  • $Mg_2$$SiO_4$: Dy, Tb pellets were made by using a sintering process, including pressing and heat treatment. In the present study, the optimum parameters of the sintering for the $Mg_2$$SiO_4$: Dy, Tb pellets obtained such as the pressing pressure, the sintering temperature and the sintering time were in terms of thermoluminescence. Experimental results showed that the main peak of the glow curve for $Mg_2$$SiO_4$: Dy, Tb thermoluminescence dosimeter was clearly correlated with the energy of the UV and with the grain size. The intensity of the TL glow curve increased and its main peak position shifted to lower temperature with increasing UV irradiation time.

  • The previous work(Cheong et al., 2006) where the characteristics of acoustic emissions of wind turbines has been investigated according to the methods of power regulation, has showed that the acoustic power of wind turbine using the stall control for power regulation is more correlated with the wind speed than that using the pitch control. In this paper, basically extending this work, the noise generation characteristics of large modern upwind wind turbines are experimentally indentified according to the power regulation methods. To investigate the noise generation mechanisms, the distribution of noise sources in the rotor plane is measured by using the beam-forming measurement system(B&K 7768, 7752, WA0890) consisting of 48 microphones. The array results for the 660 kW wind turbine show that all noise is produced during the downward movement of the blades. This result show good agreement with the theoretical result using the empirical formula with the parameters: the convective amplification; trailing edge noise directivity; flow-speed dependence. This agreement implies that the trailing edge noise is dominant over the whole frequency range of the noise from the 660 kW wind turbine using the pitch control for power regulation.

  • The densities and viscosities of 2-bromopropane-methanol binary mixtures had been determined using an digital vibrating U-tube densimeter and Ubbelohde capillary viscometer respectively from (298.15 to 318.15) K. The dependence of densities and viscosities on temperature and concentration had been correlated. The excess molar volume and the excess viscosity of the binary system were calculated from the experimental density and viscosity data. The excess molar volumes were related to compositions by polynomial regression and regression parameters and total RMSD deviations were obtained; the excess viscosities was related to compositions by Redlich-Kister equation and regression coefficients and total RMSD deviation of the excess viscosity for 2-bromopropane and methanol binary system were obtained. The results showed that the model agreed very well with the experimental data.

  • Densities (${\rho}$), Viscosities (${\eta}$) and ultrasonic speeds (u) of pure acetophenone (AP), propiophenone (PP), $p$-methyl acetophenone ($p$-MeAP), $p$-chloroacetophenone ($p$-ClAP) and those of their binary mixtures with $N$-ethyl aniline ($N$-EA) as a common component, were measured at 303.15 K over the entire composition range. These experimental data were used to calculate the excess volume $V^E$, deviation in ultrasonic speeds ${\Delta}u$, isentropic compressibility $K_s$, intermolecular free length $L_f$, acoustic impedance Z, deviations in isentropic compressibility ${\Delta}K_s$, deviation in viscosity ${\Delta}{\eta}$ and excess Gibbs free energy of activation of viscous flow ($G^{*E}$) at all mole fractions of $N$-ethyl aniline. These parameters, especially excess functions, are found to be quite sensitive towards the intermolecular interactions between component molecules. Theoretical values of viscosity of the binary mixtures were calculated using different empirical relations and theories. The relative merits of these relations and theories were discussed. The experimental results were correlated by using the polynomial proposed by Redlich-Kister equation.

  • The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether correlations exist between balance and impact velocity, angular position, and maximum velocity of a club during drive swing. Twelve skilled golfers were recruited in this study. They were asked to perform ten swing trials and two trials were selected for analysis. Balance parameters were calculated via the force platform while kinematic variables were determined by using the Qualisys system. The results of the present study demonstrated that the average of COP velocity was faster in the medio-lateral direction rather than the anterio-posterior direction. Also, left foot's COP velocity and free torque were greater than the right foot's before impact. The range of the right foot's COP in the anterio-posterior direction before impact were correlated with the club velocity and angular position at impact. There was a negative correlation between the left foot's COP velocity before the impact and the velocity at impact. Additionally, the range and RMS of the left foot's free torque affected on the club angular position at impact and the maximum velocity at release, respectively. Finally, a negative correlation existed between the range of the right foot's free torque after the impact and club's maximum velocity at release.

