  • Environmental concerns arising from synthetic herbicides in plant management systems have led to an interest in plant-derived compounds as natural herbicides. Inhibitory effects of compounds extracted with 50% methanol from corn (Zea mays L.) and pine (Pinus densiflora L.) were evaluated on large crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop.), annual bluegrass Poa annua L.), radish (Raphanus sativus L.), and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) The aqueous extracts inhibited seed germination and had postemergence activity on the four species. The stability of biological activity of corn grain, stover, and root extracts was not affected by heating to $135^{\circ}C$ or freezing/thawing treatments when applied at levels above 0.25kg m(sup)-2 based on dry weights of powders before extraction. Heating reduced the activity of pine litter and bark extracts at all levels except the highest application level but had little effect on pine needle extracts.

  • The growth characteristics and yield per unit area of two cultivation systems of forage, corn (Zea mays L.) monoculture and corn-cowpea (Vigna sinesis King) inter-cropping were compared and obtained follow results. 1. The two cultivation systems were not significantly different in leaf length, leaf width and length of internode with harvesting time. 2. The weight of stalk and leaves of a plant were decreased with maturity, while weight of ear was markedly increased. The patterns of relative ratio of each components was essentially same in each cultivation system. In corn monocrop., the percentages of stalk, leaf and ear at final harvesting stage were 22.9, 13.7 and 63.4, respectively. 3. Dry matter yield per unit area (33kgIlOa) of intercropped corn at yellow stage was similar to that of monocropped corn ( l,482.8kg/ 10a vs 1 ,SO8.9kg/ 10a). At ripe stage, however, the DM yield of intercrop. was higher than that of monocrop. (1,810.4kg/lOa vs 1,660.4 kg/ 1 Oa). 4. The same pattern was observed in organic matter yield.

Effect of Thermal Pretreatment on the Functional Constituents of Waxy Corn (Zea mays L.)

  • Quantitative changes in functional constituents of waxy corn (Zea mays L.) by 5 different thermal pretreatments, including roasting, steaming, microwave, puffing, and extruding, were determined and compared with those of the raw waxy corn. There were no significant differences in fatty acid compositions among the corn treated with 5 thermal treatments. Levels of $\alpha$- and $\gamma$-tocopherols, soluble amino acids, and phytosterols decreased by thermal treatments, while those of p-coumaric and ferulic acids considerably increased by thermal treatments. In particular, the contents of tocopherols and phytosterols, and souble amino acid decreased significant in the steaming and puffing processes, respectively, whereas those of 2 free cinnamic acids increased significantly in the steaming and puffing processes. The extruding process showed smaller quantitative changes in tocopherols, phytosterols, and hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives compared to other heat pretreatments. These results suggest that the extruding process have a positive effect on valuable phytochemicals in waxy corn.

찰옥수수의 전자공여작용과 페놀성화합물, Tocopherols 및 Carotenoids의 함량 (Electron Donating Ability and Contents of Phenolic Compounds, Tocopherols and Carotenoids in Waxy Corn (Zea mays L.))

  • 항산화활성이 높은 찰옥수수를 육종하고, 옥수수의 항산화활성에 가장 큰 효과를 나타내는 물질을 추적하고자, 찰옥수수 자식계통과 재래종의 항산화활성을 측정하고 페놀성화합물, tocopherols, carotenoids의 함량을 측정하였다. 전자공여능에 의한 항산화활성은 $15.5{\sim}65.0%$였고, 페놀성화합물은 $102.3{\sim}323.5\;{\mu}g/mL$였으며, tocopherols는 $15.6{\sim}144.2\;{\mu}g/mL$였고, A450의 값은 $0.047{\sim}0.206$였다. 4종의 검정찰옥수수는 항산화활성이 48.7%, 페놀성화합물은 $267.0\;{\mu}g/mL$, tocopherols은 $87.0\;{\mu}g/mL$로 상당히 높았다. 항산화활성과 페놀성화합물, tocopherols의 함량과는 고도의 상관관계가 있었으나 carotenoids와는 유의성이 없었다.

화장품 천연원료로서 옥수수잎 추출물의 효능 비교연구 (A Comparative Study on the Efficacy of Zea mays L. Extracts as a Natural Ingredient in Cosmetics)

  • 국내에서 재배되는 옥수수의 수확 후 버려지는 잎을 수거하여 음건하고 분쇄 한 후 실험에 사용하였다. 두 가지 용매로 추출 후 DPPH, ABTS, 총 플라보노이드 함량, 총 폴리페놀 함량을 측정하여 항산화 활성을 분석하고, Paper disc diffusion method 로 clear zone의 직경을 측정 하였다. 그 결과 에탄올 추출물이 모든 항산화활성과 항균활성에서 다소 높은 결과를 나타내었다. Gallic acid를 표준물질로 하여 총 polyphenol 함량을 측정한 결과 CE는 $31.2{\pm}5.2mg\;GAE/g$로 높은 활성을 보였고, DPPH radical 소거능 측정 결과 CE는 1, 10, 100, 1,000 (${\mu}g/mL$) 농도에서 각각 $4.6{\pm}0.9%$, $6.4{\pm}0.5%$, $22.9{\pm}0.6%$, $83.2{\pm}0.2%$로 나타나 농도 의존적 경향을 보였으며 1,000 (${\mu}g/mL$)에서는 매우 높은 활성을 보였다. 지금까지 옥수수와 옥수수 수염에 대한 연구는 많지만 페기 되는 잎에 대한 연구는 없어 본 연구가 새로운 천연 항산화, 항균 효능을 가진 원료개발의 기초 자료가 될 것으로 판단된다.

