The high temperature fatigue crack growth behavior of SUS 304 stainless steel at $550^{\circ}C$ and $650^{\circ}C$ was investigated under various kinds of stress ratio and frequency in sinusoidal waveform on the basis of the non-linear fracture mechanics. The result arranging crack growth rate by modified J-integral J' showed influence of stress ratio and frequency. All the data obtained under the test at $550^{\circ}C$ were plotted within data band of da/dN-${\triangle}J_f$ relationship for cycle-dependent crack growth. On the basis of static creep and cycle-dependent data band; both time- and cycle-dependent crack growth behavior was observed under loading conditions at $650^{\circ}C$, but cycle-dependent crack growth behavior predominantly appeared and time-dependent crack growth behaviour was little observed under loading conditions at $550^{\circ}C$. Fractographic examinations for fracture surface indicated that the fracture mode was generally transgranular. The stripes were found on fracture surface and each stripe was accompanied by a crack tip blunting and an abrupt increase in the load-point displacement. The $J'_{an}$ had a validity in case of $650^{\circ}C, but scarcely had it in case of $550^{\circ}C$.

Three point bending tests of single edge notched beam (SENB) specimens were carried out to evaluate the fracture behavior of the fine-grain isotropic nuclear grade graphite, IG-11. To measure the crack initiation point and the subsequent crack growth, the direct current potential drop (DCPD) method and a traveling microscope were used. The effects of test variables like initial crack length, specimen thickness, notch type and loading rate on the measured fracture toughness, $K_Q$, were investigated. Based on the test results, the ranges of the test variables to measure the reliable fracture toughness value were proposed. During the crack growth, the rising R-curve behavior was observed in IG-11 graphite when the superficial crack length measured on the specimen surface was used. The increase of crack growth resistance was discussed in terms of crack bridging, crack meandering, crack branching, microcracking and crack deflection, which increase the surface energy and friction force.
In this study, to investigate the effects of omitting low-amplitude cycles from a flight-simulation loading, crack growth tests are conducted on 2124-T851 aluminum alloy specimens. Three test spectra are generated by omitting small load ranges as counted by the rain-flow count method. The crack growth test results are compared with the data obtained from the flight-simulation loading. The experimental results show that omission of the load ranges below 5% of the maximum load does not significantly affect crack growth behavior, because these are below the initial stress intensity factor range. However, in the case of omitting the load ranges below 15% of the maximum load, crack growth rates decrease, and therefore crack growth curve deviates from the crack growth data under the flight-simulation loading. To optimize the load range that can be omitted, crack growth curves are simulated by the stochastic crack growth model. The prediction shows that the omission level can be extended to 8% of the maximum load and test time can be reduced by 59%.
Constant .DELTA.K fatigue crack growth rate experiments were performed by applying an intermediate single and multiple overload for structural steel, SM45C. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the influence of multiple overloads at various stress intensity factor ranges and the effect of statistical variability of crack retardation behavior. The normalized delayed load cycle, delayed crack length and the minimum crack growth rate are increased with increasing baseline stress intensity factor range when the overload ratio and the number of overload application were constant. The crack retardation under low baseline stress intensity factor range increases by increasing the number of overload application, but the minimum crack growth rate decreases by increasing the number of overload application. A strong linear correlation exists between the minimum crack growth rate and the number of overload applications. And, it was observed that the variability in the crack growth retardation behavior are presented, the probability distribution functions of delayed load cycle, delayed crack length and crack growth life are 2-parameter Weibull. The coefficient of variation of delayed load cycle and delayed crack length for the number of 10 overload applications data are 14.8 and 9.2%, respectively.

