In Seoul, structural deterioration is severe in the private masonry buildings which have been built since 1906s. But most of these structures remain without any repair works. As a result, the rate of deterioration is getting faster and these dangerous structures may cause hazardous circumstances to the adjacent structures and neighborhood. The purpose of this study is to investigate the actual conditions of wall cracks among the defect types which occur in private masonry buildings and to analyze the correlation between safety grades and wall cracks for offering the fundamental data. Using these date we can establish basic criteria for safety grades of structures and improve the quality of masonry buildings. The result of this study indicate that there are high correlations between safety grades and the width of crack but much less so with the length. Furthermore, with regard to crack patterns, vertical cracks much more negatively effected the safety grades.

CFRP is the composite material manufactured by the hybrid resin on the basis of carbon fiber. As this material has the high specific strength and the light weight, it has been widely used at various fields. Particularly, the unidirectional carbon fiber can be applied with the layer angle. CFRP made with layer angle has the strength higher than with no layer angle. In this paper, the property of crack growth due to each layer angle was investigated on the crack propagation and fracture behavior of the CFRP compact tension specimen due to the change of layer angle. The value of maximum stress is shown to be decreased and the crack propagation is slowed down as the layer angle is increased. But the limit according to the layer angle is shown as the stress is increased again from the base point of the layer angle of $60^{\circ}$. This study result is thought to be utilized with the data which verify the probability of fatigue fracture when the defect inside the structure at using CFRP of mechanical structure happens.

In this study, the rotary bending fatigue test was carried out with two kinds of material, S43C and S50C, using in the Front engine and Front drive wheels(F.F.) of vehicle. The one part of specimens was heated by high frequency induction method(about 1mm depth and $H_RC$ 56~60) and tested environment temperature were $-30^{\circ}C$, $+25^{\circ}C$ and $+80^{\circ}C$ in order to look over the influence of the heat treatment and the temperatures. In the experimented result at $+25^{\circ}C$ and $+80^{\circ}C$, the fatigue life of non-heated specimens were decreased about 35%, but that of heated specimens were decreased about only 5% at $+80^{\circ}C$ more than at $25^{\circ}C$. And in the experiment result at $-30^{\circ}C$ and $+25^{\circ}C$, the non-heated and heated specimens were about 110%, 120% higher fatigue life at $-30^{\circ}C$ than at the $+25^{\circ}C$ each other. On the other hand, the fatigue crack propagation rate of S50C was higher than that of S43C.

Improvements in the quality of life have resulted in a heightened awareness of safety and the environment. As a result, timber as an environmentally friendly material, is used for landscape facilities and a wide range of purposes. But there are a large number of defects since there are twists and cracks that can be found in wooden landscape facilities. This has led to the use of imported hardwood instead of the Western Hemlock which has been in widespread use. Hardwood is expensive. However, it is being used without any information or research on how much it reduces the actual defects. Construction contractors are in great need of information on the characteristics and defect rates of different types of timber. This study investigated and analyzed the cracks in four types of timber - namely the Western Hemlock, Burckella, Nyatoh and Malas - in order to provide basic information to construction contractor for them to be able to select and use the appropriate type of timber. The main results of this study are as follows. First, the Western Hemlock had 1.90 $cracks/m^2$, Malas had 0.83 $cracks/m^2$, Burckella had 0.14 $cracks/m^2$, and the Nyatoh had the least number of surface defects at 0.04 $cracks/m^2$. Second, while Malas has the highest degree of strength timber, Nyatoh had the smallest defect rate. This showed that having high timber strength does not necessarily mean it has less defects. Third, the Western Hemlock was the least expensive and Burckella was the most expensive. However, considering the cost of repairing defects, it would be economically advantageous to use Burckella and Nyatoh which have low defect rates. This study aimed to provide basic information to landscape construction contractors for them to be able to select and use the appropriate type of timber when constructing wooden outdoor rest furniture. The results are expected to contribute to quality enhancements and defect reduction in landscape facilities.

