  • In this paper, a novel PARAllel FACtor (PARAFAC) decomposition based Blind Source Separation (BSS) algorithm is proposed for modal identification of structures equipped with tuned mass dampers. Tuned mass dampers (TMDs) are extremely effective vibration absorbers in tall flexible structures, but prone to get de-tuned due to accidental changes in structural properties, alteration in operating conditions, and incorrect design forecasts. Presence of closely spaced modes in structures coupled with TMDs renders output-only modal identification difficult. Over the last decade, second-order BSS algorithms have shown significant promise in the area of ambient modal identification. These methods employ joint diagonalization of covariance matrices of measurements to estimate the mixing matrix (mode shape coefficients) and sources (modal responses). Recently, PARAFAC BSS model has evolved as a powerful multi-linear algebra tool for decomposing an $n^{th}$ order tensor into a number of rank-1 tensors. This method is utilized in the context of modal identification in the present study. Covariance matrices of measurements at several lags are used to form a $3^{rd}$ order tensor and then PARAFAC decomposition is employed to obtain the desired number of components, comprising of modal responses and the mixing matrix. The strong uniqueness properties of PARAFAC models enable direct source separation with fine spectral resolution even in cases where the number of sensor observations is less compared to the number of target modes, i.e., the underdetermined case. This capability is exploited to separate closely spaced modes of the TMDs using partial measurements, and subsequently to estimate modal parameters. The proposed method is validated using extensive numerical studies comprising of multi-degree-of-freedom simulation models equipped with TMDs, as well as with an experimental set-up.

  • In this study, a convenient approach for sensitive, quick and simple detection of hazardous acids was investigated. A series of azo dyes were synthesized and applied as a chemosensor for the acid detection both on fibers and in solution. Various aniline, benzothiazole or isoxazole derivatives were used as diazo component and coupled with N-benzyl-N-ethylaniline or 2,2'-(phenylimino)bis-ethanol to give azo based dyes. The acid sensing phenomenon was observed by naked-eye and detection was further confirmed by UV-Vis spectrophotometer and hue difference(ΔH*) evaluation. The developed sensors showed a distinct and quick color change from yellow to magenta by addition of trace amounts of the hazardous acids. The absorption maxima was shifted to a longer wavelength by 70 ~ 150nm and hue difference(ΔH*) was 60 ~ 120°. A cotton fiber coated with Dye 1 exhibited excellent storage stability under various temperature(-30 ~ 43℃) and humidity(30 ~ 80%) conditions without discoloration and fading of the fiber sensors. Also the acid sensing properties were maintained.

  • Graphene is one of the strongest, stiffest, and lightest nanoscale materials known to date, making it a potentially viable and attractive candidate for developing lightweight structural composites to prevent high-velocity ballistic impact, as commonly encountered in defense and space sectors. In-plane twist in bilayer graphene has recently revealed unprecedented electronic properties like superconductivity, which has now started attracting the attention for other multi-physical properties of such twisted structures. For example, the latest studies show that twisting can enhance the strength and stiffness of graphene by many folds, which in turn creates a strong rationale for their prospective exploitation in high-velocity impact. The present article investigates the ballistic performance of twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) nanostructures. We have employed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, augmented further by coupling gaussian process-based machine learning, for the nanoscale characterization of various tBLG structures with varying relative rotation angle (RRA). Spherical diamond impactors (with a diameter of 25Å) are enforced with high initial velocity (Vi) in the range of 1 km/s to 6.5 km/s to observe the ballistic performance of tBLG nanostructures. The specific penetration energy (Ep*) of the impacted nanostructures and residual velocity (Vr) of the impactor are considered as the quantities of interest, wherein the effect of stochastic system parameters is computationally captured based on an efficient Gaussian process regression (GPR) based Monte Carlo simulation approach. A data-driven sensitivity analysis is carried out to quantify the relative importance of different critical system parameters. As an integral part of this study, we have deterministically investigated the resonant behaviour of graphene nanostructures, wherein the high-velocity impact is used as the initial actuation mechanism. The comprehensive dynamic investigation of bilayer graphene under the ballistic impact, as presented in this paper including the effect of twisting and random disorder for their prospective exploitation, would lead to the development of improved impact-resistant lightweight materials.

  • We have investigated the properties of the Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA) coupled with the Linear Recurrent Formula which made it possible to complement the parametric time series model. The SSA has been applied to extract the underlying properties of the principal component of hydrologic time series, which can often be identified as trends, seasonalities and other oscillatory series, or noise components. Generally, the prediction by the SSA method can be applied to hydrologic time series governed (may be approximately) by the linear recurrent formulae. This study has examined the forecasting ability of the SSA-LRF model. These methods were applied to monthly discharge and water surface level data. These models indicated that two of the time series have good abilities of forecasting, particularly showing promising results during the period of one year. Thus, the method presented in this study suggests a competitive methodology for the forecast of hydrologic time series.

  • Aluminum alloy sheets, compared to conventional steel sheets, face challenges in press forming due to their lower elongation. To enhance their formability, extensive research has focused on forming technologies at elevated temperatures, specifically warm forming at around 300℃ and hot forming at approximately 500℃. This study proposes that the formability of aluminum alloy sheets can be significantly enhanced using a multi-stage hot forming technique. The research also investigates whether the strength of the A6061 aluminum alloy, known for its precipitation hardening, can be maintained when formed below the precipitate solid solution temperature. In the experiments, the A6061-T6 sheet underwent heating and rapid cooling between 250 and 500℃. The mechanical properties were evaluated at each stage of the process. The findings revealed that when the initial heat treatment was below 350℃, the strength of the material remained unchanged. However, at temperatures above 400℃, there was a noticeable decrease in strength coupled with an increase in elongation. Conversely, when the secondary heat treatment was conducted at temperatures of 350℃ or lower, the strength remained comparable to that of the initial heat treated material. However, at higher temperatures, a reduction in strength and an increase in elongation were observed.