Nondestructive Classification between Normal and Artificially Aged Corn (Zea mays L.) Seeds Using Near Infrared Spectroscopy

  • Near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy was used to classify normal and artificially aged nonviable corn (Zea mays L., cv. 'Suwon19') seeds. The spectra at 1100-2500nm were scanned with normal and artificially aged single seeds and analyzed by principle component analysis (PCA). To discriminate normal seeds from artificially aged seeds, a calibration modeling set was developed with a discriminant partial least square 2 (PLS 2) method. The calibration model derived from PLS 2 resulted in 100% classification accuracy of normal and artificially aged (aged) seeds from the raw, the 1st and 2nd derivative spectra. The prediction accuracy of the unknown normal seeds was 88, 100 and 97% from the raw, the $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ derivative spectra, and that of the unknown aged seeds was 100% from all the raw, the $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ derivative spectra, respectively. The results showed a possibility to separate corn seeds into viable and non-viable using NIR spectroscopy.

  • The growth characteristics and yield per unit area of two cropping systems, corn monoculture and 'wrnsoybean intercropping, were compared and the obtained results were as follows; 1.The two cultivation systems were not significantly different in leaf length, leaf width and length of internode at harvesting time. 2.The weight of stalk and the leaves of a plant were decreased with maturity, while the weight of ear was markedly increased. The patterns of relative ratio of each components were essentialy same in each cultivation systems. In corn monoculture, the percentages of stalk, leaf, and ear at final harvesting stage were 22.9, 13.7, and 63.4 and in corn-soybean intercropping, they were 21.8, 10.9, and 67.3 respectively. 3.Dry matter yield per unit area (kg/lOa) of intercropped corn at yellow stage was similar to that of monocultured corn (1, 483 kg/ 10a vs 1, 509 kg/ 10a). At ripe stage, however, the dry matter yield of intercropped plant was more than that of monocultured (1, 679 vs 1, 660 kg/ 10a). 4.The same pattern was observed in organic matter yield.

Silage Fermentative Quality and Characteristics of Anthocyanin Stability in Anthocyanin-rich Corn (Zea mays L.)

  • The fermentative quality and quantitative change in anthocyanin of anthocyanin-rich corn (Zea mays L.) during storage and in vitro ruminal fermentation were studied. The anthocyanin-rich corn silages in bag silo, drum silo and round bale had good fermentative qualities, such as low pH (5% DM) and butyric acid-free, and its quality was maintained for more than 370 d. The amount of anthocyanin in the anthocyanin-rich corn decreased after ensiling by about 45% (from 3.34 to 1.88 mg/g DM), but stayed constant after day 60. The in vitro incubation of the anthocyanin-rich corn with ruminal fluid revealed little degradation of anthocyanin. These results indicate that the anthocyanin had no negative effect on silage fermentation, and the anthocyanin-rich corn silage is utilizable for practical use as a feedstuff. Our results also demonstrate alteration of the anthocyanin content during storage, and show that anthocyanin-rich corn is a suitable antioxidant source for ruminants because of the high stability of the anthocyanin in ruminal fluid.

찰옥수수 $F_1$의 지방산 조성과 항산화 활성 (Fatty Acid Composition and Antioxidative Activity in Waxy Corn (Zea mays L.) $F_1's$)

  • 우리나라 찰옥수수의 품질을 향상시키는 성분육종의 기초자료를 제공하고자, 310개 $F_1$의 지방산 조성과 항산화 활성, 페놀화합물, tocopherols, carotenoids의 함량을 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. Palmitic acid와 stearic acid, linoleic acid, 불포화지방산은 각각 $14.6{\pm}2.5%,\;2.5{\pm}1.0%,\;24.8{\pm}4.2%,\;55.6{\pm}5.4%,\;81.8{\pm}3.1%$였고, 항산화 활성과 페놀화합물, tocopherols, carotenoids의 함량은 각각 $22.8{\pm}5.9%,\;36.2{\pm}11.5\;{\mu}g/mL,\;120.3{\pm}27.7\;{\mu}g/mL,\;0.4{\pm}0.6\;{\mu}g/mL$였다. Linoleic acid와 oleic acid 간에는 고도의 부의 상관관계가 있었다. 항산화활성은 페놀화합물과 tocopherols 함량과는 고도의 상관관계가 있었으나, carotenoids의 함량과는 유의성이 없었다

Biosolid 처리가 옥수수 근권의 유기산 생성과 중금속 유효도에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Biosolids on Heavy Metal Bioavailability and Organic Acid Production in Rhizosphere of Zea mays L.)

  • Biosolid 처리는 옥수수의 생장을 촉진시켰으며 중금속 흡수 또한 현저히 증가시켰다. 특히 다른 biosolid와 비교하여 Nu-earth 처리에서 옥수수 지상부의 Cd과 Zn의 흡수가 많은 것으로 나타났다. 옥수수의 중금속 흡수는 biosolid 자체의 중금속 함량과 밀접하게 관련되었는데, 크롬과 납의 흡수는 그 중 상관관계가 가장 낮았다. 근권의 유기산은 주로 lactic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid 및 oxalic acid 인 것으로 나타났다. 그 외 glutaric acid와 succinic acid, pyruvic acid 및 tartaric acid도 일부 발견되었다. Biosolid를 처리한 경우에는 butyric acid가 가장 많았으며 처리하지 않은 경우에는 acetic acid가 가장 많았다.
