  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship of uncertainty, hope and quality of life in patients with breast cancer. Method: The subjects of the study were 113 breast cancer patients treated at 3 university hospitals in Daegu and Busan from June 1 to September 30, 2003. Uncertainty was measured by the Mishel Uncertainty in Il1ness Scale (MUIS), Hope was measured by Nowotny's Hope Scale, and quality of life by Ro's Korean Quality of Life(QOL). Data was analyzed with the SPSS program by t-test, ANOVA, Spearman's rank correlation and Multiple Regression Analysis. Result: The scores of uncertainty were negatively correlated with hope and QOL(all p's<0.05). Uncertainty revealed that there was a negative correlation among subitems of hope such as confidence, relationship with others, possibility of future, and inner motivation(r=-.333, p=.000; r=-.230, p=.015; r=-.260, p=.006; r=-.291, p=.003). Uncertainty also showed a negative correlation among subitems of QOL such as emotional status, self esteem, and relationship with family(r=-.29, p=.004; r=-.326, p=.000; r=-.197, p=.044), whereas hope revealed a positive correlation among subitems of QOL such as emotional status, self esteem, relationship with neighbor, and relationship with family(r=.243, p=.011; r=.487, p=.000; r=.29, p=.001; r=.29, p=.001). The score of uncertainty was low in graduate school students and subjects using problem solving as a coping method. However, the score of hope was high in college students and subjects using a problem solving method, and the score of QOL was high in professionals. Conclusion: Based on the study results, breast cancer patients experienced living with uncertainty and maintaining hope. Thus the study's findings can be useful in directing a comprehensive nursing care plan to improve QOL of breast cancer patients.

  • This was designed to identify the relationship of perceived stress, ways of coping, and stress response in student nurses. The subjects of this study were 320 student nurses from two universities and three junior colleges located in Seoul. The data were collected from November 28 to December 10, 1997 by a questionnaire survey method. The instruments for this study were the perceived stress scale developed by Levenstein(1993), ways of coping scale developed by lazarus & Folkman (1984), and the stress response scale developed by Choi(1991). The data were analyzed by SAS program, using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, and ANOVA. The results are summarized as follows : 1. The mean score for the level of perceived stress was 2.55. 2. The mean score for the level of problem oriented coping was 1.61 and the mean score for the level of emotional oriented coping was 1.37. 3. The mean score for the level of stress response was 3.74. Stress was classified into nine factors and the order of scoring for the most frequent was ; assignments(3.98), as a nurse(3.97), interpersonal relationship(3.88). 4. The relationship between perceived stress and stress response revealed a positive significant correlation(r=0.23, p=0.0001) 5. The relationship between emotional oriented coping and stress response revealed a positive significant correlation(r=0.22, p=0.0001). 6. The relationship between perceived stress and emotional oriented coping revealed a positive significant correlation(r=0.13, p=0.020). In conclusion, this study revealed that the level of perceived stress and ways of coping were important factors influencing the stress response of student nurses. Therefore, in consideration of perceived stress, ways of coping should be included in the development of a stress management program for student nurses. Further research with an expanded area and subjects is recommended.

  • Previous studies have investigated a between-category relationship of multiple acoustic cues for a laryngeal contrast by examining the distributions of VOT, f0 and H1-H2. The current study examined within-category correlations between cues comprising stops by Korean- and English-speaking adults and children to understand how children master the internal structure of stop phonation types in two languages. Word-initial stops were collected from about 70 children and 15 adults speaking English and Korean, and were analyzed in terms of VOT, f0 and H1-H2 to compute correlation coefficients. Findings in adults' productions included a gender-differentiated cue-correlation pattern associated with H1-H2 in Korean tense stops and a trading relationship between f0 and VOT in Korean lax and aspirated stops and English voiced and voiceless stops. Children did not necessarily have adult-like cue-correlation patterns even in early-acquired categories, suggesting that the mastery of intra-category structure of phonation type might occur later than inter-category structure.

  • The NLCCA has been applied to analyze the East Asia sea surface temperature (SST) and Korea monthly precipitation, where the eight leading PCs of the SST and the eight PCs of the precipitation during 1973-2007 were inputs to an NLCCA model. The first NLCCA mode is plotted in the PC spaces of the Korea precipitation and the world SST present a curve linking the nonlinear relationship between the first three leading PCs of Korea precipitation and world SST forthright. The correlation coefficient between canonical variate time series u and v is 0.8538 for the first NLCCA mode. And there are some areas' climate variability have higher relationship with Korea precipitation, especially focus on the north of East Sea' climate variability have represented the higher canonical correlation with Korea precipitation, with the correlation coefficient is 0.871 and 0.838. Likewise in Korea, most stations display similarly uniform distributing characteristic and less difference, in particular the inshore stations have display identical distributing characteristic. In correlation variables' scores, the fluctuation and variation trend are also seasonal oscillation with high frequency.

