  • Purpose - For distribution corporate, the method of recognizing sales revenue may be different depending on the type of distribution transaction. Until the change in accounting standards for revenue recognition was made in 2002, the distribution corporate recognized the full amount of sales of goods regardless of the type of transaction. However, in accordance with accounting standards for revenue recognition, which began to be applied in 2003, distribution corporate differ in sales revenue recognition by transaction type. The Purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of sales revenue on the corporate value after the change of the revenue recognition accounting standards. Research design, data, and methodology - We selected a comprehensive wholesale and retail corporate listed on Korea Exchange. The research model extends the Ohlson(1995) model and regresses whether sales revenue affecting the corporate value is discriminatory value relevance between the corporate affected by changes in accounting standards for revenue recognition and those not. Results - The results of the analysis are as follows. First, The average value of stock price, net asset per share, and earnings per share are all higher than those before the change of accounting standards for revenue recognition. However, the average value of sales per share is lower than that before the change of accounting standards for revenue recognition. Second, the relationship between corporate value and net asset per share, earnings per share and sales per share, the coefficient of net asset per share, earnings per share and sales per share are all statistically significant positive value. Therefore, in explaining corporate value, besides net asset per share and earnings per share, sales per share provides additional information. And the coefficient of interaction variable between accounting standard change and sales per share is a statistically significant positive value. This result indicating that after the change of the revenue recognition accounting standards the usefulness of sales revenue has increased. Conclusions - The change in accounting standards for revenue recognition led to a decrease in distribution corporate sales revenue but the higher the relevance of the corporate value of the sales revenue information. These results shows that the change of accounting standards that reflects the transaction type of retailers was a revision to increase the value relevance of sales revenue in valuation of corporate value.

  • This research examined (1) the effects of the large scaled corporations' performances in the area of corporate economic responsibilities and corporate philanthropic responsibilities on the anti-corporate sentiments and (2) the effects of the anti-corporate sentiments on the consumers' evaluations of the large scaled corporations. The results of path analysis revealed that the corporate performances in philanthropic responsibilities had a negative effect on the anti-corporate sentiments as expected. However, different from the expectation, the corporate performances in economic responsibilities had a positive influence on the anti-corporate sentiments. This unexpected relationship between economic responsibilities and anti-corporate sentiments might be caused by the Korean consumers' perceptions that the more the large scaled corporations conducted their business activities illegally and unethically, that the more they achieved the various economic responsibilities. The anti-corporate sentiments showed the negative effects on the consumers' evaluations of the large scaled corporations.

  • A recent public opinion survey found that the anti-corporate sentiment of South Korean citizens is primarily due to the misbehavior of Korean corporations. South Korean citizens' skepticism of corporations may hinder the democratic and economic development of the country. As a driving force for community development, social capital is considered to enable citizens to collaborate with one another to resolve a shared problem. Specifically, this study pays attention to the relationship among social capital, corporate capacity, and trust, which may perhaps contribute to developing a democratic environment in Korean society. The study aims to explore whether Korean citizens' perceived corporate bonding and bridging social capital affect corporate capacity for collaborative action and trust in corporations. A Web survey of 385 South Koreans was conducted. The findings show that perceived bonding social capital among employees is positively related to corporate capacity for collaboration action. Moreover, perceived bonding among employees and bridging social capital between employees and local residents are positively related to corporate capacity for collaboration action and trust in corporations. These findings suggest that researchers and practitioners for organizational development and community-building need to enhance corporate social capital.

  • The research aims to explore the links among corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, and earnings management, considering vital roles of each component in Vietnam. There were 500 questionnaires provided to the targeted enterprises, where there were 150 enterprises in Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange, 150 enterprises in Hanoi Stock Exchange, and 200 enterprises in the unlisted public company market. Of the distributed questionnaires, only 289 replies offered needed information for analyses. The data derived from these firms was based on their annual or sustainability statements that were retrieved from the websites. This research used a six-year rolling window to calculate earnings management. To compute that variable, lagged year information was included, so the data from 2011 to 2017 was needed to collect. The empirical results show that corporate governance mechanism is a significant moderation in the positive link between good corporate social responsibility and earnings management. Furthermore, corporate social responsibility and earnings management also play mediating roles in the associations among corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, and earnings management. This project recommends that corporate governance mechanism is an essential driver of the managerial behaviors in social responsibility and ethical accounting practices, which are in turn mediators in the joint research model.

  • Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to investigate the determinants of corporate anti-corruption practice disclosure (ACPD) from the perspective of rent-seeking theory. Research design, data, and methodology - Data are hand-collected from corporate social responsibility reports (CSRR) issued by 724 A-share listed firms in China. This paper provides an empirical analysis of the relationship between ownership structure and corporate ACPD as well as its moderating role in the institutional environment. Results - Our findings indicate that rent-seeking is a key factor in influencing corporate ACPD. State-owned enterprises disclose significantly more anti-corruption information than private ones in order to achieve personal promotion of top executives. Monopoly enterprises reported significantly less anti-corruption information than enterprises in competitive industries due to their rent-seeking behavior. The reduction of government intervention and improvement of legal environment are helpful to curb corporate rent-seeking activities and enhance the level of corporate ACPD. Conclusions - Rent-seeking is an important factor in explaining corporate voluntary disclosure in emerging countries. Institutional environment also plays a moderating role in the relationship between ownership structure and corporate voluntary disclosure. Our results are of interest to policy makers, regulators and market participants that are interested in corporate voluntary disclosure and corruption prevention.

  • Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and corporate present and future value. Design/methodology/approach - This paper intends to prove the relationship between CSR and corporate value once again by selecting A-share companies listed on the China Shenzhen Stock Exchange and Shanghai Stock Exchange from 2010 2017. This paper also examines the effect of five dimensions of CSR on corporate value in China. Findings - Empirical evidence shows that CSR is conducive to corporate value. The fulfillment of social responsibilities improves firm value in the future. Further, the regression results show that the social responsibility of the non-state-owned enterprise (Non-SOEs) group has a more significant effect on corporate financial performance than on the state-owned enterprise (SOEs) group. Research implications or Originality - This study has limitations. First, the grouping is only divided into two groups of SOEs and non-SOEs, and we did not consider foreign investments, that is, foreign-funded enterprises, for the comparative analysis. Second, only the linear relationship between CSR and corporate value was tested. In the future, we must determine whether there exists a nonlinear relationship between the two key concepts. Finally, there exists no research on CSR and corporate value by specific industries. Thus, the relationship between the five dimensions of CSR and corporate value should be investigated by specific industries.
