Almost all copper slags contain a considerable amount of Cu (0.5 - 3.7%) close to or even higher than copper ores. A number of methods for metal recovery from copper slag were reported These methods can be classified into three categories, flotation, leaching and roasting. Sulfide flotation method for the recovery of copper from Kazahstan copper furnace slag is discussed in this investigation. 50% of copper from the slag was recovered by sulfide flotation at pH 4. meanwhile 67% of copper from the slag was recovered at pH 11. Higher copper recovery result at pH 11 rather than that at pH 4 was caused by the fact that copper sulfides were floated in particle size fraction over $100{\mu}m$ in concentrates at pH 11. When the slag were ground below $74{\mu}m$by ball milling, the recovery of copper by floation in slag improved to 78 - 83% because of copper liberation effect.
Ecosystems in the Keweenaw Peninsula region of Lake Superior, USA, were disturbed by over 500 million tons of copper-rich mine tailings during the period 1850-1968. Metals leaching from these mine residues have had dramatic effects on the ecosystems. Vast acreages of exposed tailings that are over 100 years old remain unvegetated because of the combination of metal toxicity, absence of nutrients, and temperature and water stress. Therefore, it is important to characterize and fractionate solid copper phases for assessing labile forms of copper in soils and sediments contaminated by the mining wastes. X-ray diffraction analyses indicate that calcite, quartz, hematite, orthoclase, and sanidine minerals are present as major minerals, whereas cuprite, tenorite, malachite, and chalcopyrite might be present as copper minerals in the mining wastes. Sequential extraction technique revealed that carbonate and oxide fractions were the largest pools of copper (ca. 50-80%) in lakeshore and wetland stamp sands whereas the organic matter fraction was the largest reservoir (ca. 32%) in the lake sediments. The concentrations of iron and copper were inversely correlated in the oxide fraction suggesting that copper may occur as a surface coating on iron oxides. As particle size and water contents decrease, the percent of the copper bound to the labile carbonate fraction increases.
The metamorphosed belt on cherty and andesitic rocks of the Gyeongnam province area has been well known as the most important copper matallogenetic province in Korea and locally has been investigated by several geologists. This report is summarized about geology, occurrence of ore deposits, the study of the present status of mine developments and exploitations and the suggestions of future proposed of copper mine developments and harmoniously and reseonably planning of demands and supply of copper ore. For convenience of study the writer divided the survey region as 4 areas, according to the conditions of mine location. They are (1) Goseong copper area (2) Gunbuk-Haman copper area (3) Masan-Changwon copper area (4) Tongrae-Ilgwang copper area. The geology of the above 4 areas consits of Cretaceous Gyongsang System, which is divided into Silla series, Nakdong Series and Bulguksa Series. The former has intrusive and extrusive andesite and sedimentary formation, and the latter has dioritic and hornblende granite. Ore deposits which is mostly vein types are confined mostly in the andesite and cherty rocks of Silla and Nakdong Series. It is observed slight hydrothermal alteration, i. e. propylitization, chloritization, saussuritization and silicification. It seems that the ore was formed by hydrothermal solution and secondary enrichement. The ore minerals are mainly chalcopyrite and pyrite, with small amounts of malachite, azurite, chalcocite, cuprite, galena, and sphalerite, magnetite, tetrahedrite and etc.. The efficient plan of copper mine developments in surveyed region are as following; (a) Gyeongnam Copper districts are divided in 4 area as mentioned above. (b) Each area would be likely developed as group-working as one unit. For the sufficiently supplying a demand of electric copper, the importations of high grade copper ore in foreign country are invitable at present status of copper mine developments and exploitations.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the proprieties of practical application and possibility of bacterial leaching method to the low copper minerals in Korea. Therfore, ore samples and mine water of the Talsung, Ilkwang, Taekwang, Yongho and Siheung were analyzed chemically, mineralogically, and bacteriologically. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. The range of pH value was 2.6-3.8. 2. Copper contents in ore samples of Talsung and Ilkwang were 0.38% and 0.63%, and those in mine water of Talsung nad ilkwang were 584 .$\mu$g and 15.$\mu$g per ml, respectively. 3. Ferric sulfate contents in mine water of Tlsung and Ilkwang were 27.2.$\mu$g and 10.5.$\mu$g per ml, respectively. 4. Ferrobacillus ferroosxidans was isolated and identified from Talsung and Ilkwang mine water and specially Thiobacillus thiooxidans was isolated from Ilkwang mine water.
In order to investigate the distribution of an iron-oxidizing bacterium, Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans in Korea, the authors had carried out the chemical and microbiological analysis of mine water. The results obtained were as follows : 1. Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans concerned to leaching was isolated from 10 copper mine water out of 46 sites in Korea. 2. As the results of bacterial oxidation, the contents of sulfuric acid, ferric sulphate and copper in the bacteria-bearing solutions were higher than those in bacteria-free solutions.
