  • Displacements near crack and stress intensity factor (SIF) are key parameters to solve rock failure issue when using fracture mechanics. In order to study the horizontal displacement and stress intensity factor of the mode I fracture, a series of three-point bending tests of granite specimens with central notch were carried out. The evolution of horizontal displacements of precast notch and crack tip opening displacements (CTOD) were analyzed based on the digital image correlation (DIC) method. Stress intensity factors for three-point bending beams with arbitrary span-to-width ratios(S/W) were calculated by using the WU-Carlsson analytical weight function for edge-crack finite width plate and the analytical solution of un-cracked stress by Filon. The present study provides a high efficient and accurate method for fracture mechanics analysis of the three-point bending granite beams.

  • In this study, scaled model tests were performed to investigate the stability of twin tunnels with small clearance, where the pillar widths were 0.5D and 0.25D, respectively. The tunnels were supposed to be constructed in anisotropic weathered rocks with $30^{\circ}$ inclined bedding planes, and the model tests were conducted under the condition of lateral pressure ratio, 1. Six types of test models which had respectively different pillar widths and support conditions were experimented, where crack initiating pressures, maximum pressures, failure modes of pillar and deformation behaviors around tunnels were investigated. The models with wider pillar were cracked under higher pressure than the models with shallower pillar. The models with lining support were cracked under higher pressure and showed less tunnel convergence than the unsupported models. The models with both lining and pillar reinforcement were proved to be most stable among the tested models. In particular, as the model of 0.25D pillar width with only lining support showed shear failure of pillar according to the existing bedding planes, so both lining and pillar reinforcement were thought to be indispensable in that case of tunnel.

  • In this study, scaled model tests were performed to investigate the stability of twin tunnels constructed in anisotropic rocks with $30^{\circ}$ inclined bedding planes under the condition of lateral pressure ratio, 2. Five types of test models which had respectively different pillar widths and shapes of tunnel sections were experimented, where both crack initiating pressures and deformation behaviors around tunnels were investigated. The models with shallower pillar width showed shear failure of pillar according to the existing bedding planes and they were cracked under lower pressure than the models with thicker pillar width. In order to find the effect of tunnel sectional shape on stability, the models with four centered arch section, circular section and semi-circular arch section were experimented. As results of the comparison of the crack initiating pressures and the deformation behaviors around tunnels, the semi-circular arched tunnel model was the most unstable whereas the circular tunnel model was the most stable among them. Furthermore, the results of FLAC analysis were qualitatively coincident with the experimental results.

  • The Jincheonsagongnimaaeyeoraeipsang is a great stone relief Buddha in Goryeo Dynasty, transmitting sculptural styles of the Silla Kingdom. The Buddha was carved on the biotite granite basement, and was undergone cleaning treatment in 2007. The basement rock was opened in plenty cracks bringing out structural instability. And the top of the basement rock was colonized by trees obstructing sunshine and raising humidity. As a result of failure analysis, the basement rock of the Buddha had a major possibility of wedge failure in the parts of the face, hands and cloths. Therefore, the cracks were filled up with epoxy resin L-50, and titanium bars and wire ropes were applied to bind cracked rock blocks. The surface of the crack filler was colored by granite and talc powder with inorganic pigment and L-30. The crack meters were installed on the stone relief Buddha to monitor further behavior, lastly.

  • Three points bending flexural test was modeled numerically to study the crack propagation in the pre-cracked beams. The pre-existing edge cracks in the beam models were considered to investigate the crack propagation and coalescence paths within the modeled samples. The effects of particle size on the single edge-notched round bar in bending test were considered too. The results show that Failure pattern is constant by increasing the ball diameter. Tensile cracks are dominant mode of failure. These crack initiates from notch tip, propagate parallel to loading axis and coalescence with upper model boundary. Number of cracks increase by decreasing the ball diameter. Also, tensile fracture toughness was decreased with increasing the particle size. In the present study, the influences of particles sizes on the cracks propagations and coalescences in the brittle materials such as rocks and concretes are numerically analyzed by using a three dimensional particle flow code (PFC3D). These analyses improve the understanding of the stability of rocks and concretes structures such as rock slopes, tunnel constructions and underground openings.

