  • The trnL-F region islocated in the large single-copy region of the chloroplast genome. It consists of the trnL gene, the trnL intron, and the trnL-F IGS. Molecular evolution and phylogenetic relationships in Korean Thalictrum L. were investigated using data from the cpDNA trnL-F region. Bayesian and parsimony analyses of the data set with the gap characteristics recovered well-resolved trees that are topologically similar, with clades supported by some indels evolution. Indel events of cpDNA trnL-F in Korean Thalictrum were interpreted as phylogenetically informative characteristics. Sect. Physocarpum (excluding T. osmorhizoides) was an early-diverging group with in the genus and the remaining section formed strongly supported clades. Korean Thalictrum has various evolutionary patterns, such as the spatial distribution of the nucleotide diversity and transversion-type base substitutions in the trnL-F region.

  • Genetic variations and relationship based on the sequences of cpDNA trnL-F gene, nrDNA ITS and ETS region among the twenty four taxa including Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer and its related species were investigated. And taxonomic status and molecular phylogenetic relationship between P. ginseng and related groups were discussed. Molecular systematic data from cpDNA and nrDNA sequences were very useful to elucidate the genetic variations and relationships among the treated taxa. It was found that P. ginseng is the independent unique species with distinct genetic limitation from the related species such as P. quinquefolius, P. japonicum, P. notoginseng and P. pseudoginseng. P. ginseng including cultivated types as well as wild ones formed monophyletic group with high genetic similarities. P. quinquefolius and P. japonicum were the most related sister groups of P. ginseng based on the molecular phylogenetic results in this study.

  • Colonies of three independent gametophytes (one that is filamentous and two that are ribbon-like) without sporophytes occur in Gyeonggi-do, Gangwon-do, Gyeongsang-do, and Jeju-do, Korea. They have a moss-like appearance at first sight, with tiny plantlets and gemmae, and grow in cool, shaded, relatively deep dint places of large rocks, such as the small caves in high mountains, close to valleys. The gametophytes were identified based on morphological and molecular data by chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) sequence data (rbcL, rps4 gene and rps4-trnS intergenic spacer). Here, rbcL, rps4 gene and rps4-trnS intergenic spacer data of one independent gametophyte distributed in Korea have the same morphology, DNA sequence and monophyletic group as Crepidomanes intricatum from the eastern United States. They also share the same cpDNA data with Crepidomanes schmidtianum recently reported from Korea. The other independent gametophyte should be Hymenophyllum wrightii based on cpDNA data. The last one was presumed to be Pleurosoriopsis makinoi based on molecular data. The taxonomic status was confirmed to be the forma of Hymenophyllum wrightii through a revision of Hymenophyllum wrightii f. serratum based on molecular data.

  • This study aims to define the phylogenetic relationship within Korean Pinus L. and to find the molecular markers which resolve the phylogenetic relationship in genus Pinus. cpDNA atpF-H and psbA-trnH regions were used as molecular markers. We performed the molecular phylogenetic study on 17 taxa of Pinus in Korea. The combined analyses of two gene loci showed that Korean Pinus was a monophyletic group supported by 100% BP. According to the results of separate analyses, psbA-trnH region seems to work better resolving power to clarify the phylogenetic ambiguity in Korean Pinus than those of atpF-H region. Also, we tried to checked the value and resolution of two chloroplast DNA loci on phylogenetic implications.