FEF(Focused Electromagnetic Field) technique was newly developed that is based on the induction principle exciting electromagnetic field. The technique consists of an induction wire and a sensor for detecting electromagnetic field, and is applied in a non-contact mode. In this study, the technique was applied to the evaluation of EDM slits in some conductive materials - aluminum alloy, stainless steel and Inconel alloy. The voltage in the non-defect region is depended upon the measurement lift-off. The voltage signals on defects are measured with peak values, and the peak values changed with the depth of defects. The voltage distributions for all conductive materials are the same trend.
In case of this thick rolling-steel for a multistory building, a large oil-drilling structure, a large vessel, a bridge and so on, Lamella Tearing around the welded joint zone is the most serious problems. In order to prevent Lamella Tearing, not only is choice of material important, but also the comprehensive investigation for the structural design and the construction. The Lamella Tearing that is a staircase-shape occurs due to the contraction stress to the thickness direction of the plate and has the character that the cracks progress along the elongated inclusion by rolling. In general, because cracks occur at the heat affected zone and around HAZ, it is necessary to establish the safety and the confidence of the welded structure to restrain the welding defect such as Lamella Tearing. The mechanical approaches are the easier and more economical than the approaches of the material and the construction method. In addition, the appropriate welding profile and the optimum welding condition contribute toward the improvement of the productivity and influence on the standardization of the manufacturing technology.

As a nondestructive inspection technology currently in use, infrared thermography has gradually expanded its application range to industry. The method detects only defect areas by grafting ultrasound on a technique of detecting infrared energy emitted from all objects with absolute temperature of 0 K and converting this energy into thermography for inspection. Ultrasound infrared thermography has merits including the ability to inspect a wide area in a short time without contacting the target object. This study investigated the applicability of the technique for defect detection using variable ultrasound excitation inspection methods on samples of Terfenol-D, a magnetostrictive material with a tunable natural resonant frequency.
In this study, effects of forming angle and friction coefficient on a initiation of the Mannesmann hole defect were analyzed by using a response surface method. The maximum effective plastic strain at center point of specimen is utilized for the prediction of the starting point of crack occurrence, which is suggested by the comparison of integrals of four different ductile fracture models between the histories of the effective plastic strain at center point. It was revealed that the principal stress at the center is the dominant element to the increase of the effective plastic strain. It was also verified by the simulation results from the comparison of experiment and simulation. It is provided that the forming angle of 25 degrees and the spreading angle of 1 degree can be a proper design condition without an occurrence of internal hole defect and an excessive slip.

Recently, with the development of the fourth industrial revolution that has been achieved through the fusion of information and communication technology (ICT), the technologies of AI, IOT, BIG-DATA, it is increasing utilization rate by industry and research and development of application technologies are being actively carried out. Especially, in the case of unmanned aerial vehicles, the construction market is expected to be one of the most commercialized areas in the world for the next decade. However, research on utilization of unmanned aerial vehicles in the construction field in Korea is insufficient. In this study, We have developed a quantitative building inspection method using the unmanned aerial vehicle and presented the protocol for it. The proposed protocol was verified by applying it to existing old buildings, and defect information could be quantified by calculating length, width, and area for each defect. Through this technical research, the final goal is to contribute to the development of safety diagnosis technology using unmanned aerial vehicle and risk assessment technology of buildings in case of disaster such as earthquake.

When a high-energy ultrasound propagates through a solid body that contains a crack or a delamination, the two faces of the defect do not ordinarily vibrate in unison, and dissipative phenomena such as friction, rubbing and clapping between the faces will convert some of the vibrational energy to heat. By combining this heating effect with infrared imaging, one can detect a subsurface defect in material in real time. In this paper a realtime detection of the brazing defect of thin Inconel plates using the UIR (ultrasonic infrared imaging) technology is described. A low frequency (23 kHz) ultrasonic transducer was used to infuse the welded Inconel plates with a short pulse of sound for 280 ms. The ultrasonic source has a maximum power of 2 kW. The surface temperature of the area under inspection is imaged by an infrared camera that is coupled to a fast frame grabber in a computer. The hot spots, which are a small area around the bound between the two faces of the Inconel plates near the defective brazing point and heated up highly, are observed. And the weak thermal signal is observed at the defect position of brazed plate also. Using the image processing technology such as background subtraction average and image enhancement using histogram equalization, the position of defective brazing regions in the thin Inconel plates can be located certainly.