Exposure to Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) potentially causes adverse health effects (e.g. respiratory symptoms, lung cancer). Due to a lack of data on Elemental Carbon (EC) exposure levels in underground copper ore mining (unlike other underground mining industries such as non-metallic and coal mining), this case study aims to provide individual miners' EC exposure levels, and information on their work practices including use of personal protective equipment. EC measurement was carried out during different work activities (i.e. drilling, driving a loader, plant fitting, plant operation, driving a Specialized Mining Vehicle (SMV)) as per NIOSH Method 5040. The copper miners were working 10 h/day and 5 days/week. This study found that the most significant exposures to EC were reported from driving a loader (range $0.02-0.42mg/m^3$). Even though there were control systems (i.e. water tanks and DPM filters) on the diesel vehicles, around 49.5% of the results were over the adjusted recommendable exposure limit ($0.078mg/m^3$). This was probably due to: (1) driver's frequently getting in and out of the diesel vehicles and opening the windows of the diesel vehicles, and (2) inappropriate maintenance of the diesel vehicles and the DPM control systems. The use of the P2 type respirator provided was less than 19.2%. However, there was no significant difference between the day shift results and the night shift results. In order to prevent or minimize exposure to EC in the copper ore mine, it is recommended that the miners are educated in the need to wear the appropriate respirator provided during their work shifts, and to maintain the diesel engine and emission control systems on a regular basis. Consideration should be given to a specific examination of the diesel vehicles' air-conditioning filters and the air ventilation system to control excessive airborne contaminants in the underground copper mine.
In this study, we identified the secondary precipitates from Samsan-jeil and Sambong mine, Goseong, Gyeongnam by means of scanning electron microscopy, electron probe microanalysis and X-ray powder diffraction analysis. Copper sulfide minerals had been produced from the mines during last few decades, however they are not worked. White and blue precipitates were found at the downstream of mine rock dump at Sambong mine and green one was at Samsan-jeil mine. The white precipitate covered the host rock surface with thickness of $30{\mu}m$, and is a kind of diatom with $10{\mu}m$ in length and $3{\mu}m$ in width. It is a species Fragilaria constuens, which is contained a order Pennales(pennate diatom) and lives in fresh water. The blue precipitate is the alteration product of chalcopyrite. It resultes in the increase in the ratio Cu:Fe from 5 to 13. The green precipitate has worm-like morphology with $10{\sim}20nm$ in diameter and $200{\sim}300nm$ in length. It is mainly composed of secondary copper sulfate such as woodwardite. However, it could be formed by the activity of microorganism, because the copper content is more than any secondary copper sulfate reported in copper sulfide mine. In order to identity the green precipitate exactly, the further research is needed.
The Red Hill deposit of the Dongjom Copper Mine is the most promising deposit of the mine and under intensive exploration at present although there are eight more deposits of vein type. With total 2160m drilling of 9 holes completed and 400m drilling on two holes underway, the nature of the Red Hill deposit has come more clear. The copper content in the whole ore body is meager so far as the exploration done up to present indicates, but there are evidences that mineralization covers all over the granodiorite cupola at the Red Hill area. The petrological work and assay on the samples taken by the writers indicate that granodiorite rocks can be divided into fresh zone and alteration zone. Alteration zone consists of potassic and argillic zones accompanyied by silicification zone on basis of Lowell and Guilbert model Argillic zone has closely related with a mineralization in the Red Hill deposit. It has been cleared that the alteration acompanyied with the mineralization took place not only &long vertical fissures but also in the irregular lateral zone, the nature of which is unknown. Judging from the results of exploration and petrochemical study on the Red Hill deposit which is imbedded in a southern part of the granodiorite cupola, it can be concluded by the writer's opinion that the Red Hill deposit is possibly a porphyry copper deposit, because the shape of the ore body, mineral zoning and paragenesis and wall rock alteration resemble to those of typical porphyry copper deposits. It is the writers' opinion that more exploration work is required so as to evaluate the deposit.
The geology of the mine consists of Cretaceous lower andesitic breccia member, tuffaceous black shale, upper tuffaceous sandstone member and andesitic dike. Ore bodies are two parallel veins of breccia originated from hydrothermal activity of later acidic igneous intrusion. First two periods of mineralization, gold and silver, and copper, and later copper enrichment was identified. The first two might have been occurred during boiling of hydrothermal solution that formed breccia and copper enrichment was accomplished by enhancement of $CO_2$ fugacity from the organic material contained in the black shale. With all the geologic and mineralogic data and inferences attained from other investigators it was estimated that the optimum depth of the ore mineralization was between 500m and 300m below the surface of Kyong-Sang series.

I.P exploration is conducted mainly at the alluvium covered granodiorite stock of the Red Hill area at the Dongjeom coal mine, employing Canadian Mcphar equipments of variable frequencies-domain method along a total of 8.5 survey line. Mineralization zone is found by LP anomalies along the I.P the profile of frequency mode. Comparing with the past drilling data, the cause of each anomly is furthermore identified as copper bearing mineralized zones. As alteration and mineralization cover all over the Red-Hill altered grandiorite, copper bearing sulfide veinlets and strings filled out the fractured and altered zones.
