  • The piezoelectric thin film sensor can be used to interpret variations in structural and material properties, e.g. for structural integrity monitoring and assessment. To illustrate one of this potential benefit, PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) film sensors are used for monitoring impact damage in Gr/Ep composite panels. Both PVDF film sensors and strain gages are attached to the surface of Gr/Ep specimens. A series of impact tests at various impact energy by changing impact mass the height are performed on the instrumented drop weight impact tester. The sensor responses are carefully examined to predict the onset of impact damage such as indentation, matrix cracking, and delamination, etc. Test results show that the particular waveforms of sensor signals implying the damage initiation and development are detected above the damage initiation impact energy. As expected, the PVDF film sensor is found to be more sensitive to impact damage initiation event than the strain gage.

  • The damage zone around a crack tip occurring before the fracture is a significant domain. which affects the toughening mechanism of materials. In this study. the growth process of damage zone in the vicinity of crack tip for rubber-modified epoxy resin is investigated using an acoustic emission(AE) analysis. The weight fractions of rubber(CTBN 1300$\times$B) in rubber-modified epoxy resin are 5 wt% and 15 wt%. The fracture toughness($K_{IC}$) and the fracture energy($G_{IC}$) were measured using 3 point bending single-edge notched specimens. The damage zone and rubber particles distributed around the crack tip were observed by a polarized optical microscope and an atomic force microscope(AFM). The damage zone around crack tip of rubber-modified epoxy resin was formed at 13 % loading and developed until 57 % loading of the fracture load. The crack initiated at 57 % loading grew repeatedly in the stick-slip propagation behavior. Based on time-frequency analysis, it was confirmed that AE signals with frequency bands of 0.15~0.20 MHz and 0.20~0.30 MHz were generated from cavitation and stable/unstable cracking inside the damage zone.

  • The inherent characteristic of concrete tensile cracks, directional nonlocal crack damage, causes so-called rotating tensile crack damage and softening of compressive strength. In the present study, a plasticity model was developed to describe the behavior of reinforced concrete planar members In tension-compression. To describe the effect of directional nonlocal crack damage, the concept of microplane model was combined with the plasticity model. Unlike existing models, in the proposed model, softening of compressive strength as well as the tensile crack damage were defined by the directional nonlocal crack damage. Once a tensile cracking occurs, the microplanes of concrete are affected by the nonlocal crack damage. In the microplanes, microscopic tension and compression failure surfaces are calculated. By integrating the microscopic failure surfaces, the macroscopic failure surface is calculated. The proposed model was implemented to finite element analysis, and it was verified by comparisons with the results of existing shear panel tests.

  • Owing to the high specific strength and stiffness of composite materials, they are extensively used in mechanical systems and in vehicle industries. However, most mechanical structures experience repeated load and fatigue. Therefore, it is important to perform fatigue analysis of fiber-reinforced composites. The properties of composite laminates vary depending upon the stacking sequence and stacking direction. Fatigue damage of composite laminates occurs according to the following sequence: matrix cracking, delamination, and fiber breakage. In this study, fatigue tests were performed for damage analysis. Fatigue damages, which have to be considered in fatigue analysis, are determined by using the stiffness values calculated from hysteresis loops, and the obtained fatigue damage curve is examined using Mao's equation and Abdelal's equation.

  • Damage induced by low velocity impact loading in aircraft composite laminates is the form of failure which is occurred frequently in aircraft. Low velocity impact can be caused either by maintenance accidents with tool drops or by in-flight impacts with debris. As the consequences of impact loading in composite laminates, matrix cracking, delamination and eventually fiber breakage for higher impact energies can be occurred. Even when no visible impact damage is observed, damage can exist inside of composite laminates and the carrying load of the composite laminates is considerably reduced. The reduction of strength and stiffness by impact loading occurs in compressive loading due to laminate buckling in the delaminated areas. The objective of this study is to determine inside damage of composite laminates by impact loading and to determine residual compressive strength and the damage growth mechanisms of impacted composite laminates. For this purpose a series of impact and compression after impact tests are carried out on composite laminates made of carbon fiber reinforced epoxy resin matrix with lay up pattern of $[({\pm}45)(0/90)_2]s$ and $[({\pm}45)(0)_3(90)(0)_3({\pm}45)]$. UT-C scan is used to determine impact damage characteristics and CAI(Compression After Impact) tests are carried out to evaluate quantitatively reduction of compressive strength by impact loading.

  • A nonlinear FEM analysis of steel members under very-low-cycle loading has been performed in conjunction with experimental works. This analysis is an FEM tracing toward cracking of steel members under cyclic loads such as a strong earthquake. After verifying the procedure by comparing global hysteretic behaviors from the analytical and experimental results, the local stress-strain hysteresis at critical sections for large cyclic deformations was traced by the numerical analysis. Local strain history was discussed in relation to cracking. Based on the experimental and analytical results, a new approach to seismic safety assessment for steel members was proposed in this paper.

  • The consequence analysis for the unconfined vapor cloud explosion(UVCE) accident by the continuous release of butane vapor was performed and effects of process parameters on consequences were analyzed in standard conditions. For the case of continuous release(87.8 kg/s) of butane vapor at 8 m elevated height in the debutanizing process of tile naphtha cracking plant operating at 877 kPa & 346.75 K, we found that combustion ranges of dispersed vapor estimated by HMP model were 11.2~120.2 m and overpressures estimated by TNT equivalency model at 200 m were about 37.35~55.1 kPa. Also, overpressures estimated by Model UVCE I based on advective travel time to $X_{LFL}$ were smaller than those estimated by Model UVCE IIbased on real travel time between $X_{UFL}$ and $X_{LFL}$. At the same time, damage intensities at 200 m and effect ranges by overpressure could be predicted. Furthermore, simulation results showed that effects of operating pressures on consequences were larger than those of operating temperatures and results of accidents were increased with increasing operating pressures. At this time, sensitivities of overpressures for UVCE accident by the continuous release were about 5 kPa/atm.

  • It is impossible to database(DB) the patterns of power cable events and cause analysis of faulted cable because the product liability(PL) law have been enforced in Korea, since 2002. In additions, simulation and pattern of power cable events are needed for DB system under accelerated deterioration. In this paper, we tested for resistance to cracking of cable below the 22.9kV class due to thermal stresses. This method of exam is following IEC 60811-3-1(Common test methods for insulating and sheathing materials of electric cables). From the results, The 22.9kV calss A power cable was discolored on the surface and significantly reduced in the longitudinal direction. As the thermal weight properties of A power cable was definitely varied, we are able to guess the problem of manufacture. If the cable was defect by the manufacture, the victims would be able to claim for damage in the PL system.

  • Railway vehicle battery is supplying the power required for the initial start-up of the train, in the event of a fault in the vehicle, or catenary for supplying emergency power is one of the components are very important. Currently, the railway vehicles such as nickel-cadmium batteries are being used [1,2]. Ni-Cd batteries as a battery installed in the railway vehicles have a strong corrosion resistance is included, The charge-discharge performance is significantly degraded in cold weather, there is a danger of deterioration or explosion. Train accidents have been caused a lot of damage due to rapid deterioration and cracking of the battery and memory due to the effect of Ni-Cd batteries. In order to solve the problems, There is no risk of degradation, deterioration and leakage, cracking and exploding. maintenance is simple and applied measures proposed to apply Lithium Polymer battery of high performance. In addition, the lack of capacity problems identified by testing the different special systems is replaced by a 70Ah lithium-polymer battery is possible without changing the batteries of 50Ah caused by installing additional equipment in existing older trains were applied to the vehicle.
