Purpose: The incomplete reduction of the sesamoid has lately been issued as cause for recurrence. In this study, we analysed factors that may influence reduction of sesamoid. Materials and Methods: The study consists of 50 cases operated by single surgeon. Eighteen cases were done by proximal chevron osteotomy, and 32 cases were done by scarf osteotomy. Hallux valgus (HV) angle and intermetatarsal (IM) angle were measured before and three months after the surgery. Sesamoid position (SP) was classified according to Hardy and Clapham grade system. Results: After the proximal chevron osteotomy, the correction of the mean HV angle was $19.5^{\circ}$, and IM angle was $6.2^{\circ}$. SP was changed from 5.6 to 3.4 grade. After the Scarf osteotomy, the correction of the mean HV angle was 25 degree, and IM angle was $9^{\circ}$. SP was changed from 5.5 to 2.8 grade. There was difference of sesamoid's correction between two different method of surgery (p=0.127). However, better correction of sesamoid was witnessed with bigger correction angle regardless of method of surgery (p=0.002, 0.001). Conclusion: We believe surgical method do not effect sesamoid's correction but more correction angle can result in better correction of sesamoid position.
Purpose: To establish the methods for sinogram formation and correction in order to appropriately apply the filtered backprojection (FBP) reconstruction algorithm to the data acquired using PET scanner with multiple scintillation crystal layers. Materials and Methods: Formation for raw PET data storage and conversion methods from listmode data to histogram and sinogram were optimized. To solve the various problems occurred while the raw histogram was converted into sinogram, optimal sampling strategy and sampling efficiency correction method were investigated. Gap compensation methods that is unique in this system were also investigated. All the sinogram data were reconstructed using 20 filtered backprojection algorithm and compared to estimate the improvements by the correction algorithms. Results: Optimal radial sampling interval and number of angular samples in terms of the sampling theorem and sampling efficiency correction algorithm were pitch/2 and 120, respectively. By applying the sampling efficiency correction and gap compensation, artifacts and background noise on the reconstructed image could be reduced. Conclusion: Conversion method from the histogram to sinogram was investigated for the FBP reconstruction of data acquired using multiple scintillation crystal layers. This method will be useful for the fast 20 reconstruction of multiple crystal layer PET data.

In this paper, we were to investigate effect of correction to muscle imbalance in lower limbs according to reduction of weight bearing methods of four point of horizontal shaft using two-belt treadmill. Participants were divided to two group according to each ten peoples who have difference of muscle function in left and right legs over 20%. Experiment progressed forty minutes a day three days a week, total four weeks and we estimated the maximal peak torque and average power for testing joint torque in hip, knee and ankle. The results showed that the correction effect of muscle imbalance to the maximal muscle strength was the most effective in hip joint. Also in knee joint, correction effect of muscular reaction was the most effective too. We thought that reduction of weight bearing methods could be positive effect to correct muscle imbalance in lower limbs.

Background Many methods have been proposed for the correction of sunken upper eyelids. These methods include surgical treatments, such as micro-fat, dermofat, or fascia-fat grafts, or the use of alloplastic materials. Here, we present our experience of sunken upper eyelid correction involving the simple addition of anchoring the central fat pad to the medial fat pad during upper blepharoplasty. Methods We performed 74 cases of upper blepharoplasty with sunken upper eyelid correction between October 2013 and September 2014. The lateral portion of the central fat pad was partially dissected to facilitate anchoring. The medial fat pad was gently exposed and then pulled out to facilitate anchoring. After the rotation of the dissected lateral portion of the central fat pad by $180^{\circ}$ to the medial side, it was anchored spreading to the medial fat pad. Photographs taken at 6 months postoperatively were presented to three physicians for objective assessment. Of the 74 patients, 54 patients followed at 6 months postoperatively were included in this retrospective, objective assessment. Results Sunken eyelids were effectively corrected in 51 of the 54 patients, but 3 had minimal effect because preaponeurotic fat pads had been removed during previous upper blepharoplasty. In addition to correcting sunken eyelids, lateral bulging was corrected and a better definition of the lateral portion of upper lid creases was obtained. Conclusions Anchoring the central fat pad to the medial fat pad provides an effective means of correcting sunken upper eyelids during upper blepharoplasty.

A simple calculation tool for added resistance in waves is developed to utilize for initial design or embedded module for navigation support system. In order to select an appropriate calculation method for added resistance in waves, three methods (drift method, integrated pressure method, radiated energy method) based on strip method are applied to Wigley I and KVLCC2. The methods for added resistance in waves give the underestimated results because it is difficult to consider nonlinear effects due to reflected wave. We apply asymptotic (Faltinsen's method) and empirical formula (NMRI's method) to improve the accuracy for short wave length region. In comparison with experimental results, the combination of radiated energy method and short wave correction method of NMRI is the most reasonable. However, a simple sum of results calculated by two methods gives rise to the overestimation of added resistance for short wave length region because added resistance of radiated energy method exits in total reflection region. To overcome this problem, modified radiated energy method is proposed using correction coefficient defined by reflection coefficient of NMRI's method. Finally, added resistance in regular waves is composed of added resistance of modified radiated energy method and that of short wave correction method of NMRI. Estimated added resistance in regular waves is validated by comparison with experimental results of other research groups.

