Willingness to pay for eco-friendly products: case of cosmetics

  • Environmental concern has been an important issue for a few decades, and the extent of consumer demand for eco-friendly consumption has been increased. This study seeks to investigate consumers' willingness to pay (WTP) a premium for eco-friendly cosmetics. This study evaluates how much more a consumer is willing to pay for eco-friendly cosmetics and examines significant factors influencing consumers' WTP for eco-friendly cosmetics. Consumers' WTP is measured using four different ecofriendly cosmetics: low-priced skin care cosmetics, low-priced makeup cosmetics, high-priced skin care cosmetics, and high-priced makeup cosmetics. This study uses the contingent valuation method (CVM) to estimate consumer's WTP for eco-friendly cosmetics. Survey questions were designed using both dichotomous choice and payment card method of CVM. Through face to face interviews and on-line surveys, the data were collected from women between 20 and 49 years old residing in Seoul and Kyeonggi area, Korea, in May 2010. A total of 226 questionnaires (132 from interviews and 94 from on-line) were included for the analytical sample in this study. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, T-test and Log-Logit analysis. The findings are as follows: First, the WTP measured by dichotomous choice method was estimated using the Log-Logit analysis. The results showed that the estimated WTP for low-priced skin care cosmetics was 19,152 won, which was 27.7% higher than the reference price, 15,000 won. For low-priced makeup cosmetics, the estimated WTP was 18,524 won, and its green premium was 21.0%. The estimated WTP for high-priced skin care cosmetics was 59,128 won, which was 18.3% higher than the reference price, 50,000 won. For high-priced makeup cosmetics was 57,666 won, and its green premium was 15.3%. Second, the WTP measure by payment card method was estimated using descriptive analysis. The results showed that the respondents were willing to pay 17,955 won for low-priced skin care cosmetics, which was 19.7% higher than the reference price, 15,000 won and 17,595 won for low-priced makeup cosmetics, which was 17.3% higher than the reference price. For high-priced skin care cosmetics, the average WTP was 56,950 won which was 13.9% higher than the reference price, 50,000 won. For high-priced makeup cosmetics, the average WTP was 55,650 won, which was 11.3% higher than the reference price. Overall, the WTP was higher in order of low-priced skin care, low-priced makeup, high-priced skin care, and high-priced makeup. It means that consumers decide degree of premium based on the price and the attributes of eco-friendly products. Third, the findings showed that age, monthly income, and having children or not were statistically significant factors that influenced consumers' willingness to pay for eco-friendly cosmetics. Other explanatory variables such as education, marital status, job, purchase experience of eco-friendly products, and environmental concerns did not show any statistical significance. The major contribution of this study is the investigation of the value of green attributes of the products by using CVM. Unlike most previous researches, this research used two methods of CVM, the dichotomous choice and the payment card, so it enhanced the reliability of research. According to this study, consumers showed price sensitivity when they pay green premium. These findings can be used as useful information to establish marketing strategies for green cosmetics.

  • The influence of SNS platform in the mobile environment has grown greatly. Among the various social networking services(SNS), this study analyzed the question of 311 women to investigate whether any difference exists between reliability of contents information, informativeness and playfulness as well as how attributes of contents information influence user attitude depending on the difference in type of providing information provided by "Innisfree" Cosmetics, the company account of Instagram. According to analysis, first, no difference exists between reliability of contents information, informativeness and playfulness depending on the type of providing information. Second, reliability and the playfulness of contents information influence purchase intention. Third, contents information "informativeness" and "playfulness" influence loyalty. Fourth, the "informativeness" and "playfulness" of contents information influence User Satisfaction. Considering such result, it is confirmed that the type of providing information provided by company does not influence account attributes and the "playfulness" of contents information is significant factor which influences all user attitude.

Chinese female consumers' lifestyle groups and consumer behavior for Korean cosmetics (중국 여성 소비자의 라이프스타일 유형별 한국 화장품 소비행동 비교)

  • The current study aims to segment Chinese female consumers using their lifestyle dimensions in the cosmetics market, and analyze their cosmetics purchasing behavior based on that segmentation. Specifically, lifestyle groups were examined to see if there is any group difference(s) in consumer behavior for Korean cosmetics. Lifestyle groups were examined based on: consumers' demographic characteristics, perceived brand attributes, loyalty toward Korean cosmetics, usage of Korean cosmetics products, preferred stores of shopping for Korean cosmetics, and use of information sources in purchase decisions. An online survey was administered to female consumers who live in Beijing and Shanghai. A total of 493 surveys were used for data analyses. The results of the study were as follows: First, factor analysis revealed 11 significant lifestyle dimensions. Second, using these 11 lifestyle dimensions, cluster analysis was conducted, which revealed four distinct groups of consumers: (1) "timid inactive group," characterized by having low scores in most lifestyle dimensions; (2) "showcase goers," who tend to be highly fashion/appearance-conscious and brand-oriented; (3) "practical buyers," who tend to be price-conscious, sensitive and timid; and (4) "sensible buyers," who enjoy finer meals and wellbeing lifestyles, as well as hardworking in everything and impulse-buy things. Third, consumer behavior of purchasing Korean cosmetics brands were examined; significant differences among the four lifestyle groups were found. The study concludes with a discussion of the results and practical implications.

