Seismic-performance Flexural Experiments for Real Scale Piers with Circular Cross-section Considering Aging Effects (노후도를 고려한 실크기 원형단면 교각의 내진성능 휨실험)

  • For old piers constructed when seismic design code had not been developed, lap splices usually exist in plastic hinge region. Corrosion of rebars causes decreasement in cross-sectional area of rebar and deterioration of lap-splice behaviour, thereby reducing the seismic performance of the old piers. In this research, according to these characteristics of old piers, test specimens are designed and manufactured considering rebar corrosion, lap splice, seismic design details, and seismic reinforcement. These effects are investigated through experiments. As a result of these experiment, rebar corrosion as well as lap splice reduces displacement ductility. When seismic design details or steel-plate reinforcement are applied, sufficient displacement ductility is expressed. For non-seismically designed specimens, loosening of the lap splice of transverse rebars caused buckling of longitudinal rebars and crushing of core concrete in plastic hinge region . For seismically designed specimen, area-reducing and untying of transverse rebars due to corrosion of rebars caused buckling of longitudinal rebars and crushing of core concrete.

A Study on The Corrosion Resistance of Concrete Containing Copper Slag (동제련 슬래그 혼입 콘크리트의 부식 저항성에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze steel corrosion resistance of concrete containing copper slag. The specimens were made with normal portland cement and pozzolan materials with various replacement ratio and with W/B ratio ranging from 35% to 55%. Compressive strength, coefficient of chloride diffusion, corrosion area ratio and weight reduction ratio were determinated for the test. The results show that the concrete with pozzolan materials is superior resistant to chloride ions compared to the concrete without pozzolan materials. It was observed that blast furnace slag replacement ratio of 20% gives the best results with respect to chloride ion penetration and corrosion tests and observed that copper slag replacement ratio of 10% gives the seperior resistance compared to normal concrete.

  • With increasing corrosion in RC (Reinforced Concrete) structures, cracks occurred due to corrosion products and bearing load resistance decreased. In this study, corrosion was induced through an accelerated corrosion test (ICM: Impressed Current Method) with 140 hours of duration, and changes in USV (Ultra-Sonic Velocity), flexural failure load, and corrosion weight were evaluated before and after corrosion test. Three levels of cover depth (20 mm, 30 mm, and 40 mm) were considered, and the initial cracking period increased and the rust around steel decreased with increasing cover depth. In addition, the USV linearly decreased with decreasing cover depth and increasing amount of corrosion. In the flexural loading test, the bending capacity decreased by more than 10% due to corrosion, but a clear correlation could not be obtained since the corrosion ratio was small, so that the effect of slip was greater than that of reduced cross-sectional area of steel due to corrosion. As cover depth increased, the produced corrosion amount and USV changed with a clear linear relationship, and the cracking period due to corrosion could be estimated by the gradient of the measured corrosion current.

Effects of Induction Heat Bending Process on Microstructure and Corrosion Properties of ASME SA312 Gr.TP304 Stainless Steel Pipes

  • The usage of bending products recently have increased since many industries such as automobile, aerospace, shipbuilding, and chemical plants need the application of pipings. Bending process is one of the inevitable steps to fabricate the facilities. Induction heat bending is composed of compressive bending process by local heating and cooling. This work focused on the effect of induction heat bending process on the properties of ASME SA312 Gr. TP304 stainless steel pipes. Tests were performed for base metal and bended area including extrados, intrados, crown up, and down parts. Microstructure was analyzed using an optical microscope and SEM. In order to determine intergranular corrosion resistance, Double Loop Electrochemical Potentiokinetic Reactivation (DL-EPR) test and ASTM A262 practice A and C tests were done. Every specimen revealed non-metallic inclusion free under the criteria of 1.5i of the standard and the induction heat bending process did not affect the non-metallic inclusion in the alloys. Also, all the bended specimens had finer grain size than ASTM grain size number 5 corresponding to the grain sizes of the base metal and thus the grain size of the pipe bended by induction heat bending process is acceptable. Hardness of transition start, bend, and transition end areas of ASME SA312 TP304 stainless steel was a little higher than that of base metal. Intergranular corrosion behavior was determined by ASTM A262 practice A and C and DL-EPR test, and respectively step structure, corrosion rate under 0.3 mm/y, and Degree of Sensitization (DOS) of 0.001~0.075% were obtained. That is, the induction heat bending process didn't affect the intergranular corrosion behavior of ASME SA312 TP304 stainless steel.