Purpose: The present study aimed at image processing methods for automatic cell pattern recognition and morphological analysis for tissue engineering applications. The primary aim was to ascertain the novel algorithm of adaptive brightness correction from microscopic images for use as a potential image analysis. Methods: General microscopic image of cells has a minor problem which the central area is brighter than edge-area because of the light source. This may affect serious problems to threshold process for cell-number counting or cell pattern recognition. In order to compensate the problem, we processed to find the central point of brightness and give less weight-value as the distance to centroid. Results: The results presented that microscopic images through the brightness correction were performed clearer than those without brightness compensation. And the classification of mixed cells was performed as well, which is expected to be completed with pattern recognition later. Beside each detection ratio of hBMSCs and HeLa cells was 95% and 92%, respectively. Conclusions: Using this novel algorithm of adaptive brightness correction could control the easier approach to cell pattern recognition and counting cell numbers.

Background and Purpose : Standardized uptake value(SUV) has been used as a quantitative index for differentiating benign and malignant tumors with F-18-FDG PET In this study, we produced whole body parametric images of SUV(WBPIS) by body weight normalization, and validated the values by comparison with SUV's calculated with regional scans. Subjects and Methods : Whole body scans were followed by regional scans sequentially on 23 patients. In whole body study, transmission and emission scans were acquired for 2 minutes and 6 minutes for each bed position, respectively. In regional study, transmission and emission scans were acquired for 20 minutes. Measured and segmented/ smoothed attenuation correction were applied using these 2 min transmission scans in whole body studies. The effects of attenuation correction on SUVs were evaluated quantitatively using F-18 filled cylindrical phantom. The mean and peak SUVs obtained from WBPIS were compared with SUVs of the regional scans. Results : In phantom studies, with any method of attenuation correction using regional or whole body studies of phantom, SUVs were nearly consistent. In whole body scan, SUV obtained using measured attenuation correction method was a little higher than SUV of regional scan. SUV obtained using segmented/smoothed attenuation correction method was a little lower. In patient studies, WBPIS using segmented/smoothed attenuation correction method was much smoother and more readable. SUVs of WBPIS obtained with both methods of attenuation correction were well correlated with SUVs of regional scans(r=0.9). SUVs of WBPIS with measured attenuation correction method were 5% lower than SUVs of regional scans. SUVs of WBPIS with segmented/smoothed attenuation correction method were 10% lower than SUVs of regional scans. The differences of SUVs of WBPIS by the two attenuation correction methods were relatively small compared with the possible differences derived from biological characteristics of tumors. Conclusion : We concluded that WBPIS could be useful in the quantification of tumor as well as in localization of whole body lesions, which were often outside the field of view in regional scan. WBPIS made using segmented/smoothed attenuation correction method could be used in clinical routines and SUVs from attenuation corrected F-18-FDG PET could be used interchangeably with SUVs of regional studies.
In Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS), there are three imaging methods of target localization, such as digital subtraction Angiography (DSA), computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Especially, DSA and MR images have a distortion effect generated by each modality. In this research, image properties of DSA were studied. A first essential condition in SRS is an accurate information of target locations, since high dose used to treat a patient may give a complication on critical organ and normal tissue. Hut previous localization program did not consider distortion effect which was caused by image intensifier (II) of DSA. A neurosurgeon could not have an accurate information of target locations to operate a patient. In this research, through distortion correction, we tried to calculate accurate target locations. We made a grid phantom to correct distortion, and a target phantom to evaluate localization algorithm. The grid phantom was set on the front of II, and DSA images were obtained. Distortion correction methods consist of two parts: 1. Bilinear transform for geometrical correction and bilinear interpolation for gray level correction. 2. Automatic detection method for calculating locations of grid crosses, fiducial markers, and target balls. Distortion was corrected by applying bilinear transform and bilinear interpolation to anterior-posterior and left-right image, and locations of target and fiducial markers were calculated by the program developed in this study. Localization errors were estimated by comparing target locations calculated in DSA images with absolute locations of target phantom. In the result, the error in average with and without distortion correction is $\pm$0.34 mm and $\pm$0.41 mm respectively. In conclusion, it could be verified that our localization algorithm has an improved accuracy and acceptability to patient treatment.
Purpose: To evaluate the results and effectiveness of distal chevron osteotomy combined with lateral soft tissue release for the correction of hallux valgus deformity. Materials and Methods: 31 patients who underwent distal chevron osteotomy with lateral soft tissue release between July 2002 and June 2003, were analyzed in terms of hallux valgus angle, intermetatarsal angle, subluxation of sesamoid, AOFAS score and the occurrence of avascular necrosis of the first metatarsal head. Results: The mean amount of the correction of hallux valgus angle was $26.3^{\circ}$. The mean amount of the correction of intermetatarsal angle was $6.6^{\circ}$. The mean amount of the correction of sesamoid subluxation was 1.2 points. The mean improvement of AOFAS score was 25.8 points. Avascular necrosis of the first metatarsal head was not found in any cases. Conclusion: For correction of hallux valgus deformity, distal chevron osteotomy with lateral soft tissue release showed improvement of hallux valgus angle, sesamoid subluxation and AOFAS score with no evidence of avascular necrosis of the first metatarsal head.

Purpose: A meningoencephalocele is a congenital malformation involving herniation of the meninges and cerebral tissue through a defect in the skull. For the patient with frontoethmoidal meningoencephalocele with hypertelorism, the removal of the meningoencephalocele without correction of the combined hypertelorism is not enough for getting a good cosmetic appearance. Correction of the hypertelorism is needed for cosmetic problem. We experienced a case of simultaneous correction of frontoethmoidal meningoencephalocele with hypertelorism. Methods: The meningoencephalocele was removed and the hypertelorism was corrected by central segment technique. The bone defects were filled with autogenous bone dusts. And the nose was reconstructed by a calvarial bone graft. Results: The patient had a good cosmetic appearance without any neurological complications without serious complications. Conclusion: We experienced a case of simultaneous correction of frontoethmoidal meningoencephalocele with hypertelorism. And a brief review of related literatures is given.
