Fabrication of Cordierite Honeycomb from Fly Ash

  • In this study, we attempt to synthesize the cordierite from the reaction of fly-ash, alumina, silicon dioxide, and magnesia powders. For the purpose of air purification, the honeycomb filter with porous cordierite was fabricated from the combination of synthetic cordierite and pore forming agent. Fabricated porous cordierite honeycomb was prepared with high porosity (58%), and good compressive strength (69MPa).

Pt/γ-Alumina/Cordierite 비드형 세라믹 폼 필터의 NOx 제거 특성 ([ De-NOx ] Characteristics for Pt/γ-Alumina/Cordierite Foam Filter of Beads Shape)

  • Porous cordierite beads, of which the average pore size was $130{\mu}m$ and porosity was about 80%, were prepared by the foaming method and then their application as support of the $Pt/{\gamma}-alumina$ catalyst for $NO_x$, reduction with propene was investigated. The pressure drop of a 2 mm porous beads filter was less than that of a 1 mm porous beads filter and the difference in pressure drop between these two increased as the flow rate increased. The catalytic activity of $Pt/{\gamma}-alumina$ washcoated on the porous bead was tested with varying Pt loading $(0.005{\sim}0.1g/cm^3),\;C_3H_6/NO$ mole ratio $(0.5{\sim}8)$, space velocity $(20,000{\sim}30,000h^{-1})$ and oxygen contents (1 and 8). Pt loading of $0.04g/cm^3$ showed the highest activity for $NO_x$ conversion. The $De-NO_x$, test was operated in the temperature range of $200{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ and the best operation temperature of the catalytic filter is about $250^{\circ}C$. As the C/N ratio increased, increase of the $NO_x$, conversion might result from the increase in exhaustion of the amount of oxygen by the reduction of hydrocarbon. $NO_x$ conversion at $20,000h^{-1}$ of space velocity shows a maximum 34% higher conversion than that at $30,000h^{-1}$. On condition that $O_2$ was 5%, space velocity was $20,000h^{-1}$ and the C/N ratio was 8, the $NO_x$ conversion exhibited a maximum of 40% at $250^{\circ}C$.

  • The main purpose of this study is enhancing the filtering efficiency, performance and durability of filter by growing SiC whiskers on cordierite honeycomb substrate. The experiment was performed by Chemical Vapor Infiltration (CVI) in order to control pore morphology of substrate. Increasing the mechanical strength of porous substrate is one of important issues. The formation of "networking structure" in the pore of porous substrate increased mechanical strength. The high pressure gas injection to the specimen showed that a little of whiskers were separated from substrate but additional film coating enhanced the stability of whisker at high pressure gas injection. Particle trap test was performed. More nano-particle was trapped by whisker growth at the pore of substrate. Therefore it is expected that the porous cordierite which deposited the SiC whisker will be the promising material for the application as filter trapping the nano-particles.

촉매 담지 코디어라이트 다공성 필터의 NOx/SOx 동시제거에 대한 연구 (Simultaneous Removal of NOx/SOx by Catalyst-loaded Cordierite Porous Filter)

  • 평균입자크기가 200 ${\mu}m$인 코디어라이트 분말을 사용하여 다공성 필터를 제조한 후, 진공함침법으로 $V_2O_5$, CuO, $LaCoO_3$ 촉매를 담지시킨 후 NO와 $SO_2$ 기체를 촉매 담지 세라믹필터에 동시 통과시키면서 NOx/SOx의 동시제거효율을 측정하였다. 제조된 다공성 필터의 기공률은 61.6%였고, 압축강도는 12.3 MPa이었으며, 면속도 5 cm/sec에서의 차압은 147 Pa이었다. NO와 $SO_2$의 동시제거효율을 분석해 본 결과, 페로브스카이트계 $LaCoO_3$ 촉매의 동시제거효율이 가장 우수함을 확인하였으며, $LaCoO_3$ 촉매의 NO에 대한 제거효율은 90% 이상, $SO_2$에 대해서는 80% 이상이었다.

DPF의 PM 포집효율 예측을 위한 다양한 다공성 매질 유동장 모델 해석 (A Detailed Examination of Various Porous Media Flow Models for Collection Efficiency and Pressure Drop of Diesel Particulate Filter)

  • In the present study a detailed examination of various porous media models for predicting filtration efficiency and pressure drop of diesel particulate filter (DPF), such as sphere-in-cell and constricted tube models, are attempted. In order for demonstrating their validities of correct estimation on permeability, geometry of property configurations common in commercial cordierite DPFs are correlated to the porous media flow models, and validations of predicted filtration efficiencies due to the use of different unit collectors are made with experiments. The result shows that the porosity, pore size and permeability of cordierite DPF can be successfully correlated by Kuwabara flow field with correction factor of 0.6. The unit collector efficiency predicted by sphere-in-cell model agrees very well with measurements in accumulation mode, whereas that by constricted tube model with significant prediction error.

