Opinion: Strategy of Semi-Automatically Annotating a Full-Text Corpus of Genomics & Informatics

  • There is a communal need for an annotated corpus consisting of the full texts of biomedical journal articles. In response to community needs, a prototype version of the full-text corpus of Genomics & Informatics, called GNI version 1.0, has recently been published, with 499 annotated full-text articles available as a corpus resource. However, GNI needs to be updated, as the texts were shallow-parsed and annotated with several existing parsers. I list issues associated with upgrading annotations and give an opinion on the methodology for developing the next version of the GNI corpus, based on a semi-automatic strategy for more linguistically rich corpus annotation.

A Corpus-Based Study on Language Features and Literary Themes in the Yellow Wall-Paper and Herland by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

  • This study aims to apply corpus-based approach to analyze The Yellow Wall-Paper and Herland written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, a women's rights activist in the late nineteenth-century America. Although both works have attracted feminists' attention to the woman question that concerned Gilman, discussion on her language features and their relation to the literary themes of these two works is still in need. In this corpus-based analysis, we argue that the main themes of different literary works can be revealed through linguistic patterns identified by number and gender features of nouns and pronouns in the contrast of two works and a balanced corpus. The linguistic features (number and gender) have been related with two themes, the 'group and individual' and the 'feminine and masculine', and are further interpreted in terms of mothering and feminine consciousness. By adopting linguistic approach, our study provides quantitative and qualitative evidence to verify the established themes and arguments of these literary texts.

  • This research studied the correlation of word frequency effect in Korean corpus. Experiment 1 showed that word frequency of each other corpus was significant correlated. Experiment 2 showed significant correlation between word frequency of each corpus and lexical decision time of participants. These results support that 4 corpus in this research should have stability to word frequency effect of participants

SGML 기반 비교 가능 코퍼스 구축 (The Contruction of the Comparable Corpus Based on SGML)

  • 대규모 문헌 자료는 정보원으로써 다양한 목적에 사용될 수 있다. 언어간 정보검색에서 한 언어의 단어가 다의미적(polymorphic)일 경우 대상 언어로 정확한 번역을 위하여 언어간 대응 구조를 제공하는 다국어 코퍼스가 필요하다. 본 논문에서는 언어간 정보검색에서 대응 구조로 사용될 수 있는 비교 가능한 코퍼스를 구축하였다. 구축된 코퍼스(KFCM)는 유럽 6개 국어로 구축된 금융 관련 기사 자료인 MLCC 코퍼스에 대응되는 코퍼스로 다양한 목적에 사용되며, MLCC 코퍼스로부터 독립적으로 구축한 SGML 기반 코퍼스이다. 본 논문에서는 KFCM의 응용과 코퍼스 구축 과정에서 발생하는 기술적 사항을 기술하였으며, 구축된 자료를 웹에 공개하였다.

한국어최적상호명코퍼스설계에관한연구 (A Study on the optimal text corpus for company names)

  • 본 논문에서는 114 안내시스템에 저장되어있는 서로 중복되어 있지 않는 1,566,943개의 상호명 코퍼스에서 이 코퍼스의 특징을 가장 잘 표현 해 줄 수 있는 최적 코퍼스를 설계하였다. 최적 코퍼스를 구하기 위해 두 단계의 방식을 택한다. 일 단계는 기본코퍼스에 존재하는 트라이폰이 모두 나타내는 최소의 단어 셋을 구하는 최적 음소균형 코퍼스 셋이고 다음 단계는 기본코퍼스에 존재하는 트라이폰의 빈번도를 고려하는 최소의 단어 셋을 구하는 음소 분포코퍼스 셋을 설계하였다. 실험 결과 최적 음소 균형 셋으로 8,699단어가 선정되었으며 최적 음소 분포 균형 셋으로 16,783 단어가 선정되었다. 이러한 최적 코퍼스는 음성 및 합성 시스템을 위한 음성데이터베이스를 구축 할 때 이용된다.

