flexural strength. This increase in flexural strength can attribute to the crack-arresting action of polymer in concrete, and also to the bonding they provide between the matrix and aggregates. This experimental study presents the fracture behavior of 12 flexural reinforced concrete beams repaired or strengthened by latex-modified concrete with the main experimental variables such as overlay thickness, strength thickness, and shear reinforcement. The results are as follow: All beam specimens having shear reinforcement were failed by delamination rupture at concrete interface at about 80% of ultimate loading after flexural cracking. All specimens overlayed and strengthened by latex-modified concrete (LMC) showed higher ultimate flexural strength than OPC control specimen, but lower than LMC control specimen. This increase in flexural strength could attribute to the high bonding they provide between the matrix and aggregates. All specimens except two shear unreinforced showed quite similar and consistent displacement behavior. The effect of overlay and strength thickness on the load-displacement relationship were a small at this study.

  • Surface damage accumulation of alumina ceramics under the cyclic stress state was analyzed. The alternating stress state in repeat pass sliding contact was simulated by a synchronized biaxial (normal and tangential) repeated indentation technique. Wear debris formation mechanism through damage accumulation and fatigue grain failure in both alumina ceramic balls and flat disks was confirmed, and the contact induced surface degradation due to fatigue cracking accumulation was quantified by measuring vertical contact displacement. Variation of structural compliance (slope of load-displacement curve) of two contacting bodies was expressed as a variation of the apparent elastic property, called pseudo-elastic constant, of the contact system.

  • In this study, an application of crack morphology variables in the Leak-Before-Break(LBB) evaluation for nuclear piping systems is investigated, including influences on the leakage crack size and crack instability loads. The crack surface roughness and the number of flow turns as a function of the crack opening displacement are applied to LBB evaluations for KSNP pressurizer surge line, for which fatigue and stress corrosion cracking are considered as failure mechanisms. As a result, there would be a significant impact on safety margins to acceptance criteria for the surge line if crack morphology variables are applied additionally to the current regulatory guide without re-analyses for justification of safety factors being applied on the leakage crack size and piping loads for evaluations.

  • Reinforced concrete shear walls with deficient reinforcement details are tested under cyclic loading. The deficiency of reinforcement details includes insufficient splice length in U-stirrups at the ends of horizontal reinforcement and boundary column dowel bars found in existing low- to mid-rise Korean buildings designed non-seismically. Three test specimens have rectangular, babel and flanged sections, respectively. Flexure- and shear-controlled models for reinforced concrete shear walls specified in ASCE/SEI 41-13 are compared with the flexural and shear components of force-displacement relation extracted separately from the top displacement of the specimen based on the displacement data measured at diverse locations. Modification of the shear wall models in ASCE/SEI 41-13 is proposed in order to account for the effect of bar slip, cracking loads in flexure and shear. The proposed modification shows better approximation of the test results compared to the original models.