The research trends for metal matrix composites have been on basic mechanical properties, fatigue behavior after aging and fractographic observations. In this study, the fatigue crack initiation as well as the fatigue crack growth behavior and the fracture mechanism were investigated through observations of the fracture surface on silicon carbide particles reinforced aluminum metal matrix composites(SiCp/Al). Based on the fractographic study done by scanning electron microscope and replica, crack growth path model and fracture mechanism are presented. The mechanical properties, such as the tensile strength, yield strength and elongation of SiCp/Al composites are improved in a longitudinal direction, however, the fatigue life is shorter than the basic Al6061 alloys. From fractographic observations, it is found that the failure mode is ductile in basic Ai6061 alloys. And because some SiC particles were pulled out from the matrix and a few SiC particles could be seen on the fracture surface of SiCp/Al, crack growth paths are believed to follow the interface of the matrix and its particles.
Fatigue life and retardtion behavior after through-thickness were examined experimentally by using a CT specimen and surface-cracked specimen. The material used was 3% Ni-Cr-Mo steel. The fatigue crack shape before through-thickness is almost semicircular, and the measured aspect ratio is larger than the value obtained by calculation using the K value proposed by Newman-Raju. It is found that the crack growth behavior on the back side after through-ghickness is unique and can be divided into three stages a, b and c. A retardation parameter has been used successfully to predict the growth of cracks in specimen, and in this time, retardation factor is 4.3. By using the crack propagation rule considering on retardation state and the K value proposed by the authors, the remarkable crack growth behavior and the change in crack shape can be evaluated quantitatively.

In this study, Fatigue crack growth behavior of the laser welded sheet metal due to a single overload was investigated. From Fatigue crack propagation test, it was observed that the retardation of fatigue crack growth has been more effective in the welded specimen than in the base metal. And if the distance between the welded part and the position of overload is too close the retardation of fatigue crack growth at the welded part has been decreased. From FEM analysis, it was observed the retardation has been more effective compressive residual stress than plastic zone.

To examine the effect of acid fog on the corrosion fatigue behavior in structural steel, fatigue tests under acid fog atmosphere were carried out in comparison with distilled water. The corrosive c omponents contained in acid fog pile up the corrosion products on crack face and show a crack branching and crack tip blunting. Therefore, due to these workings crack growth rate was reduced by decreasing the effective stress range in crack tip rather than under distilled water. Also the effect of sulfuric acid, which is the main component of acid fog, and testing speed on fatigue crack growth were examined. It was found that corrosion behavior was remarkably dependent upon pH and Hz rather than components of acid fog. According as pH and testing speed decrease below a specific value, crack growth was accelerated in comparison with distilled water. This reveals that due to liquid having strong acidity and slow speed of test the crack face dissolution was promoted, so crack closure was disturbed in the process of stress descent.

The effects of short fiber and particle hybrid reinforcement on fatigue crack propagation behaviors in aluminum matrix composites have been investigated. Single and hybrid reinforced 6061 aluminum containing same 20 $Al_2O_3\;volume\%$ with four different constituent ratios of short fibers and particles were prepared by squeeze casting method and tested to check the near-threshold and stable crack growth behavior. The fatigue threshold of the composites increased with portion of particle contents and showed the improved crack resistance especially in low stress intensity range. Addition of particle instead of short fiber also increased fracture toughness due to increase of inter-reinforcement distance. These increase in both fatigue threshold and fracture toughness eventually affected the fatigue crack growth behavior such that the crack growth curve shift low to high stress intensity factor value. Overall experimental results were shown that particle reinforcement was enhanced the fatigue crack resistance over the whole stress intensity factor range.

Fatigue crack growth tests were carried out using high manganese cast steel under constant amplitude loading. Crystal grain size of the material is about 1000$\mu\textrm{m}$. For this material, the fatigue crack growth mechanism of high manganese steel was clarified from results such as observation of crack growth path and fracture surface. $\Delta$$K_{th}$ is about 8MPa$\surd$m which is quiet large as compared to the general structural steels and the crack growth rate is lower than the general structural steels especilly in the low $\Delta$K regsion. The reason of this behavior is crack closure due to fracture surface roughness.