  • The purpose of this study is to analysis pollutant loading of upper Nakdong River basin according to the variation of discharge. The correlation between discharge and pollutant concentration and between discharge and pollutant loading were analyzed by statistical method, respectively. Regression equation of pollutant loading and discharge was represented as $L=_aQ^b$ in which L = pollutant loading(kg/day), and b = regression coefficients, and Q = discharge($m^3/day$). The correlation coefficient of study area was in range of 0.8428 to 0.9935. The SS was the highest b value 1.2856~1.7730 among water quality parameters because the pollutant loading of SS was much affected by flow. Additionally, the applicability of the regression equations was verified by comparing predicted results with observed value. The correlation coefficient of verification was in range of 0.8983 to 0.9987 and NSEC was in range of 0.7018 to 0.9960. Therefore the pollutant loading was good correlated with discharge. The main result will be used as basic data for water quality management and design of environment fundamental facilities.

  • Parameters associated with solar minimum have been studied to relate them to solar activity at solar maximum so that one could possibly predict behaviors of an upcoming solar cycle. The number of active days has been known as a reliable indicator of solar activity around solar minimum. Active days are days with sunspots reported on the solar disk. In this work, we have explored the relationship between the sunspot numbers at solar maximum and the characteristics of the monthly number of active days. Specifically, we have statistically examined how the maximum monthly sunspot number of a given solar cycle is correlated with the slope of the linear relationship between monthly sunspot numbers and the monthly number of active days for the corresponding solar cycle. We have calculated the linear correlation coefficient r and the Spearman rank-order correlation coefficient $r_s$ for data sets prepared under various conditions. Even though marginal correlations are found, they turn out to be insufficiently significant (r ~ 0.3). Nonetheless, we have confirmed that the slope of the linear relationship between monthly sunspot numbers and the monthly number of active days is less steep when solar cycles belonging to the "Modern Maximum" are considered compared with rests of solar cycles. We conclude, therefore, that the slope of the linear relationship between monthly sunspot numbers and the monthly number of active days is indeed dependent on the solar activity at its maxima, but that this simple relationship should be insufficient as a valid method to predict the following solar activity amplitude.

  • A molecular imprinted polymer (MIP) using (+)catechin ((+)C) as a template and acrylamide (AM) as a functional monomer was prepared. Acetonitrile was used as the porogen with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as the crosslinker and 2,2'-azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) as the initiator. The adsorption isotherms in the MIP were measured and the parameters of the equilibrium isotherms were estimated by linear and nonlinear regression analyses. The linear equation for original concentration and adsorpted concentrations was then expressed, and the adsorption equilibrium data were correlated into Langmuir, Freundlich, quadratic, and Langmuir Extension isotherm models. The mixture compounds of (+)C and epicatechin (EC) show competitive adsorption on specific binding sites of the (+)catechin-MIP. The adsorption concentrations of (+)C, epicatechin (EC), epicatechin gallate (ECG), and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), on the (+)catechin-molecular imprinted polymer were compared. Through the analysis, the (+)catechin-molecular imprinted polymer showed higher adsorption ability than blank polymer which was synthesized molecular imprinted polymer without (+)catechin. Furthermore, the competitive Langmuir isotherms were applied to the mixture compounds of (+)C and EC.

  • This paper considers the acoustical characteristics of the mechanical valve employed in the Korean type Artificial Heart. $Bj\"{o}rk-Shiley$ tilting disc valve was chosen for the study and acoustic measurements were performed for the artificial heart operated in a mock circulation system as well as implanted to an animal as a Bi Ventricular Assist Device (BVAD). In the mock system, three different conditions of the valve were examined which were normal, damaged (torn off), pseudothrombus attached. Microphone measurements for the BVAD were carried out at a regular time interval for 5 days after the implantation operation. Of the recorded acoustic emissions from the artificial heart, click sounds mainly originated from the valves were further analyzed using Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) for estimating their spectral properties. It was shown that the spectral peaks below 4 kHz and the optimal order number for MUSIC, equivalent to the number of the spectral component, might be the key parameters which were highly correlated to the physiological states of the valve like the mechanical damage of the valve or the formation of thrombus on the valves.

  • Statistical analysis on the measured responses of a suspension bridge deck (Law, et al. 2007) show that vibration response at the first torsional mode of the structure has a significant increase at and beyond the critical wind speed for vortex shedding as noted in the wind tunnel tests on a sectional model. This paper further analyzes the measured responses of the structure when under typhoon conditions for any possible vortex shedding events. Parameters related to the lifting force in such a possible event and the vibration amplitudes are estimated with a single-degree-of-freedom model of the system. The spatial correlation of vortex shedding along the bridge span is also investigated. Possible vortex shedding events are found at both the first torsional and second vertical modes with the root-mean-square amplitudes comparable to those predicted from wind tunnel tests. Small negative stiffness due to wind effects is observed in isolated events that last for a short duration, but the aerodynamic damping exhibits either positive or negative values when the vertical angle of wind incidence is beyond ${\pm}10^{\circ}$. Vibration of the bridge deck is highly correlated in the events at least in the middle one-third of the main span.
