  • This study developed a shear strength prediction model of FRP strengthened reinforced concrete beams in shear. The primary design parameters were shear crack angle and shear span to depth ratio of FRP reinforcement. Of primary concern In the suggested model was the FRP debonding failure, which Is a typical fracture mode of RC beams strengthened with FRP, The proposed model used a crack sliding model based on modified plasticity theory. To address the effect of the shear span to depth ratio, the arch action was considered in the proposed model. The proposed model was applied to RC beams strengthened with FRP. The results showed that the proposed model agree with test results.

  • This paper deals with the crack propagation life assessment of T-joint welded structure where typical fatigue cracks have been frequently initiated when the marine vessels experience the storm load. Welding residual stresses are calculated to investigate its effects on the fatigue life. Thereafter the residual stress distribution was applied to the AFGROW life prediction program, which incorporated the loading, the welding residual stress, and the geometric shape of the structure. The fatigue tests of the T-joint welded specimen under storm loading show the beach mark clearly generated on the fractured section of the weldment. The crack propagation life estimated based on the beach mark is compared with that of AFGROW to validate the life prediction. Based on the results, the evaluation method of the remaining fatigue life for T-joint fillet weldment of marine vessel's cargo hold with random load or storm load was established.

  • The crack initiation life evaluation which is the most commonly used approach in fatigue strength studies for the designers, is performed for the crankshaft of mid-size engine. In order to evaluate the fatigue strength, structural analysis model and applied loads on crankshaft are prepared based on the cyclic system. Using the response data of the finite element analysis, crack initiation life is predicted and plotted on crankshaft geometric model. In this analysis, general purpose programs such as PATRAN, NASTRAN and EMRC/NISA are actively utilized. Life distribution contour plots, which is not yet established as an active tool in actual design system of ship structure & components, are suggested and examples for active predicting procedure such as stress contour plotting in structure strength analysis, are illustrated. Additionally, several correlated equations for prediction of the crack initiation life are introduced and discussed to improve the fatigue strength prediction of crankshaft.

  • A comprehensive framework for numerical simulation of time-dependent performance change of reinforced concrete (RC) structures subjected to chloride attack is presented in this paper. The system is composed of simplified computational models for transport of moisture and chloride ions in concrete pore structure and crack, corrosion of reinforcement in concrete and mechanical behavior of RC member with reinforcement corrosion. Service-life of RC structures under various conditions is calculated.

  • Based on the idea of eigen-mode expansion, a method to analyze the reflection of Lamb wave from a finite vertical discontinuity of plate is theoretically derived and verified by experiment. The theoretical prediction is in good agreement with the experimental result, and this strongly suggests that eigen-mode expansion method could be used for solution of inverse scattering problem for ultrasonic testing using Lamb wave.

  • A refined two-dimensional analysis method, taking into account the crack opening deformation, is proposed for the evaluation of stress distributions in transverse cracked cross-ply laminates. The interlaminar stresses which play an important role in laminate failure are evaluated using the concept of interface layer. A series expansion of the displacements is employed and the thermal residual stresses and Poisson's effects in the laminated are taken into consideration in the formulation. The stress distributions are compared with finite element results. The proposed method represents well the characteristics of the stress distributions. The through-the-thickness variation of the stress distribution is remarkable near the transverse crack due to the crack opening deformation. The interlaminar stresses have significant values at the transverse crack tip and the proposed analysis can be applied as a basis for the prediction of the induced delamination onset by using appropriate failure criteria.

  • Deterioration is accelerated due to additional intrusion of chloride ion in crack width in cracked concrete. In this paper, modeling on equivalent diffusion coefficient in cracked concrete is performed for 1-D (Anisotropic) and 2-D (Isotropic) diffusion based on steady state condition. In the previous research, rectangular shape of crack was considered but the shape was modified to wedge shape with torturity. For verification of the proposed model, crack is induced in concrete sample and migration test in steady state is performed for 1-D diffusion. For 2-D diffusion, previous test results are adopted for verification. Through considering wedge shape of crack with torturity, diffusion coefficients in 1-D and 2-D diffusion are reduced, and the more reasonable prediction is obtained. The results from the proposed model with torturity of 0.10~0.15 are shown to be in the best agreement with the test results.

  • With the increasing number of aging buildings across Korea, emerging maintenance technologies have surged. One such technology is the non-contact detection of concrete cracks via thermal images. This study aims to develop a technique that can accurately predict the depth of a crack by analyzing the temperature difference between the crack part and the normal part in the thermal image of the concrete. The research obtained temperature data through thermal imaging experiments and constructed a big data set including outdoor variables such as air temperature, illumination, and humidity that can influence temperature differences. Based on the collected data, the team designed an algorithm for learning and predicting the crack depth using machine learning. Initially, standardized crack specimens were used in experiments, and the big data was updated by specimens similar to actual cracks. Finally, a crack depth prediction technology was implemented using five regression analysis algorithms for approximately 24,000 data points. To confirm the practicality of the development technique, crack simulators with various shapes were added to the study.

  • In this study, using high cycle fatigue (HCF) criteria, the simulation of rolling contact fatigue is conducted under elliptical contact. The HCF criteria fall into three categories: the critical plane approach, the stress invariant approach and the approach based on the mesoscopic scale. The accurate calculation of contact stresses and subsurface stresses is essential to the prediction of crack initiation life. Contact stresses are obtained by contact analysis of a semi-infinite solid based on the use of influence functions and the subsurface stress field is obtained using rectangular patch solutions. The simulation results show that the critical load is decreasing rapidly and the site of crack initiation also moves rapidly to the surface from the subsurface when the friction coefficient exceeds a specific value for all of three fatigue criteria.

  • Fasteners are used to join the various electronic products and machines. So, the quality and reliability of the fastener are strongly requested. In this study, the analyses of the multi-stage cold forging of TORX screws for storage parts are carried out. In manufacturing of TORX screws, crack and folding defects are observed. Therefore, the analysis is focused on the prediction of the defects. Based on the analysis results, the upper die and process conditions are redesigned to reduce the defects. The upper die shape for preform forming is redesigned to prevent folding and sharp shape change. The Cockroft-Latham damage criterion is introduced to predict the crack initiation. Analysis results shows that the maximum Cockroft-Latham damage value is decreased by 40% in the forming using the modified upper die.
