  • Lots of researches were gone already about grooving corrosion mechanism of ERW carbon steel pipe. But there is seldom study for water hammer happened by fluid and acceleration of corrosion rate by incresed flow velocity. Therefore, in this study carried out the analysis based on hydrodynamic and fracture mechanics. Analyzed stress that act on a pipe using ANSYS as a program, and also FLUENT and STAR-CD were used for flow phenomenon confirmation. As the result, fatigue failure is happened by water hammer and corrosion rate was increased because of turbulent flow.

  • After etching Al-Cu alloy films using SiCl4/Cl_2/He/CHF3 mixed gas plasma, the corrosion phenomenon at the grain boundary of the etched surface and a passivation layer on the etched surface with an SF6 plasma treatment subsequent to the etching were studied. In Al-Cu alloy system, corrosion occurs rapidly on the etched surface by residual chlorine atoms, and it occurs dominantly at the grain boundaries rather than the crystalline surfaces. To prevent corrosion, the SF6 gas plasma treatment subsequent to etching was carried out. The passivation layer is composed of fluorine-related compounds on the etched Al-Cu surface after the SF6 treatment, and it suppresses effectively corrosion on the surface as the SF6 treatment pressure increases. Corrosion could be suppressed successfully with the SF6 treatment at a total pressure of 300 mTorr. To investigate the reason why corrosion could be suppressed with the SF6 treatment, behaviors of chlorine and fluorine were studied by various analysis techniques. It was also found that the residual chlorine incorporated at the grain boundary of the etched surface accelerated corrosion and could not be removed after the SF6 plasma treatment.

  • Numerical value of correlation between effective parameters in the strength of a structure is as important as its stochastic properties in determining the safety of the structure. In this article investigation is made about the variation of coefficient of correlation between effective parameters in corrosion initiation time of reinforcement and the time of concrete cover cracking in reinforced concrete (RC) structures. Presence of many parameters and also error in measurement of these parameters results in uncertainty in determination of corrosion initiation and the time to crack initiation. In this paper, assuming diffusion process as chloride ingress mechanism in RC structures and considering random properties of effective parameters in this model, correlation between input parameters and predicted time to corrosion is calculated using the Monte Carlo (MC) random sampling. Results show the linear correlation between corrosion initiation time and effective input parameters increases with increasing uncertainty in the input parameters. Diffusion coefficient, concrete cover, surface chloride concentration and threshold chloride concentration have the highest correlation coefficient respectively. Also the uncertainty in the concrete cover has the greatest impact on the coefficient of correlation of corrosion initiation time and the time of crack initiation due to the corrosion phenomenon.

  • The influence of noxious corrosive gas, which is the product of fossil fuel, and the acidic descent material, which becomes the reason for such reaction, on wax which protects the cultural assets, and the habitat factor were researched. It could be viewed that corrosion occurred rapidly due to the acidic descent material, which have the long staying on the material, rather than harmful corrosive gas. Also, it could be figured out that such corrosion began from whitening phenomenon of coated wax. As the acidity increased, more whitening phenomenon occurred, and eventually, it could be found out that whitening effect began due to the acidic descent material, corrosive gas and various 0.1 M acid solution, which lead to the exposure of internal metal, and corrosion occurred. The wax with the greatest resistance to the acidity due to its least changing aspect seemed to be Renaissance wax, except sulfuric acid.

  • Chloride induced reinforcement corrosion is widely accepted to be the most frequent mechanism causing premature degradation of reinforced concrete members, whose economic and social consequences are growing up continuously. Prevention of these phenomena has a great importance in structural design, and modern Codes and Standards impose prescriptions concerning design details and concrete mix proportion for structures exposed to different external aggressive conditions, grouped in environmental classes. This paper focuses on reinforced concrete column section load carrying capacity degradation over time due to chloride induced steel pitting corrosion. The structural element is considered to be exposed to marine environment and the effects of corrosion are described by the time degradation of the axial-bending interaction diagram. Because chlorides ingress and consequent pitting corrosion propagation are both time-dependent mechanisms, the study adopts a time-variant predictive approach to evaluate residual strength of corroded reinforced concrete columns at different lifetimes. Corrosion initiation and propagation process is modelled by taking into account all the parameters, such as external environmental conditions, concrete mix proportion, concrete cover and so on, which influence the time evolution of the corrosion phenomenon and its effects on the residual strength of reinforced concrete columns sections.

