This research was carried out to investigate several mechanical characteristics of pre-stressed steel beams. The configuration of specimens used for this study were as follows; a cover plate having permissible fiber stress of 4,000 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ was welded at bottom having the allowable bending stress 2500 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ steel beam, the section ratios of pre-stressed steel beam and cover plate were 0.5 and 0.6. Adopted pre-stresses were 0%, 50%, and 100% of an allowable fiber stress of a steel beam. The results obtained from the study may be summarized as follows; 1. The elastic range of a beam was increased by the application of pre-stress to the beam, which leads to a lighter section. 2. The permissible moment capacity of a pre-stressed steel beam was greated than that of a steel beam without pre-stressing. 3. The equivalent allowable stress induced by adopting the different section ratio of pre-stressed beam to cover plate were figured out 4. The optimum value of section ratio of beam and cover plate was 0.3 to 0.4 in case of a 1.5m span composite beam, a combination of an allowable stress 2,500kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ steel beam and a permissible fiber stress 4,000 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ steel cover plate, was used. 5. The magnitude of the pre-stress was desirable to be same as the allowable stress of a steel beam. 6. It was concluded that if the construction techniques in the field are developed and improved, the practicing of pre-stress to the steel structure has a promising future.
In this study, the experimental bending behaviors of an H-secti on-steel-beam-attached high-strength steel plate or steel beam were analyzed. Its structural performance was verified by comparing the results of the experiment and the analysis that were conducted. In fabricating an unprestressed composite beam using two members that have different strengths, the generated slip on the joint in proport problem because of the redistribution of force caused by the lose state of the joint. Therefore, when fabricating composite beams, it is important to load them with prestressed forces. Based on the results of the experiment that was conducted, the prestressed composite-steel-beam-attached steel plate or beam has a higher bending resistance and load-carrying capacit

This paper systematically investigated the mechanical performance of the weak-axis cover-plate connection, including a beam end monotonic loading test and a column top cyclic loading test, and a series of parametric studies for exterior and interior joints under cyclic loading using a nonlinear finite element analysis program ABAQUS, focusing on the influences of the shape of top cover-plate, the length and thickness of the cover-plate, the thickness of the skin plate, and the steel material grade. Results showed that the strains at both edges of the beam flange were greater than the middle's, thus it is necessary to take some technical methods to ensure the construction quality of the beam flange groove weld. The plastic rotation of the exterior joint can satisfy the requirement of FEMA-267 (1995) of 0.03 rad, while only one side connection of interior joint satisfied ANSI/AISC 341-10 under the column top cyclic loading. Changing the shape or the thickness or the length of the cover-plate did not significantly affect the mechanical behaviors of frame joints no matter in exterior joints or interior joints. The length and thickness of the cover-plate recommended by FEMA 267 (1995) is also suitable to the weak-axis cover-plate joint. The minimum skin plate thickness and a design procedure for the weak-axis cover-plate connections were proposed finally.
When the vertical load-bearing members in high-rise structures fail locally, the beam-column joints play an important role in the redistribution of the internal forces. In this paper, a static laboratory test of three full-scale flush flange beam-reinforced connections with side and cover plates (CP-FBSP connection) with double half-span steel beams and single L-shaped columns composed of concrete-filled steel tubes (L-CFST columns) was conducted. The influence of the side plate width and cover plate thickness on the progressive collapse resistance of the substructure was thoroughly analyzed. The failure mode, vertical force-displacement curves, strain variation, reaction force of the pin support and development of internal force in the section with the assumed plastic hinge were discussed. Then, through the verified finite element model, the corresponding analyses of the thickness and length of the side plates, the connecting length between the steel beam flange and cover plate, and the vertical-force eccentricity were carried out. The results show that the failure of all the specimens occurred through the cracking of the beam flange or the cover plate, and the beam chord rotations measured by the test were all greater than 0.085 rad. Increasing the length, thickness and width of the side plates slightly reduced the progressive collapse resistance of the substructures. The vertical-force eccentricity along the beam length reduced the progressive collapse resistance of the substructure. An increase in the connecting length between the beam flange and cover plate can significantly improve the progressive collapse resistance of substructures.

