  • A contactless recharging device for totally implantable middle ear systems has been designed as a pillow type that the user can recharge the implanted battery with taking a rest. The proposed device uses the electromagnetic coupling between the transmitting coil and the receiving coil. To supply sufficient power for the implanted circuits, each coil uses LC resonance and the implanted device uses voltage doubler. A power MOSFET is used for switching the DC voltage of LC parallel circuit and the switching frequency demands on a programmable frequency generator which is controlled by microcontroller. In order to improve the electromagnetic coupling efficiency at specific positions of coil which may vary with the displacement of head, the optimal location of receiving coil was studied, and the 5 transmitting coils in a pillow for recharging the implant module was designed. From such a recharging experiment, it was found that the proposed device could provide the sufficient operating voltage within the distance of 4 cm between pillow and the implanted device.

  • An analysis and design theory of an aperture-coupled cavity-fed back-to-back microstrip directional coupler is presented for the efficient and optimized design. For this purpose, an equivalent network is developed, and simple but accurate calculations of circuit element values are described. Design equations of the coupler are derived based on the equivalent circuit. In order to determine various structural design parameters, the evolutionary hybrid optimization method based on the genetic algorithm and Nelder-Mead method is invoked. As a validation check of the proposed theory and optimized design method, a 10 dB directional coupler was designed and fabricated. The measured coupling was 10.3 dB at 3 GHz, and the return loss and isolation were 31.8 dB and 30.5 dB, respectively. The directional coupler also showed very good quadrature phase characteristics. Good agreements between the measured and the design specifications fully validate the proposed network analysis and design procedure.

  • In this paper, a novel circuit topology of a three-winding coupling inductor-assisting a high-frequency PWM boost chopper type DC-DC power converter with a high boost voltage conversion ratio and low switch voltage stress is proposed for the new energy interfaced DC power conditioner in solar photovoltaic and fuel cell generation systems. The operating principle in a steady state is described by using its equivalent circuits under the practical condition of energy processing of a lossless capacitive snubber. The newly-proposed power MOSFET boost chopper type DC-DC power converter with the three-winding coupled inductor type transformer and a single lossless capacitor snubber is built and tested for an output power of 500W. Utilizing the lower voltage and internal resistance power MOSFET switch in the proposed PWM boost chopper type DC-DC power converter can reduce the conduction losses of the active power switch compared to the conventional model. Therefore, the total actual power conversion efficiency under a condition of the nominal rated output power is estimated to be 81.1 %, which is 3.7% higher than the conventional PWM boost chopper DC power conversion circuit topology.

  • This paper introduces a new U.S. ultra-wideband(UWB: 3.1~10.6 GHz) 1:2 power divider based on a single section Wilkinson type configuration. The divider provides very flat in-band power splitting, high isolation, low insertion loss, sharp roll-off bandpass filtering, and DC blocking characteristics. The circuit consists of a $\lambda$/4 Y resonator, three capacitively coupled $\lambda$/2 short-circuited lines, and a resistor between the two output ports. The circuit structure was simulated with ADS and HFSS, and realized with low-temperature co-fired ceramic(LTCC) green tape, which has a dielectric constant of 7.8. $|S_{11}|$ better than 10 dB, $|S_{21}|$ and $|S_{31}|$ less than 3.2 dB, with both $|S_{22}|$ and $|S_{32}|$ measured as better than 12 dB for the whole UWB band. Measurement results agree closely with HFSS simulation results. The power divider has a compact size of $4\times9\times0.6mm^3$.

  • In this paper, a highly miniaturized and performed UWB bandpass filter has been newly designed and implemented by embedding all the passive elements into a multi-layered PCB substrate with high dielectric $SrTiO_3$ composite film for 3.1 - 4.75 GHz compact UWB system applications. The high dielectric composite film was utilized to increase the capacitance densities and quality factors of capacitors embedded into the PCB. In order to reduce the size of the filter and avoid parasitic EM coupling between the embedded filter circuit elements, it was designed by using a $3^{rd}$ order Chebyshev circuit topology and a capacitive coupled transformation technology. Independent transmission zeros were also applied for improving the attenuation of the filter at the desired stopbands. The measured insertion and return losses in the passband were better than 1.68 and 12 dB, with a minimum value of 0.78 dB. The transmission zeros of the measured response were occurred at 2.2 and 5.15 GHz resulting in excellent suppressions of 31 and 20 dB at WLAN bands of 2.4 and 5.15 GHz, respectively. The size of the fabricated bandpass filter was $2.9{\times}2.8{\times}0.55(H)mm^3$.