  • CFRD (Concrete Faced Rockfill Dam) has been world-widely constructed due to a lot of advantages compared with rockfill dam and recently, sand/gravel materials, instead of crushed rock materials, are also utilized as a main rockfill material to overcome geological and environmental problems. In this paper, the process of water infiltration into the originally unsaturated sand/gravel-fill dam is studied using two-dimensional saturated-unsaturated seepage theory. According to the results of seepage analysis, if the effective drainage zone is installed in the dam, the reservoir water infiltrate into the dam along a downward flow path towards the lower drainage area. The main body constructed with sand/gravel materials, therefore, remains unsaturated.

  • This study analyzed the cases of cracks in piles due to the use of followers under construction conditions where water exists inside the piles, and confirmed whether the piles were cracked through a field test simulating the construction conditions in which water pressure inside the piles was generated by a hammer. According to the construction case, under the construction condition where the pile length is 20% to 30% shorter than the drilled length, about 80% cracks occur, so there is a high possibility of cracking due to water inside the pile. A field test was conducted to confirm the type of pile failure due to hammer under the construction condition in which water exists inside the pile. The pile head was not destroyed by the compressive load, and one or more longitudinal cracks occurred along the PC steel wire. The closed end pile generates water pressure by hammer. the follower and cushion(compression plywood) must be drilled at least 0.4D. It is expected that improved quality control will be possible as the water pressure inside the pile is reduced.

  • An unstable natural slope located at Icheon-Ri, Dasa-Eup, Dalseong-Kun which has been severely cracked during heavy rain fall in September, 1998, was investigated and analysed for remedial measures. Various geological data were obtained by performing a surface geological survey, a ground penetrating radar(GPR) exploration, four geotechnical borings with field and laboratory tests, and the precipitation records were also reviewed. Based on the these data, the probable sliding plane was determined as a bedding plane with dip angle of 20 to 25 degrees between sandstone and shale layers at depth of 6 to 8 meters. By performing back analyses with the limit equilibrium method, the friction angle and cohesion of the sliding plane were determined as 18$^{\circ}$ and 0, respectively. Based on these results, a series of stability analyses such as stereo-graphic projection method, limiting equilibrium method and numerical method were carried out. The remedial measures for the unstable slope were selected based on the results of the limit equilibrium analyses by considering various conditions expected at the site. Ground grouting or anchoring method with proper surface drainage systems could be employed for the long term safety of the slope.

  • On the basis of extensive field investigation and a series of herbarium specimen identifications, we present and discuss the descriptions and distribution of 22 species of Ramalina found in the Hengduan Mountains of southwestern China. In this revisionary study, representatives of the Ramalina genus, including R. americana, R. confirmata, R. dendriscoides, R. obtusata, R. pacifica, R. pentecostii, R. peruviana, R. shinanoana, and R. subcomplanata are found for the first time in this area. In addition, R. holstii is reported for the first time China. Finally, a newly described species identified as Ramalina hengduanshanensis S. O. Oh & L. S. Wang is reported. It is characterized as growing from a narrow holdfast, solid, sparsely or richly and irregularly dichotomously branched, palmate and flattened lobes with distinctly dorsiventral appearance, surface rugose to reticulate, surface rugosely cracked, dense chondroid tissue, helmet shaped soralia at the tip. The species grows on rock and tree at the highest elevations in this area. Although very few lichen species belonging to the genus Ramalina have been collected above 4,000 m, this new species is found at this elevation. We present detailed morphological, anatomical, and chemical descriptions of this species along with molecular phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer rDNA sequences.
