  • In this study, fatigue growth behavior of the transverse crack, which was the most dangerous damage among the various types of rail defects, was investigated using the notched keyhole specimen under constant amplitude loadings. Fatigue limit of smooth specimen in rail steel at R=0 was 110MPa, and the fatigue crack initiation life in the region of the low stress amplitude (ie. long life) occupied the major portion of the total fatigue life. The fatigue strength under variable amplitude loading was converted to the equivalent fatigue strength based upon. Miners rule, which was estimated approximately 9% lower than that under constant amplitude loading. Also, in the low ΔK(sub)rms region ($\leq$21MPa√m), fatigue crack growth rate (da/dN) under constant amplitude loading was higher than that under variable amplitude loading, whereas the tendency was reversed in the high ΔK(sub)rms region. It is believed that this behavior is due to the transition of fracture appearance.

  • Defective components of interest include not only homogeneous components, but also components with weldments where tensile properties vary across the weldment. Noting that the region near the weldment is the most vulnerable place for crack initiation and subsequent growth, defect assessment methods for homogeneous structure. Moreover, weldment width and crack location also affects the deformation and fracture behavior of the welded joints. These weld characteristics can evaluate using plastic limit load. So in this paper, evaluate plastic limit load both full circumference part-throughwall cracked pipes and circumference through-wall cracked pipes considering weld characteristics. And using evaluate results, proposed J-integral and crack opening displacement(COD) estimate method based on reference stress method.

  • It is well known that mechanisms of fracture and crack growth depend upon material characteristics such as fracture toughness, environmental condition, cracd geometry and mechanical properties. It seems to be very important to investihate the effects of the above factors on the behavior of structural components which contain flaws for the detailed evaluation of their intehrity. In this experimental research, fracture behaviors of moterials were investigated by using Acoustic Emission(AE) technique. The fracturing processes of materials were estimated through both the tension specimens. For the detrmlnatlon of yied strength or fracture toughness, the critical applied load at the crack initiation and propagation is thought to be very important. The critical applied load(PQ) was determined through AE signal. The source of AE signal was estimated by fractography analysis. These experimental results may contribute to the safety analyses and the evaluation of strength of structures.

It seems to be very important to investighate the effects of the above factors on the behavior of structural components which contain flaws for the detailed evaluation of their integrity. In this experimental research, fracture behaviors of SK-5 high carbon steel was investigated by using Acoustic Emission(AE) technique. Fracturing processes of materials were estimated through both the tension test with nominal specimens and the fracture test with compact tension specimens. The critical applied load which corresponds to the crack initiation and propagation is very improtant for the determination of yield strength of fracture toughness. The critical applied load($P_Q$) was determined through AE method and the source of AE signal was estimated by fractography analysis. The experimental results may contribute to the safety analyses and strength evaluation of structures.

  • The R-curve for in situ-toughened SiC-30 wt% TiC composites was estimated by the indentation-strength method and compared to that of monolithic SiC with toughened microstructure. Both materials exhibited rising R-curve behavior. The SiC-TiC composites, however, displayed better damage tolerance and higher resistance to crack growth. Total volume fractions of SiC key grains, which take part in toughening mechanisms such as crack bridging and crack deflection, were 0.607 for monolithic SiC ceramics and 0.614 for SiC-TiC composites. From the microstructural characterization and the residual stress calculation, it was inferred that this superior performance of SiC-TiC composites can be attributed to stress-induced microcracking at heterophase (SiC/TiC) boundaries and some contribution from carck deflection by TiC grains.

  • When Li2O.2SiO2 glass was crystallized between the temperature of maximum nucleation and the temperature of maximum crystal growth it was found that the control of heating rate had serious effect on the crystallinity and microstructure and the greatly changed physical properties. Density and elastic modulus tends to increase but thermal expansion coefficient decreased with increased crystallinity. When heating rate between the tempe-rature of maximum nucleation and the temperature of maximum crystal growth was 10~5$0^{\circ}C$/hr. crystallinity was increased to result in the increment of strength. When nuclation was done at 44$0^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours and the temperature of crystal growth was held at 575$^{\circ}C$ strength was increased until crystallinity reached 65% and strength was decreased with higher crystallinity. These phenomena could be explained that even for the same crystallinity different heat rates resulted in different number and size of cracks.

  • Steel fiber and polymer are used widely for reinforcement material of RC structures because of its excellences of the durability, serviceability as well as mechanical properties. The purpose of this study is to investigate the shear behavior of polymer cement high strength concrete beams mixed with steel fiber. The compressive strength of concrete was based on the 100$\times$200 mm cylinder specimens. The compressive strength of concrete are 320$kgf/cm^2$, 436 $kgf/cm^2$ and 520 $kgf/cm^2$ in the 28 days. The static test was carried out to measure the ultimate load, the initial load of flexural and diagonal cracking, crack patterns and fracture modes. Also, load-strain and load-deflection examined. During the test cracks were sketched against the load values according to the growth of crack. result are as follows; (1) The failure modes of the specimens are increased in rigidity and durability with mixing steel fiber and polymer. (2) The load of initial crack was similar a theory of shear-crack strength. (3) The deflection and strain at failure load of Polymer-steel fiber high strength concrete beams were increased, improving the brittleness of the high strength concrete.

  • Metal matrix composites had generated a lot of interest in recent time because of their high specific strength and stiffness in specific properties. It was also highlighted as the material of frontier industry because strength, heat-resistance, corrosion-resistance and wear-resistance were superiored. In this study, the strength properties of $Al_{18}B_{4}O_{33}$/AC4CH composites were represented mixing the binder of $SiO_2$. It was also fabricated by squeeze casting. $Al_{18}B_{4}O_{33}$/AC4CH was fabricated at the melt temperature of $760^{\circ}C$, the perform temperature of $700^{\circ}C$ and mold temperature of $200^{\circ}C$ under the pressure of 83.4MPa. Consequently, fatigue life was observed roughly in the order of AC4CH> nobiner> $SiO_2$, independently on crack propagation direction and stress ratio.

  • The fracture toughness improvement of Ni-Mn-Ga-Fe ferromagnetic shape memory alloys containing ductile particles was explained by direct observation of microfracture processes using an in situ loading stage installed inside a scanning electron microscope (SEM) chamber. The Ni-Mn-Ga-Fe alloys contained a considerable amount of ductile particles in the grains after the homogenization treatment at $800{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$. ${\gamma}$ particles were coarsened and distributed homogeneously along {$\beta}$ grain boundaries as well as inside {$\beta}$ grains as the homogenization temperature increased. The in situ microfracture observation results indicated that ${\gamma}$ particles effectively acted as blocking sites of crack propagation, and provided stable crack growth that could be confirmed by the R-curve analysis. This increase in fracture resistance with increasing crack length improved overall fracture properties of the alloys containing ${\gamma}$ particles.

  • The mechanical properties of aluminized steel were investigated after the JIS SB 41 plates were dipped in molten aluminum bath. (1) The growth rate of iron-aluminum alloy layer was fast in early stage of alumizing, and then gradually decreased with increasing time. However, over the time period above 10 minutes the growth of alloy layer did not occur. (2) The constituent of alloy layer formed on the steel surface was identified to be intermetallic compound of $Fe_2\;Al_5$. (3) The ultimate tensile strength and elongation of aluminized steel showed a nearly constant value over all thickness below about 0.15 mm. However, both properties decreased rapidly in showed a nearly constant value over all thickness above about 0.20 mm. (4) In case of aluminized steel with greater thickness, crack was formed below yield point of base metal, which is considered to be attributed to the alloy layer failure.
