  • The problem of welding stresses and fatigue behavior is the main concerns of welding research fields. The residual stresses and distortion of structures by welding is exert negative effect on the safety of mechanical structures. That is, expansion of material by high temperature and distortion by cooling during welding process is caused of tensile and compressive residual stresses on welding material, and this residual stresses reduce fracture and fatigue strength of welding structures. The accurate prediction of residual stress and redistribution due to fatigue crack propagation of weld zone is very important to improve the quality of weldment. In this study, a finite element modeling technique is developed to simulate the redistribution of residual stresses due to fatigue crack propagation of weld zone.

  • The energy-based approach to predict the fatigue crack growth behavior under constant and variable amplitude loading (VAL) of the aluminum alloy 2024 T351 has been investigated and detailed analyses discussed. Firstly, the plastic strain energy was determined per cycle for different block load tests. The relationship between the crack advance and hysteretic energy dissipated per block can be represented by a power law. Then, an analytical model to estimate the lifetime for each spectrum is proposed. The results obtained are compared with the experimentally measured results and the models proposed by Klingbeil's model and Tracey's model. The evolution of the hysteretic energy dissipated per block is shown similar with that observed under constant amplitude loading.

  • Concrete beams reinforced with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) bars exhibit large deflection and crack width as compared to concrete beams reinforced steel due to modulus of elasticity of FRP bars. Current design code for prediction and crack width developed in concrete structures reinforced with steel bars may not be used for concrete beams reinforced with FRP bars. Thus a number of researcher have attempted to propose modifications to the ACI 318 empirical equation for estimating the effective moment of inertia of reinforced concrete beams. Others used numerical method to calculate the deflection. The purpose of this paper is to evaluation of methods of ACI 440.1 R-01, ISIS Canada design manual, and others for predicting deflection for glass fiber reinforced polymer reinforced concrete beams.

  • A simulation program concerned with multi-surface fatigue cracks which initiated at the semi-circular surface notches has been developed to predict their growth and coalescence behaviors at the elevated temperature. Three kinds of coalescence models such as SPC(surface point connection), ASME and BSI(British Standards Institution) conditions were applied, and the results of the simulation were compared with those of the experiment. This simulation is able to enhance the reliance and integrity of structures especially under the elevated temperature which have lots of difficulties in experiments and applications. This shows that the simulation result has utility for fatigue life prediction. Even though all the specimens were the same shape, the error rate was increased in accordance with the applied stress to the specimen. Among the material constants C and m in the narrow band, the results applied upper values of the band to the simulation has shown quite small error compared with the experiment results.

  • This study is to apply the theory of fatigue fracture to solder joints under thermal cyclic loading and predict life of solder joint to failure. A 62Sn-36Pb-2Ag solder was used in this study. Tensile tests were preformed at temperatures of 15.dec. C, 50.dec. C and 85.dec. C in order to find terms of crack length "a". plastic strain range ""${\Delta}{\varepsilon}_p$" and temperature "T". Solder joint under thermal cyclic loading was analyzed by FEM. this FEM analysis together with the crack growth rate will provide the capability of the fatigue life prediction of solder joints and enhance the reliability od solder joint.

  • Prediction of fatigue duration is attainable from the analysis of the growth rate of the fatigue crack, and the property of the fatigue crack growth is determined by the calculation of the stress intensity factor. And the evaluation of the stress intensity factor, K comes from the stress analysis of the vicinity of crack tip of the continuum. This study describes a simple method to decide the stress intensity factor for the small crack at the sharp edge notches. The proposed method is based on the similarities between elastic stress fields of the notch tip described by two parameters, the stress concentration factor K, the radius of arc of the notch. And it is applicable to the analysis of the semi-elliptical penetration cracks and the edge notches.

  • In this study a model for the constitutive relation of a plane concrete is proposed using a micromechariical model. In this model a precursor crack is assumed to exist in the aggregate-cement paste interface, and the LEFM is used to predict the nucleation of the bond cracks and the grow th of mortar cracks. For computational convenience the bond crack-mortar crack configuration is transformed into a straight crack with a point force in the middle. 'The overall compliance and the cons, titutive relation are predicted from the damage due to microcracks, and the predicted stress-strain curves are compared with some experimental data. According to the results, the model predictions are better for under tensile loading than under compression, for high, strength concrete than for normal strength concrete.

  • This study was performed to verify the effect of axial force due to restraint on the mechanical behavior and the average crack spacing of the reinforced concrett. ilexural menlbers. For. this purpose, the flexural sttvngt.h and rigidity werc experimentally investigated undcl. axially rcstmined and unr.est.rainrd conditions. Furthermore , the average crack spacing was also checkcd for the axilly restrained contlit.ion. Thc test results showd that the flexual strength and rigidity of t,he restrained beam were higher. than those of the unrestrained beam. The major. factors affecting on the average crack spacing were steeel stress, axial force, cicumference of reinforcing bar and effective tension arm of concrete. However. the concrete compressive strength was minor effect. Including thesc factors, a prediction equation for the average crack spacing of the restrained member was proposed.