  • Deep geological disposal using a multibarrier system is a promising solution for treating high-level radioactive (HLRW) waste. The HLRW canister represents the first barrier for the migration of radionuclides into the biosphere, therefore, the corrosion behavior of canister materials is of significance. In this study, the electrochemical behaviors of SS316L, Ti-Gr.2, Alloy 22, and Cu in naturally aerated KAERI underground research tunnel (KURT) groundwater solutions were examined. The corrosion potential, current, and impedance spectra of the test materials were recorded using electrochemical methods. According to polarization and impedance measurements, Cu exhibits relatively higher corrosion rates and a lower corrosion resistance ability than those exhibited by the other materials in the given groundwater condition. In the anodic dissolution tests, SS316L exposed to the groundwater solution exhibited the most uniform corrosion, as indicated by its surface roughness. This phenomenon could be attributed to the extremely low concentration of chloride ions in KURT groundwater.

  • This paper deals with some characteristics of a nondestructive eddy current detector to measure OPGW(Composite overhead ground wire with optical fiber) corrosion. This detector is designed to automatically run on OPGW and to continuously inspect the corrosion of the line. The impedance of the eddy current coil changing by any corrosion phenomenon of OPGW is analyzed. Several performances of the detector are described and experimental procedures and test results are also given. As a result, it is shown that the implemented detector can be measured some quantitative data for crack, broken wires or severe deteriorations in OPGW. This nondestructive test method would be applied to improve the reliability and efficiency of transmission line in service.

  • The effects of PWHT (poste weld heat treatment) and stress simulating the residual stress during PWHT in weld HAZ of low and high strength steels on corrosion fatigue crack growth were evaluated. The obtained results are summarized as follows. 1. Fatigue crack growth rate of HAZ in air and 3.5% NaCl solution was slower than that of parent due to the signgularity in weld HAZ. 2. In the case of HT-80, 3.5% NaCl solutio nacts to accelerate the crack growth for all specimens, and the sensitivity of as-weld to corrosion environment was the greatest among other PWHT specimens. 3. Corrosion fatigue crack growth of parent, as-weld and PWHT speciments ofr SS41 as well as SM53B was retarded in comparison with the fatigue crack growth in air. 4. There was a tendency that crack growth of PWHT specimens subjected $10kg/mm^2$ was faster than that of PWHT specimens without stress during PWHT. 5. The retardation phenomenon of crack growth in corrosion environment is attributed to the crack branching decreased .DELTA.K due to the corrosion products and multi-cracks.

  • Galvanized steel pipe, copper pipe and stainless steel pipe, which is being used in waterworks piping materials. In case of galvanized steel pipe, the precipitation of a product is being generated due to the pollution of the tap water, a white water phenomenon, and various corrosion reaction because a zinc ion is melted by tap water. And in case of a cupper pipe, many problems which is harm in sanitation appeared because of a inflow of harmfulness substance by a frequent accident of a water leakage. So, to prevent these problems, it is substituted for stainless steel pipe. However, those problems is still occurring because of badness of welding, a problem of a water leakage in connection part, and a increment of construction expenses. Therefore, this research has examined the laying period according to each piping thickness and a corrosion shape according to each laying depth after laying in various soils(sandy loam, loamy, clay loam, clay) using galvanized steel pipe, copper pipe, and stainless steel pipe. That is, we has studied the data which is necessary for a rational method of preserving the quality of water by examining the corrosion properties of piping materials in the soil environment which waterworks piping materials is being used.

  • Corrosion of steel plate is common phenomenon which results in the gradual destruction caused by a wide variety of environments. Corrosion monitoring is the tracking of the degradation progress for a long period of time. Corrosion on steel plate appears as a discoloration and any irregularities on the surface. In this study, we developed a quantitative evaluation method of the rust formed on steel plate by using k-means clustering from the corroded area in a given image. The k-means clustering for automated corrosion detection was based on the GrabCut segmentation and Gaussian mixture model(GMM). Image color of the corroded surface at cut-edge area was analyzed quantitatively based on HSV(Hue, Saturation, Value) color space.