Lessons from Developing an Annotated Corpus of Patient Histories

  • We have developed a tool for annotation of electronic health record (EHR) data. Currently we are in the process of manually annotating a corpus of Norwegian general practitioners' EHRs with mainly linguistic information. The purpose of this project is to attain a linguistically annotated corpus of patient histories from general practice. This corpus will be put to future use in medical language processing and information extraction applications. The paper outlines some of our practical experiences from developing such a corpus and, in particular, the effects of semi-automated annotation. We have also done some preliminary experiments with part-of-speech tagging based on our corpus. The results indicated that relevant training data from the clinical domain gives better results for the tagging task in this domain than training the tagger on a corpus form a more general domain. We are planning to expand the corpus annotations with medical information at a later stage.

A Corpus-based Lexical Analysis of the Speech Texts: A Collocational Approach

  • Recently speech texts have been increasingly used for English education because of their various advantages as language teaching and learning materials. The purpose of this paper is to analyze speech texts in a corpus-based lexical approach, and suggest some productive methods which utilize English speaking or writing as the main resource for the course, along with introducing the actual classroom adaptations. First, this study shows that a speech corpus has some unique features such as different selections of pronouns, nouns, and lexical chunks in comparison to a general corpus. Next, from a collocational perspective, the study demonstrates that the speech corpus consists of a wide variety of collocations and lexical chunks which a number of linguists describe (Lewis, 1997; McCarthy, 1990; Willis, 1990). In other words, the speech corpus suggests that speech texts not only have considerable lexical potential that could be exploited to facilitate chunk-learning, but also that learners are not very likely to unlock this potential autonomously. Based on this result, teachers can develop a learners' corpus and use it by chunking the speech text. This new approach of adapting speech samples as important materials for college students' speaking or writing ability should be implemented as shown in samplers. Finally, to foster learner's productive skills more communicatively, a few practical suggestions are made such as chunking and windowing chunks of speech and presentation, and the pedagogical implications are discussed.

A Comparison of Korean EFL Learners' Oral and Written Productions

  • The purpose of the present study is to compare Korean EFL learners' speech corpus (i.e. oral productions) with their composition corpus (i.e. written productions). Four college students participated in the study. The composition corpus was collected through a writing assignment, and the speech corpus was gathered by audio-taping their oral presentations. The results of the data analysis indicate that (i) As for error frequency, young adult low-intermediate Korean EFL learners showed high frequency in determiners (mostly, indefinite articles), vocabulary (mostly, semantic errors), and prepositions. The frequency order did not show much difference between the speech corpus and the composition corpus; and (ii) When comparing the oral productions with the written productions, there were not many differences between them in terms of the contents, a style (i.e., colloquial vs. literary), vocabulary selection, and error types and frequency. Therefore, it is assumed that the proficiency in oral presentation of EFL learners at this learning stage heavily depends on how much/how well they are able to write. In other words, EFL learners' writing and speaking skills are closely co-related. It implies that the teacher does not need to separate teaching how to speak from teaching how to write. The teacher may use the same methods or strategies to help the learners improve their English speaking and writing skills. Furthermore, it will be more effective to teach writing before speaking since they have more opportunities to write than speak in the EFL contexts.

코퍼스에 기반한 문학텍스트 분석 (Corpus-Based Literary Analysis)

  • 코퍼스 언어학이 연구방법의 한 분야로서 최근 그 입지를 급격하게 넓혀온 가운데, 언어학적 현상과 함께 문학텍스트의 이해를 깊게 하는데 기여를 해 왔다. 최근 코퍼스 언어학의 급속한 저변확대에도 불구하고 문학텍스트 코퍼스를 기반으로 한 고전 및 문학작품의 재해석에 대한 시도는 국내언어학계에서 매우 미미한 실정에 머물러 있다. 이에 본 연구는 코퍼스 언어학의 분석도구인 컴퓨터 콘코던스 프로그램인 워드스미스를 이용하여 방대한 전자텍스트로 이루어져 있는 문학작픔의 문체적 특성과 주요테마를 조사하고자 하였다. 특히 본 연구는 텍스트의 주요한 특성을 나타내는 키워드(keyword)에 초점을 두고 세익스피어의 비극작품인 로미오와 줄리엣을 코퍼스 언어학적 분석기법으로 접근하여 작품세계를 재조명하여 학문적 의의가 크다고 생각되며 앞으로 관련된 후속연구가 이어질 것으로 기대된다.