  • Objectives : This study was designed to clarify population-social characteristics that influence the utilization patterns of hospitalized patients in a traditional korean hospital, thereby providing clinical data which would help further improvements of traditional korean medical service in particular the Acupuncture and Moxibustion. Methods : We investigated population-social characteristics and annual utilization patterns of all patients who were hospitalized for more than 24 hours in a Korean Medical Hospital from January 2005 to December 2014. The obtained data were recorded in the EMR chart and statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 21.0. Additionally, data from the patients admitted to the department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion were analyzed separately. Results : 1. All inpatients had a significant annual difference in age, gender, hospitalized department, and disease code annually but not in re-hospitalization number. Inpatients of the department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion also varied in their age, gender, and disease code annually, but not in re-hospitalization number. 2. Pearson correlation analysis on all inpatients showed that the mean days of hospital treatments had a negative correlation with all variables except medical care insurance. Total cost, cost per day per person and recuperation cost had a positive correlation with all variables except medical care insurance. There was no meaningful relationship between nonrecuperation cost and the variables. 3. Stepwise multiple regression analysis on all inpatients showed that the mean days of hospital treatments had a negative correlation with all variables except automobile insurance. The total hospitalization costs had a positive correlation with both general insurance and medical care insurance. Cost per day per person and recuperation cost had a positive correlation with the females. There was no meaningful relationship between non-recuperation cost and the variables. 4. Pearson correlation analysis on inpatients of the department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion inpatients showed that the mean days of hospital treatments had a positive correlation with all variables except general insurance and automobile insurance. Total cost and recuperation cost had a positive correlation with all variables except medical care insurance, and cost per day per person had a positive correlation with females and general insurance. There was no meaningful relationship between non-recuperation cost and the variables. 5. Stepwise multiple regression analysis on inpatients of the department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion inpatients, the mean days of hospital treatments, total cost, cost per day per person and recuperation cost had a positive correlation with general insurance. • The generalized canonical correlation biplot is a 2-dimensional plot to graphically investigate the relationship between more than three sets of variables and the relationship between observations and variables. Recently, Choi and Choi (2010) investigated the relationship physique, physical fitness and basic skill factors of Korea Tennis Association(KTA) players of using this biplot; however we consider the set of covariate variables affecting the linearly on two sets of variables. In this case, if we apply the generalized canonical correlation biplot, we cannot clearly interpret the other two sets of variables due to the effect of the set of covariate variables. Moreover, Yeom and Choi (2011) provided partial canonical correlation analysis that removed the linear effect of the set of covariate variables on two sets of variables. In addition, Procrustes analysis is a useful tool for comparing shape between configurations. In this study, we will investigate the relationship between physical fitness and basic skill factors of KTA players of using a partial canonical correlation biplot and Procrustes analysis. We compare shapes and shape variabilities for the generalized, partial and simple canonical correlation biplots.

  • In this study, we analyzed the gene expression data of Saccharomyces cerevisiae obtained from Holstege et al. 1998 to understand the relationship between expression level and nucleotide sequence of a gene. First, the correlation between gene expression and percent composition of each type of nucleotide was computed. It was observed that nucleotide 'G' and 'C' show positive correlation (r ${\geq}$ 0.15), 'A' shows negative correlation (r ${\approx}$ -0.21) and 'T' shows no correlation (r ${\approx}$ 0.00) with gene expression. It was also found that 'G+C' rich genes express more in comparison to 'A+T' rich genes. We observed the inverse correlation between composition of a nucleotide at genome level and level of gene expression. Then we computed the correlation between dinucleotides (e.g. AA, AT, GC) composition and gene expression and observed a wide variation in correlation (from r = -0.45 for AT to r = 0.35 for GT). The dinucleotides which contain 'T' have wide range of correlation with gene expression. For example, GT and CT have high positive correlation and AT have high negative correlation. We also computed the correlation between trinucleotides (or codon) composition and gene expression and again observed wide range of correlation (from r = -0.45 for ATA r = 0.45 for GGT). However, the major codons of a large number of amino acids show positive correlation with expression level, but there are a few amino acids whose major codons show negative correlation with expression level. These observations clearly indic ate the relationship between nucleotides composition and expression level. We also demonstrate that codon composition can be used to predict the expression of gene in a given condition. Software has been developed for calculating correlation between expression of gene and codon usage.
