  • The damage in concrete structures generally starts with microcracking and thus it is important to find and explore these microcracks in concrete in order to ensure appropriate safety and serviceability. The purpose of the present study is to identify the damage characteristics of concrete structures due to cracking by employing the acoustic emission techniques. A comprehensive experimental study has been done. The cracking damage under tensile and flexural loadings have been identified and the bond damage between steel and concrete have been also characterized. It is seen that the amplitudes and energy level of Acoustic Emission(AE) events are found to be relatively small for bond cracking damages and large for tensile cracking damages. The characteristic equations of the AE events for various cracking damages have been proposed based on the present test data. The internal microcracks are progressively developed ahead of a visible actual crack and the present study clearly exhibits these damage mechanism for various types of cracking in concrete. The present study provides useful data which can be used to identify the various types of cracking damages in concrete structures. This will allow efficient maintenance of concrete structures through monitoring of internal cracking based on acoustic emission.

  • In particle or short-fiber reinforced composites. cracking of the reinforcements is a significant damage mode because the broken reinforcements lose load carrying capacity. This paper deals with the load carrying capacity of intact and broken ellipsoidal inhomogeneities embedded in an infinite body and a damage theory of particle or short-fiber reinforce composites. The average stress in the inhomogeneity represents its load carrying capacity. and the difference between the average stresses of the intact t and broken inhomogeneities indicates the loss of load carrying capacity due to cracking damage. • In particle or short-fiber reinforced composites, cracking of the reinforcements is a significant damage mode because the cracked reinforcements lose load carrying capacity. This paper deals with an incremental damage theory of particle or short-fiber reinforced composites. The composite undergoing damage process contains intact and broken reinforcements in a matrix. To describe the load carrying capacity of cracked reinforcement, the average stress of cracked ellipsoidal inhomogeneity in an infinite body as proposed in the previous paper is introduced. An incremental constitutive relation on particle or short-fiber reinforced composites including progressive cracking of the reinforcements is developed based on Eshelby's (1957) equivalent inclusion method and Mori and Tanaka\`s (1973) mean field concept. Influence of the cracking damage on the stress-strain response of composites is demonstrated.

  • An investigation was performed to study the impact damage in CFRP laminated composites subjected to impact loading. A finite element model has been developed for predicting the impact damage in laminated composite plates resulting from the ballistic impact. The finite element model was based on the higher-order shear deformation theory and was used to predict the initial intraply matrix cracking and the shape and size of interface delamination in laminated composites. Numerical simulation was performed and then the initiation of the matrix cracking and the shape and size of impacted induced delamination were predicted, and te results were compared with those of impact experiments with the same dimension and stacking sequences. A linear relationship holds between impact velocity and length and width of delamination. As impact velocity is increased, the increase of delamination length is highger than the increase of delamination width.

  • Components manufactured from composite materials are frequently subjected to superimposed mechanical and thermal loadings during their operating service. Both types of loadings may cause fracture and failure of composite structures. When composite cross-ply laminates of type [$0_m/90_n]_s$ are subjected to uni-axial tensile loading, different types of damage are set-up and developed such as matrix cracking: transverse and longitudinal cracks, delamination between disoriented layers and broken fibers. The development of these modes of damage can be detrimental for the stiffness of the laminates. From the experimental point of view, transverse cracking is known as the first mode of damage. In this regard, the objective of the present paper is to investigate the effect of transverse cracking in cross-ply laminate under thermo-mechanical degradation. A Finite Element (FE) simulation of damage evolution in composite crossply laminates of type [$0_m/90_n]_s$ subjected to uni-axial tensile loading is carried out. The effect of transverse cracking on the cross-ply laminate strength under thermo-mechanical degradation is investigated numerically. The results obtained by prediction of the numerical model developed in this investigation demonstrate the influence of the transverse cracking on the bearing capacity and resistance to damage as well as its effects on the variation of the mechanical properties such as Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio and coefficient of thermal expansion. The results obtained are in good agreement with those predicted by the Shear-lag analytical model as well as with the obtained experimental results available in the literature.

  • This paper proposes a numerically-based methodology to implicitly model irreversible deformations in concrete through a damage model. Plasticity theory is not explicitly employed, although resemblances are still present. A scalar isotropic damage model is adopted and the damage variable is split in two: one contributing for stiffness degradation (cracking) and other contributing for irreversible deformations (plasticity). The proposed methodology is thermodynamically consistent as it consists in a damage model rewritten in different terms. Its Finite Element coding is presented, indicating that minor changes are necessary. It is also demonstrated that nonlinear algorithms are unnecessary to model concrete cracking and plasticity. Experimental data from direct tension and four-point bending tests under cyclic loading are compared to the proposed methodology. A numerical case study of a low-cycle fatigue is also presented. It can be concluded that the model is simple, feasible and capable to capture the essentials concerning cracking and plasticity.

  • The paper deals with the damage assessment of the concrete beam using static displacements and the flexural stiffness reduction of the beam was evaluated. Simply supported concrete beams were loaded at the mid-span, and the applied load level ranged $20\%,\;40\%,\;80\%$ of the flexural strength of the beam. When the displacements from the tests were increased more than $10\%$ of the initial values, flexural cracks occured. Judging from the observed cracks, damaged area of the beams were assumed and the stiffness reduction using the smeared-cracking concept was estimated to minimize the error between the test results and analytical results. Four stages of the behavior of a RC beam, which are uncracked, initial cracking, stabilized cracking and post-yielding, can be considered to assess the damage of RC beams. Main parameters for the assessment were cracking area and the stiffness reduction ratio. In each stage, damaged elements and their stiffness reduction were estimated to minimized the error.
