  • An experimental investigation of the fatigue through crack growth behavior under simple stepped variable loading condition has been performed using Al7075-T651. Experiments were carried out by using cantilever bending type specimens, with chevron notches on a small electro-magnetic test machine. Tensile overloads have a retarding effect on the fatigue crack growth rates, therefore tensile overloads were used for the beneficial effect on the fatigue life. While in most cases compressive overloads have only a vanishing effect on crack growth rates, some experiments with single edge crack tension specimens reveal a marked growth retardation. The stress ratios used in this investigations varies from R=0.32 to 0.81, from R=0.04 to 0.76, from R=-0.15 to 0.73, and from R=-0.33 to 0.68 and the peak load for each case was not varied. The crack growth and crack closure were measured by Kikukawa's compliance method with a strain gauge mounted on the backside of each specimens. The results obtained are as follows. When the stepped variable load was applied, the smaller the stress ration was, the larger the delayed retardation of the crack growth rate was. The fatigue crack growh rate data obtained for through cracks were plotted well against the effective stress intensity factor range from 4.0 to 20.0MP{a^{SQRT}m}. It was found that the effective stress intensity factor range ratio was related well to the opening stress intensity factor, the maximum stress intensity factor, and crack length.

  • The effect of specimen thickness on fatigue crack growth behavior has been carried out by compact tension specimens of thickness of 3mm, 10mm and 25mm for maraging steel and Al 7075-T6. The closure points were determined during the test by means of a clip-gage situated at the notch mouth. Specimen thickness have no apparent influence on the fatigue crack growth rate of maraging steel, but the crack growth rate of 25mm thickness specimen for Al 7075-T6 is faster than that of 3 and 10mm specimens. The difference of crack growth rates can be successfully explained by considering the different stress state of plane strain and plain stress due to the variation of specimen thickness. Also the crack opening ratio of 25mm specimen is greater than those of 3 and 10mm specimens. When a side groove is introduced in a 10mm specimen, the crack growth rate is approximately similar to that of 25mm specimen. The effective thickness expression of $B_e=B_o-(B_o-B_N)^2B_o$ is the most appropriate to evaluate the crack growth rate of side-grooved specimen. Fatigue crack growth rates can be well described by $\Delta K_{eff}$ of the crack closure points in regardless of all thickness and side-grooved specimens.

  • Corrosion fatigue tests were carried out to clarify the influence of acid fog as environmental factor on the fatigue strength of SM55C using rotary bending fatigue tester. The fatigue strength of acid fog specimen extremely decreased about 80% compared to that of distilled water specimen. In acid fog environment, a number of cracks commenced at corrosion pit and coalesced with the adjacent cracks during they propagate, and they formed a single non-propagating circumferential crack under the endurance stress of N=5$\times$10$\^$7/ cycles. Also, the depth of the crack is smaller than that of normal fatigue crack, so the crack has a veil small aspect ratio. The reason of this peculiar crack growth characteristics is that the crack opening-closure behaviors are hindered by corrosion products on the surface crack faces, and hence it is thinkable that the strong corrosion action like anodic dissolution for crack growth in depth direction is weaker compared with surface, resulting from faint pumping action of crack during loading-shedding processes.

  • In this study, CT specimens were prepared from ASTM A516 Gr. 65 which was used for pressure vessel plates for moderate and lower temperature service. Fatigue crack growth test was carried out in the environment of low temperature of $10^{circ}C, -10^{circ}C, -30${circ}C\;and\;-50^{circ}C$ and in the range of stress ratio of R=0.05 and 0.3 by means of opening mode displacement. Based on these test results, the characteristics from temperature and stress ration were shown as follows. 1) As the stress ratio, R increased da/dN and ${Delta}K$ of 2nd stage gradually decreased. And as R decreased, the effect of temperature became greater and greater. 2) As the temperature descended, da/dN decreased on a certain ${Delta}K$, and ${Delta}K$ did in a same da/dN. And the stress ratio, R exerted greater influence at the lower temperature. 3) The fatigue crack growth constant, m increased at $10^{circ}C$ and $-10^{circ}C$, snd decreased at $-30^{circ}C$ and $-50^{circ}C$ following the increment of stress ratio R. And m increased along with the reduction of temperature greatly decreased at $-30^{circ}C$ to come close to two(2).

  • Rencentely, the request for the light weight is more incresed in the area of industrial environment and machinery and consistent effort is needed to accomplish high strength of material for the direction of light weight. we got the following characteristic from crack growth test carried out in the range of stress ration of 0.1, 0.3 and 0.6 by means of opening mode displacement. At the content stress ratio, the threshold stress intensity factor crack range ${\Delta}K_{th}$in the early stage of fatigue crack growth (Region I) and dtress intensity factor range ${\Delta}K$ in the stable of fatigue crack growth (Region II) with an increase in ${\Delta}K$. Fatigue life shows more improvement in the Shot-peened material than in the Un-peening material. And compressive residual stress of surface on the Shot peening processed operate resistance force of fatigue. So we can obtain fallowings. (1) The fatigue crack growth rate on stage II is conspicuous with the size of compressive residual stress and is depend on Paris equation. (2) Although the maxium compressive residual stress is deeply and widely formed from surface, fatigue life does not improve than when maxium compressive residual stress is formed in surface. (3) The threshold stress intensity factor range is increased with increasing compressive residual stress.

  • In this study, deep beam specimens are designed to have the effective shear span to depth ratio 1.0 and web opening within effective shear region. The purpose of this study is to investigate experimentally the shear strengthening effect between before failure and after failure upon using fiber sheets for RC deep beam with opening in web. The results can be summarized as follows; 1)When deep beams with web opening were failed in shear, their initial diagonal crack load and crack width were not influenced by their types of the arranged steel bars. 2)Deep beam with the horizontal reinforced bar was effective in the ultimate load of deep beam with web opening in shear failure 3)There were the approximate values between the experimental values and the analysis of finite element method. 4)The ultimate failure strengths of the repaired and strengthened specimens were increased about 34.4%~83.8% in comparison with specimens not to be strengthened.

  • The threshold fatigue crack growth and the stable crack propagation behaviors were studied in 7017 T 651, 7020 T 651 and 5083 H 115 aluminum alloys. The threshold (.DELTA. K $_{th}$) fatigue crack growth can be expressed by the equation .DELTA. $K_{th}$) = .DELTA. $K_{tho}$(1-R)$^{r}$ , where R is stress ratio, .DELTA. $K_{tho}$ is .DELTA. K at R = 0 and r is material constant. The stable crack growth rate against stress intensity factor range .DELTA. K exhibits the trilinear form with two transitions and results of investigation on crack closure phenomena showed that the crack opening stress intensity factor $K_{op}$ is approximately equal to R $K_{max}$. + .DELTA. • In this study, CT specimens were prepared from spring steel(SUP9) processed shot peening which was room temperature, low temperature and high temperature experiment. And we got the following characteristics from fatigue crack growth test carried out in the environment of room, low temperature and high temperature at $25^{\circ}C$,$-30^{\circ}C$,$-50^{\circ}C$,$-70^{\circ}C$ and $-100^{\circ}C$ in the range of stress ratio of 0.05 by means of opening mode displacement. The threshold stress intensity factor range $\Delta K_{th}$ in the early stage of fatigue crack growth (Region I ) and stress intensity factor range $\Delta K$ in the stable of fatigue crack growth (Region II) was decreased in proportion to descend temperature. It assumed that the fatigue resistance characteristics and fracture strength at low temperature and high temperature is considerable higher than that of room temperature in the early stage and stable of fatigue crack growth region.
