A Study on the Vowel Duration of the Buckeye Corpus (벅아이 코퍼스의 모음 길이 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to assess the vowel property by examining the vowel duration of the American English vowles found in the Buckeye corpus[6]. The vowel durations were analyzed in terms of various linguistic factors including the number of syllables of the word containing the vowel, the location of the vowel in a word, types of stress, function versus content word, the word frequency in the corpus and the speech rate calculated from the three consecutive words. The findings from this work agreed mostly with those from earlier studies, but with some exceptions. The relationship between the speech rate and the vowel duration proved non-linear.

  • The purpose of this study is to extract the first two vowel formant frequencies of the forty speakers from the Seoul corpus[8] and to compare them by the age and sex. The results showed that the vowel formants showed similar patterns between male and female speakers. All the vowels in each age group and all the age groups in each vowel had main effects on either of the formant frequencies. Whereas in English, the vowel space of the older age group moved slightly to the upper right side relative to the younger group, the location of the vowel spaces of the Korean vowels were not as consistent.

  • This study focused on the meaning of 'educational philosophy' by the method of corpus analysis. There is the difference of meaning on educational philosophy between professional researchers and publics. This semantic phenomenon implies that the image acoustics of 'educational philosophy' are not matched between two groups. This study, which originated from Saussure's linguistics theory, examined the semantics of educational philosophy in the . Unlike philosophical inquiry on education, the definition of educational philosophy, the general public use 'educational philosophy' like the connotation of secret of successful learning and child nurturing. Given the power of the media and the mass, these tendency could affect the meaning and definition of educational philosophy. Professional researchers should investigate these acoustic image from the sense of linguistic and educational approaches. These researches could contribute to clarify descriptive and normative meaning of the educational philosophy.

A Study on the Fine Structural Changes of Porcine Ovarian Follicles during Atresia (돼지 난소내 여포의 폐쇄에 따른 미세구조의 변화에 관한 연구)

  • This experiment has been done in order to study the correlation between the ultrastructure changes and the atresia phenomenon of the follicles in porcine ovary. The ovaries were assorted according to the presence or absence of corpus luteum. Thereafter, the follicles were classified into normal, pyknotic, necrotic and cystic groups by atretic characteristics on the histological observation, and then their ultrastructures were examined with an electron microscope. The results were as followings. 1. In normal group, granulosa cells represented the ultrastructural characteristics of protein-synthesizing cells. Since the initiation of atresia, the line structure of granulosa cells showed many of the characteristic features of steroid-secreting cells, followed by gradual pyknosis. 2. In necrotic group of the ovary without corpus luteum, the theca interns became hypertrophic and displayed the ultrastructural features of active steroidsecreting cells. But this phenomenon was not seen in the follicles of the ovary with corpus luteum. 3. Degenerative changes of cumulus cells were similar to those of granulosa cells, and the degenerating oocytes showed the degeneration of cellular organelles, cytoplasmic vacuolization and disappearance of microvilli on the surface. The degeneration of granulosa cells tended to procede that of oocytecumulus complex in the follicles of the ovary having no corpus luteum, but this tendency was reversed in the case of presence of corpus luteum. In My Opinion: Modality in Japanese EFL Learners' Argumentative Essays

  • This study seeks to add to the current understanding of learners' use of modality in argumentative writing. A learner corpus of argumentative essays on four topics was created and compared to native English speaker data from the International Corpus Network of Asian Learners of English (ICNALE). The relationship between learners' use of modal devices (MDs) and the devices' appearance in the school's curriculum was also examined. The results showed that learners relied on a very narrow range of MDs compared to those in previous studies. The frequency of use of MDs varied based on the topic and did not seem to be driven by cultural factors as has been previously suggested. Learners used more hedges than boosters on all topics, contradicting most previous studies. Curriculum was determined to have a direct correlation with MD use, and other important factors may include perception of topic and overreliance on certain MDs over others (the One-to-One principal). This research implies that learners' perception of topic should be explored further as a variable affecting MD use. Curricula should be designed based on frequency of MD use by English native speakers, and learners should receive instruction that teaches the norms of MD use in academic writing. The methodology used in the study to determine correlations between MD use and the curriculum has a wide range of potential applications in the field of Contrastive Interlanguage Analysis.