The Other Side of Green Beauty Consumption -The Effect of Eco-Friendly Claims on Appearance Enhancement Attributes for Makeup- (친환경 뷰티 소비의 이면 -메이크업의 친환경 성분 표시가 지각된 외모 향상 속성에 미치는 영향-)

  • With the rising importance placed on sustainability for brands, a plethora of research addresses consumer responses concerning eco-friendly products. While positive effects of eco-friendly traits on beauty products have been discussed, this study addresses a wide research gap in the makeup category. Based on the goal-attribute theory and the lay theory of ethicality, detrimental effects of eco-friendly ingredient claims on perceived appearance enhancement attributes (AEA) were examined. A between-subject, single-factor (eco-friendly ingredient claims present vs. absent) web-based experimental design tested the effect of conditions on makeup products that emphasized AEA. Results found a negative effect of eco-friendly ingredient claims on perceived AEA, supporting previous literature regarding the 'green gap'. Evidence showed that perceived AEA fully mediated the effect of eco-friendly claims on purchase intention, which was moderated by AEA preference. Interestingly, findings show that the purchase intention of respondents with a near-average preference for AEA was not moderated. Results contribute to preexisting literature by extending the lay theory of ethicality and product function mismatch to the field of makeup. Managerial implications are discussed, including opportunities for eco-friendly makeup products to appeal to alternative benefits.

Impact of Information Attributes of Internet Advertising on Purchase Decisions - Empirical Study on Cosmetics Industry (인터넷 광고의 정보속성이 구매의도에 미치는 영향 - 화장품 소비자를 중심으로)

  • The internet and the information-oriented communities have brought many changes to increase brand power and product sales in many industries. This study investigates the influence of brand preference and information reliability on consumers' purchase decisions. If product information at the internet advertising matches with consumers' previous brand preference, they are more likely to enhance product information reliability after watching the advertising. Such brand preference match through the advertising will increase consumers' intention to purchase. From the results of our experiment, we found that information reliability and memory from the advertising give a positive impact on the intention to purchase when consumers' previous brand preference matches with advertising attributes. Our study suggests that firms need to develop the internet advertising which is closely matched with consumers' preferences.

  • Currently, attentions toward the Chinese market have been growing rapidly. Economical values of China are highly appreciated. The current shift of economical environments in China leads to changes in the way of consumers' consumption. The purpose of this study is to identify the Chinese consumers' brand purchasing behavior according to their lifestyle. Questionnaires developed by researcher were distributed and collected from 118 Chinese consumers living in metropolitan areas of China. In research, five different lifestyles were identified; which are the vogue pursuing group, the social intercourse group, the traditional conservative group, the achievement pursuit group, and the passive stagnated group. These groups differed in the perception of cosmetic prices, purchase motivations, post-acquisitional satisfaction, and their demographics. For example, the vogue pursuing group consumers turned out to consider price as the most important element when they purchase cosmetics, while the social intercourse group valued recommendation from others more. Meanwhile the traditional conservative group and the achievement group each used past experience and attributes as their criterion.

A Research on the Relationship between Duty Free' Locations and Sales of its Product Attributes at Airport : a Case of Departure and On-Arrival Duty Free at Incheon International Airport (공항 면세점 위치와 판매품목별 매출액 간 관계성 연구: 인천국제공항 출국장 및 입국장 면세점 사례를 중심으로)

  • On-arrival duty free will prevent Korean outbound passengers from keeping the duty free items they purchased at the departure during their travel. Most Korean tourists have requested the airport authority to install on-arrival duty free since the grand-opening of Incheon int'l airport. Considering the fierce hub airport competition in the North East Asian region, the Korean government's decision to install on-arrival duty free is regarded as a well-timed intervention. The purpose of the research was to analyze sales correlation based on a comparison of sales of both departure and on-arrival duty free and to propose an administrative implication. Compared to business conglomerates running departure duty free, on-arrival duty free operators, who are small or medium companies, have weakness in product composition, marketing, and merchandising capabilities. According to the analysis, outbound passengers, who purchased fashion accessories and leather products at the departure duty free, tended to purchase cosmetics/perfume or liquor on the arrival duty free. Such complementary purchasing behavior of passengers showed there is barely a negative correlation between departure and on-arrival duty free.

The Effect of Theory of Planned Behavior of Customized Cosmetics According to Selection Attributes on Purchase Satisfaction Behavioral Intention (선택속성에 따른 맞춤형화장품의 계획행동이론이 구매만족행동의도에 미치는 영향)

  • The Government provides a financial assistance to stimulate firm R&D and innovation activities. Previous papers on the impact of public subsidies on firm R&D investments mainly had a focus on an individual policy tool regardless of potential impacts of other policy instruments. This study addresses this gap by examining the effects of policy mix regarding a subsidy and a tax credit. The empirical analyses from fixed effect model using Survey on Technology of SMEs 2015-2017 revealed valuable points. First, policy mix induces more R&D investment of SMEs, which in turn, shows a complementary relationship between two instruments. Second, even if impact of tax credit controlled, subsidy is positively associated with SMEs R&D investment. These findings justify policy mix interventions to promote SME R&D activity. Moreover, grants can be applied as a more useful policy tool for SMEs that are constrained by resources and capabilities.