Evaluation of Corrosion Property of Welding Zone of Stainless Steel by Laser Welding (Laser 용접한 스테인리스강의 용접부위의 부식특성에 관한 평가)

  • Laser welding was carried out on austenitic 304 (STS 304) and 22 APU stainless steels. In this case, the differences between the corrosion characteristics of the welding zones of the two stainless steels were investigated using electrochemical methods. The Vickers hardness values of the weld metal (WM) zones in both cases, the STS 304 and 22 APU stainless steels, showed relatively higher values than those of other welding zones. The corrosion current densities of the heat affected zone (HAZ) of the 22 APU and the base metal (BM) zone of the STS 304 exhibited the highest values compared to the other welding zones. It is generally accepted that when STS 304 stainless steel is welded using a general welding method, intergranular corrosion is often observed at the grain boundary because of its chromium depletion area. However, when laser welding was performed on both the STS 304 and 22 APU stainless steels, no intergranular corrosion was observed at any of the welding zones. Consequently, it is considered that the intergranular corrosion of stainless steel can be controlled with the application of laser welding.

  • The sea of the Korean peninsula has various marine changes, including naval vessels, naval operational aircrafts, air force fighters, coastal airports and airfields. In particular salt directly affected by the marine environment, equipment operating in a high temperature / high speed as the gas turbine is the high temperature corrosion(Hot Corrosion) caused by sulfur components and salinity of the fuel used. When the height of the demister (air intake) is less than 7m, the salinity entering the sea increases and the corrosion increases rapidly. In addition, the weapon systems operating in the East Sea than the West Sea showed a 17% increase in corrosion rate due to the relatively high salinity scattered by saline, wind, and wave. In order to minimize the salinity inflow, it should be operated at more than 13m from the sea to minimize rapid hot corrosion.

  • Due to the rapid development of the industry, the use of iron is increasing rapidly in various industrial fields. Among these iron use areas, problems caused by corrosion of iron are seriously occurring in water-related industries. In particular, as the importance of environmental management has emerged, the water industry market desperately needs to replace aging water infra structure due to corrosion. In order to overcome this problem, research on a method capable of corrosion prevention system is being actively conducted. As the method for corrosion prevention system has various voltages and currents applied depending on the surrounding environment, the demand for an appropriate voltage regulator is increasing rapidly. In particular, as the IOT industry develops, the capacity of corrosion prevention system is increasing by expanding the area in which the method machine operates. Therefore, rectifiers for preventing corrosion are being changed from conventional flyback systems suitable for small capacities to inverter-type rectifiers suitable for large capacities. The inverter-type rectifier has various problems by reducing it to the initial rush current when starting. Therefore, this paper proposes a new starting method that can reduce initial inrush current in inverter-type rectifiers. T he proposed method can secure DC phase voltage for stable operation of the inverter by implementing discontinuous boosting operation using the switch of the inverter. In addition, the excellence of the proposed method was verified through simulations and experiments.

Durability of Various Anti-Corrosive Organic Coatings in Marine Environment for Twelve Years

  • In order to clarify the durability of protective coatings for maritime steel structures, various anti-corrosive organic coated steel samples were exposed for twelve years in semitropical marine environment at Miyakojima Island, Okinawa, JAPAN. Samples were various organic coated steel pipes, 4.0 m in length and 150 mm in diameter. While the bare steel pipe entirely corroded in 4.5 mm thickness in four and half years, these organic coated steel pipes exhibited protective appearances after twelve-year-exposure except for the defect in the coatings. Polyethylene (PE) lining pipe exhibited a good protective performance. Urethane painted pipe was also good but some barnacles stuck to its surface. A combination of petrolatum tape and FRP cover showed sufficient corrosion resistance for steel surface. The correlation in results between exposure and laboratory acceleration test was examined. It was found that salt spray test (SST) results corresponded to rusted area of scratched portion and that adhesion change of coating layer corresponded to the rotating immersion test result. Among the on-site measured data, volume resistivity is utilized for the index of corrosion protection performance of organic coating.

Failure Analysis of Condenser Fin Tubes of Package Type Air Conditioner for Navy Vessel (함정용 패키지 에어콘 응축기 핀튜브(Cu-Ni 70/30) 누설파괴 원인 분석)

  • In 2015, a fin tube (Cu-Ni 70/30 alloy) of package type heat exchanger for navy vessel was perforated through the wall which led to refrigerant leakage. This failure occurred after only one year since its installation. In this study, cause of the failure was determined based on available documents, metallographic studies and computational fluid dynamics simulation conducted on this fin tube. The results showed that dimensional gap between inserted plastic tube and inside wall of fin tube is the cause of the swirling turbulent stream of sea water. As a result of combination of swirling turbulence and continuing collision of hard solid particles in sea water, erosion corrosion has begun at the end of inserted plastic tube area. Crevice corrosion followed later in the crevice between the outer wall of plastic tube and inner wall of fin tube. It was found that other remaining tubes also showed the same corrosion phenomena. Thorough inspection and prompt replacement will have to be accomplished for the fin tubes of the same model heat exchanger.