  • Glucosylation is a well-known approach to improve the solubility, pharmacological, and biological properties of flavonoids, making flavonoid glucosides a target for large-scale biosynthesis. However, the low yield of products coupled with the requirement of expensive UDP-sugars limits the application of enzymatic systems for large-scale. C. glutamicum is a Gram-positive and generally regarded as safe (GRAS) bacteria frequently employed for the large-scale production of amino acids and biofuels. Due to the versatility of its cell factory system and its non-endotoxin producing properties, it has become an attractive system for the industrial-scale biosynthesis of alternate products. Here, we explored the cell factory of C. glutamicum for efficient glucosylation of flavonoids using apigenin as a model flavonoid, with the heterologous expression of a promiscuous glycosyltransferase, YdhE from Bacillus licheniformis and the endogenous overexpression of C. glutamicum genes galU1 encoding UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase and pgm encoding phosphoglucomutase involved in the synthesis of UDP-glucose to create a C. glutamicum cell factory system capable of efficiently glucosylation apigenin with a high yield of glucosides production. Consequently, the production of various apigenin glucosides was controlled under different temperatures yielding almost 4.2 mM of APG1(apigenin-4'-O-β-glucoside) at 25℃, and 0.6 mM of APG2 (apigenin-7-O-β-glucoside), 1.7 mM of APG3 (apigenin-4',7-O-β-diglucoside) and 2.1 mM of APG4 (apigenin- 4',5-O-β-diglucoside) after 40 h of incubation with the supplementation of 5 mM of apigenin and 37℃. The cost-effective developed system could be used to modify a wide range of plant secondary metabolites with increased pharmacokinetic activities on a large scale without the use of expensive UDP-sugars.

  • In this study, ensemble machine learning (ML) models are employed to estimate the hardened properties of Self-Compacting Geopolymer Concrete (SCGC). The input variables affecting model development include the content of the SCGC such as the binder material, the age of the specimen, and the ratio of alkaline solution. On the other hand, the output parameters examined includes compressive strength, flexural strength, and split tensile strength. The ensemble machine learning models are trained and validated using a database comprising 396 records compiled from 132 unique mix trials performed in the laboratory. Diverse machine learning techniques, notably K-nearest neighbours (KNN), Random Forest, and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), have been employed to construct the models coupled with Bayesian optimisation (BO) for the purpose of hyperparameter tuning. Furthermore, the application of nested cross-validation has been employed in order to mitigate the risk of overfitting. The findings of this study reveal that the BO-XGBoost hybrid model confirms better predictive accuracy in comparison to other models. The R2 values for compressive strength, flexural strength, and split tensile strength are 0.9974, 0.9978, and 0.9937, respectively. Additionally, the BO-XGBoost hybrid model exhibits the lowest RMSE values of 0.8712, 0.0773, and 0.0799 for compressive strength, flexural strength, and split tensile strength, respectively. Furthermore, a SHAP dependency analysis was conducted to ascertain the significance of each parameter. It is observed from this study that GGBS, Flyash, and the age of specimens exhibit a substantial level of influence when predicting the strengths of geopolymers.

  • In this study, the formability of AZ31B magnesium alloy sheets was investigated by the analytical and experimental approaches. Tensile tests and limit dome height tests were rallied out at several temperatures between $25^{\circ}C$ and $300^{\circ}C$ to obtain the mechanical properties and forming limit diagram (FLD). The FLD-based criterion considering the strain-path and the blank temperature was used to predict the forming limit in a deep-drawing process of cross-shaped cup by finite element analysis. This criterion proved to be very useful in determining the optimal process conditions such as blank shape, punch velocity, minimum comer radius, fillet size, and so on, through the comparison between FEA and experimental data. In particular, the temperature of each tool that provided the best formability of the blank was determined by coupled temperature-deformation analyses. A practical method that can greatly reduce the forming time by increasing the punch speed during the forming process was suggested.

  • By the in vitro combinatorial mutagenesis, which is a sequential reaction of PCR mutagenesis and in vitro coupled transcription/translation with Escherichia coli S30 extract, S65 and E222 of green fluorescent protein of Aequarea victoria were comprehensively changed to all possible combinations of amino acids, thus totally 400 mutant (including a wild type) proteins were simultaneously produced and their fluorescent properties were analyzed. Although a few mutations had been reported so far at the 222nd position, replacement E222 to all other19 amino acids gave fluorescent signal to the mutants by changing Ser 65 to Ala together. Among the mutants, replacement to G, A, S, Q, H and C gave relatively high fluorescence. The in vitro combinatorial mutagenesis, therefore, has been proved valuable for comprehensive structure-function studies of proteins.

  • Class-F and B resin-rich type insulating tapes are generally used for the ground wall insulations of respective air-cooled and water-cooled stator windings in larger turbine generators. In this paper, their electrical properties coupled with aging times in higher temperature than designed one in normal condition were experimentally investigated and the results of two comparative tests were presented on the existing class-F resin-rich type tape and a developed one after curing. The resin-rich tapes currently used arc composed of six and a half 3-layer sheets that arc structured with mica paper, the top and bottom supports of it respectively, and the epoxy resin to bind them tightly. The results for breakdown voltage and strength on the cured specimens were presented, which were composed of the unaged, the aged accelerated for one, two, and three thousand hours at 180 $^{\circ}C$. The surface and volume resistivities on them were measured and the results are also presented to make a comparative test for the initial electrical characteristics.