  • This research evaluated differences of classification performance for feature selection methods using LDA topic model and Doc2Vec which is based on word embedding using deep learning, feature corpus sizes and classification algorithms. In addition to find the feature corpus with high performance of classification, an experiment was conducted using feature corpus was composed differently according to the location of the document and by adjusting the size of the feature corpus. Conclusionally, in the experiments using deep learning evaluate training frequency and specifically considered information for context inference. This study constructed biomedical document dataset, Disease-35083 which consisted biomedical scholarly documents provided by PMC and categorized by the disease category. Throughout the study this research verifies which type and size of feature corpus produces the highest performance and, also suggests some feature corpus which carry an extensibility to specific feature by displaying efficiency during the training time. Additionally, this research compares the differences between deep learning and existing method and suggests an appropriate method by classification environment.

A Corpus-Based Longitudinal Study of Diction in Chinese and British News Reports on Chang'e Project

  • As a milestone progression in China's space exploration history, Chang'e Project has attracted a lot of media attention since its first launching. This study aims to examine and compare the similarities and differences between the Chinese media and the British media in using nouns, verbs, and adjectives to report the Chang'e Project. After categorising the documents based on specific project phases, we created two diachronic corpora to explore the linguistic shifts and similarities and differences of diction employed by the Chinese and British media on the Chang'e Project ideology. This longitudinal study was performed with Lancsbox and the CLAWS web tagger through critical discourse analysis as the theoretical framework. The findings of the current study showed that the Chang'e Project coverage in both media increased on an annual basis, especially after 2019. In contrast to the objectivity and positivity in the Chinese Media, the British Media seemed to be more subjective with more appraisal adjectives in the news reports. Nonetheless, both countries were trying to be objective and formal in choosing nouns and verbs. Ideology-wise, the Chinese news media reports portrayed more positivity on domestic circumstances while the British counterpart was typically more critical. Notably, the study outcomes could catalyse future research on the Chang'e Project and facilitate diplomatic policies.

  • The purpose of this work is to examine the voice onset times (VOTs) of the three types of plosives from the Seoul Corpus male speakers in their twenties. In addition, the factors known to affect VOTs were analyzed, including the place and manner of articulation, speakers, location in words, type of following vowels and speech rates calculated from the three consecutive words. Much of the findings agreed with those from earlier studies on Korean and other languages and new discoveries were made.

  • This study aims to research into the meaning of Korean particle 'ka' and 'nun' inductively by examining the correspondences of those particles and English articles on the Korean-English parallel corpus. The correspondences were checked in three ways: semantically, syntactically and pragmatically. This study found that when the semantic or syntactic tier is not salient, the pragmatic tier is activated and particles are selected according to the pragmatic elements such as the amount of information or the change of topic. However, if the meaning of the particles is salient or if there is any syntactic motive, particles are selected in accordance with the semantic or syntactic elements. Former studies which focused on one of those three tiers cannot properly explain such correspondences on the Korean-English parallel corpus. This study shows that semantic, syntactic and pragmatic tiers hierarchically affect the selection of a particle and that the selection process is also related to speaker's intention. This dimensional analysis of particles is expected to contribute to theoretical studies and applied studies like Korean language education as well.

Expression of PAPP-A and $20{\alpha}$-HSD in the Bovine Corpus Luteum during Early Pregnancy (소의 초기 임신 황체에서 PAPP-A와 $20{\alpha}$-HSD의 발현 양상)

  • This study was performed to the expressions of pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) and 20alpha-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase ($20{\alpha}$-HSD) in bovine corpus luteum during early pregnancy. To determine the function of PAPP-A gene during early pregnancy, we collected corpus luteum samples on 30, 60 and 90 days of pregnancy in bovine. The mRNA expression of PAPP-A, $20{\alpha}$-HSD, progesterone-receptor (PR) and insulin-like growth factor binding protein4 (IGFBP4) gene was conducted by Real-time PCR. In parallel with mRNA levels, The protein expressions of PAPP-A and $20{\alpha}$-HSD were detected by immunological analysis. The mRNA expressions $20{\alpha}$-HSD and PAPP-A significantly increased on day 90 in the corpus luteum during pregnancy. The mRNA expression of PR and JGFBP4 in the corpus luteum progressively was enhanced at 30 to 60 day, but decreased on 90 day of pregnancy in the corpus luteum. The expression patterns of these genes, PAPP-A and $20{\alpha}$-HSD were similar pattern in these tissues. In conclusion, PAPP-A and $20{\alpha}$-HSD activity in corpus luteum could be played a role for early pregnancy manifestation.