In designing a high strength bolted beam splice using steel for building structures, it is necessary to present the appropriate steel grade selection criteria for how to determine the cover plate steel grade. This study examined the difference in tensile behavior according to the steel grades through static tensile tests simulating the beam member high strength bolt joints flange. For this purpose, the specimens were designed and fabricated with the main variables, such as the thickness, steel grade and the strength of flange and cover plate, which are expected to affect the splice strength and behavior. The tensile test results for a total of 48 specimens showed that the tensile-load capacity exceeded the design tensile strength applied with a nominal strength of steel in all specimens. When the design strength of the cover plate exceeded 1.25 times that of the flange plate, the flange plate governed the behavior of splice. The change in maximum tensile load due to the change in flange steel grade is not very large, but there is a difference in deformation. The test results confirmed that the steel grade and thickness of the cover plate were the main factors affecting the beam splice behavior.

This study investigates developments in a prestressing method using the thermal-expanded cover-plates that increases the load-carrying capacity of structures by installing it on upper or lower flanges in case that huge flexural stiffness according to the increase in span length or load are required of steel structure, such as rolled H-beam or built-up beam. This method applies multi-stepwise contraction forces generated by the contraction of cover plates as prestressing forces after joining the cover plate applied by multi-stepwise thermal expansion that was applied to induce prestressing to structures. To perform a theoretical investigation of the prestressing force applied to a structure due to the thermal expansion and induce a multi-stepwise prestressing method using multi-stepwise thermal distribution, this study proposes a theoretical heat transfer solution for the multi-stepwise thermal distribution of cover plates and analyzes the effect of a multi-stepwise prestressing method using the multi-stepwise thermal expansion.

This study evaluates the load-carrying capacity of a thermal prestressed steel beam with an eccentric bracket. The steel beam that is proposed in this study has an eccentrically installed cover plate through application of the eccentric bracket. The eccentric bracket helps the steel beam achieve greater sectional stiffness and more efficiently induces prestress. A material non-linear characteristic applied finite element analysis was also conducted to check the validity of the experiments. The results of this study showed that the structural stiffness, yield load, and ultimate strength of the TPSM-applied steel beam with the eccentric bracket increased due to the eccentricity of the cover plate.

This paper presents the details of Finite Element (FE) analysis carried out to determine the limiting deformation capacity and failure mode of Laced Steel-Concrete Composite (LSCC) beam, which was proposed and experimentally studied by the authors earlier (Anandavalli et al. 2012). The present study attains significance due to the fact that LSCC beam is found to possess very high deformation capacity at which range, the conventional laboratory experiments are not capable to perform. FE model combining solid, shell and link elements is adopted for modeling the beam geometry and compatible nonlinear material models are employed in the analysis. Besides these, an interface model is also included to appropriately account for the interaction between concrete and steel elements. As the study aims to quantify the limiting deformation capacity and failure mode of the beam, a suitable damage model is made use of in the analysis. The FE model and results of nonlinear static analysis are validated by comparing with the load-deformation response available from experiment. After validation, the analysis is continued to establish the limiting deformation capacity of the beam, which is assumed to synchronise with tensile strain in bottom cover plate reaching the corresponding ultimate value. The results so found indicate about $20^{\circ}$ support rotation for LSCC beam with $45^{\circ}$ lacing. Results of parametric study indicate that the limiting capacity of the LSCC beam is more influenced by the lacing angle and thickness of the cover plate.
This paper presents an experimental study on the flexural capacity of an encased(slim-floor) composite beam, which is a wider plate under bottom flange of H-beam with web openings. Five simple full-scale bending tests were conducted on the encased(slim-floor) composite beams at varying steel beam heights (250mm and 300mm), positions of web openings, and loading conditions. The test results revealed that the web-open encased composite beam had sufficient composite action, without any additional shear connection devices, because of the inherent shear-bond effects between the steel beam and the concrete, and a stable structural performance without web-opening reinforcements.

In this study, static loading tests were performed on H-beam specimens to assess the static behavior of H-beam prestressed with multi-stepwise thermal prestressing method (TPSM). The amount of induced thermal prestress and connection type were differentiated among the 400-mm-high and 6,000-mm-long H-beam specimens to evaluate their effect on the behavior of the beams. From the experimental results, it between the H-beam and the cover-plate increased in yielding load by 13~18%, whereas stiffness increased by 27~34%. In case of specimens with both bolting and welding connection, yie lding load increased by 18~29% and stiffness increased by 43~51%. Multi-stepwise initial stress distribution was also observed from the prestressed specimens, verifying the effectiveness of the multi-stepwise TPSM. By application of the multi-stepwise TPSM, a significant increase in yielding load and stiffness can be achieved, hence increasing sectional and prestressing efficiencies.