  • We experimented on memory multichip modules to increase the packing density of memory devices and to improve their electrical characteristics. A 128K$\times$8bit SRAM module was made of four 32K$\times$8bit SRAM memory chips. The memory multichip module was constructed on a low-cost double sided PCB(printed circuit boared) substrate. In the process of fabricating a multichip module. we focused on the improvement of its electrical characteristics. volume, and weight by employing bare memory chips. The characteristics of the bare chip module was compared with that of the module with four packaged chips. We conducted circuit routing with a PCAD program, and found the followings: the routed area for the module with bare memory chips reduced to a quarter of that area for module with packaged memory chips. 1/8 in volume, 1/5 in weight. Signal transmission delay times calculated by using transmission line model was reduced from 0.8 nsec to 0.4 nsec only on the module board, but the coupling coefficinet was not changed. Thus, we realized that the electrical characteristics of multichip packages on PCB board be improved greatly when using bare memory chips.

  • The electromagnetic parameters of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) such as the open load permanent magnet flux, d axis reactance $X_d$, and q axis reactance $X_q$, are most essential to the performance analysis and optimization design of the motor. Based on the numerical analysis of the 3D electromagnetic field, the three electromagnetic parameters of permanent magnet synchronous motors with U form interior rotor structures are calculated by FEA. The rules of the leakage coefficient and reactance parameters changing with the air gap length, permanent magnet magnetism length, and isolation magnetic bridge dimensions in the rotor are given. The calculated values agree well with the measured values. The FEA results are integrated with the self compiled electromagnetic design program to optimize the prototype motor. The tested performances of the prototype motor prove that the method is suitable for the optimization of motor structure.

  • A general equivalent circuit model is developed for a wireless energy transfer system composed of multiple coils via coupled magnetic resonances. To verify the developed model, four types of wireless energy transfer systems are fabricated, measured, and compared with simulation results. To model a system composed of n-coils, node equations are built in the form of an n-by-n matrix, and the equivalent circuit model is established using an electric design automation tool. Using the model, we can simulate systems with multiple coils, power sources, and loads. Moreover, coupling constants are extracted as a function of the distance between two coils, and we can predict the characteristics of a system having coils at an arbitrary location. We fabricate four types of systems with relay coils, two operating frequencies, two power sources, and the function of characteristic impedance conversion. We measure the characteristics of all systems and compare them with the simulation results. The flexibility of the developed model enables us to design and optimize a complicated system consisting of many coils.

  • Sea waves induce significant pressures on coastal surfaces, especially on rocky vertical cliffs or breakwater structures (Peregrine 2003). In the present work, this hydrodynamic pressure is considered as the excitation acting on a piezoelectric material sheet, installed on a vertical cliff, and connected to an external electric circuit (on land). The whole hydro/piezo/electric system is modeled in the context of linear wave theory. The piezoelectric elements are assumed to be small plates, possibly of stack configuration, under a specific wiring. They are connected with an external circuit, modeled by a complex impedance, as usually happens in preliminary studies (Liang and Liao 2011). The piezoelectric elements are subjected to thickness-mode vibrations under the influence of incident harmonic water waves. Full, kinematic and dynamic, coupling is implemented along the water-solid interface, using propagation and evanescent modes (Athanassoulis and Belibassakis 1999). For most energetically interesting conditions the long-wave theory is valid, making the effect of evanescent modes negligible, and permitting us to calculate a closed-form solution for the efficiency of the energy harvesting system. It is found that the efficiency is dependent on two dimensionless hydro/piezo/electric parameters, and may become significant (as high as 30 - 50%) for appropriate combinations of parameter values, which, however, corresponds to exotically flexible piezoelectric materials. The existence or the possibility of constructing such kind of materials formulates a question to material scientists.