입도와 흑연 첨가제에 따른 유해 입자 및 가스 동시제거용 세라믹필터 특성평가 (Characteristics of the Ceramic Filter with the Control of Particle Size and Graphite Additive for the Hazardous Particle and Gas Removal)

  • In this study, the porous ceramic filter was developed to be able to remove both dust and hazardous gas contained in fuel gas at high temperature. The porous ceramic filters were fabricated and used as a catalyst support. And the effects have been investigated such as the mean particle size, organic content and addition of foaming agent on the porosity, compressive strength and pressure drop of ceramic filters. With the increase of mean powder size and the organic content for the cordierite filter, the porosity was increased, but the compressive strength and pressure drop were decreased. From the results of the research, the optimum condition for the fabrication of ceramic filters could be acquired and they had the porosity of 58%, the compressive strength of 13.4 MPa and the pressure drop of 250 Pa. It was expected that this ceramic filter was able to be applied to the glass melting furnace, combustor, and dust/toxic gas removal filter.

촉매를 담지한 코디어라이트 필터의 VOC 제거 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Characteristics of VOC Removal by Cordierite Filter Loaded with Catalyst)

  • 평균입경이 200 ${\mu}m$인 코디어라이트 분말로 다공성 필터를 제조한 후, 진공함침법으로 Pt, Pd, Cu, Co, La, $V_2O_5$ 촉매를 담지시켰다. VOC의 일종인 톨루엔을 촉매담지 세라믹필터에 통과시키며 촉매산화시킴으로서 톨루엔에 대한 촉매들의 활성에 대하여 고찰하였다. 제조된 다공성 필터의 겉보기 기공률은 62%였고, 압축강도는 약 10 MPa이었으며, 5 cm/sec 유속에서의 차압은 15 mmHg였다. 촉매를 필터에 담지시키면 기공률은 감소하고, 차압과 압축강도는 증가하였다. 필터에 담지된 촉매들 중에서 Pt 촉매의 활성이 가장 높았고, 250 $^{\circ}C$의 온도에서 90% 이상의 톨루엔을 제거시킬 수 있었다. 250 $^{\circ}C$ 이하의 온도에서는 Pt 촉매 담지량이 톨루엔의 전환율에 영향을 미쳤지만, 그 이상의 온도에서는 Pt 촉매 담지량의 차이에 의한 영향은 나타나지 않았다.

다공성 $ZrTiO_4$ 재료의 제조 및 특성 (Fabrication and characteristics of porous ceramics from $ZrTiO_4$ based ceramic material)

  • 코디어라이트는 낮은 열팽창계수를 가지나, 디젤 배기가스 담체로써 사용하기에는 기계적 강도가 낮고, 황에 대한 내산성이 취약한 문제를 가지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 $SiO_2,\;Al_2O_3$, MoOx, $Cr_2O_3$$Nb_2O_5$가 첨가된 $ZrTiO_4$의 물성을 XRD, SEM, UTM 및 열팽창계수 측정 장치를 사용하여 측정하고 분석하였다. $ZrTiO_4$$TiO_2$$ZrO_2$를 출발원료로 볼빌에서 혼합한 후 $1240^{\circ}C$ 이상의 온도에서 3시간 하소함으로써 monoclinic 구조로 합성되었다. 꺽임강도 및 열팽창계수 측정용 시편은 $ZrTiO_4$와 첨가제를 혼합 성형하고, $1300^{\circ}C$에서 3 시간 소성함으로써 얻어졌다. 소결된 시편의 기공율은 첨가제의 함량이 5%로 증가함에 따라 첨가제의 종류에 관계없이 감소하였으나, 첨가제의 함량이 10% 로 증가하면 기공율은 포화되었다. 꺾임강도는 $Al_2O_3$를 5, 10 wt% 첨가 시 큰 폭으로 증가하였으나, 나머지 첨가제에 대해서는 꺾임강도가 감소하였다. $ZrTiO_4$의 열팽창계수 $(1000^{\circ}C)$$Nb_2O_5$를 제외하고는 첨가제가 증가할수록 계속적으로 감소하였으며, 특히, $SiO_2$가 첨가된 경우 가장 낮은 열팽창계수를 나타내었다.
