  • A column solid phase extraction procedure based on modified polyurethane foam (PUF) by a newly synthesized Schiff base ionophore, named 2,2'-{iminobis[propane-3,1-diylnitrilo(1E)prop-1-yl-1-ylidene]}diphenol, was developed for preconcentration step of trace amounts determination of copper ions in water samples by atomic absorption flame spectroscopy. The influence of parameters on the adsorption process such as sample pH, amount of modified PUF packed in the column, type and volume of stripping reagent and its flow rate were investigated and optimized. Under optimum experimental conditions, the calibration graph was linear in a relatively wide range ($0.005-210{\mu}g/ml$) with a limit of detection $0.002{\mu}g/ml$ of copper. The proposed method allows achieving to a concentration factor of >133. The capacity of a column (1.6 cm i.d.) packed by 6 g of PUF modified by 12 mg of the Schiff base was found to be $247.7({\pm}2.1){\mu}g$ of copper. It was found that the adsorption process was highly selective towards copper ions with respect to some associated metal ions. The presented procedure was successfully applied for determination of copper in some water samples.

  • Separation/recovery of valuable metals such as nickel or tin from copper based alloys has recently attracted from the viewpoints of environmental protection and resource recycling. In this report, preliminary study on concentration and separation of nickel from copper based alloy dross using selective adsorption by chelate resin was performed. The chelate resin used in this study has absorbed copper ions more easily than nickel ions in the metal solution, which could allow the concentration/separation of the nickel from the copper base alloy solution. The final molar ratios of Ni and Cu ions in the two concentrated solutions were 70 and 99 % respectively after three-time flowing the solution through the chelate resin column.

  • The complexes of $C_2-\;and\;C_6$-dihydroceramides with transition metal ions have been investigated by using Electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS). The formation and fragmentation pathways of several doubly charged cluster ions as well as singly charged cluster ions of $C_2-\;and\;C_6$-dihydroceramides with transition metal ions have studied by ESI-MS/MS in the positive mode. Under ESI conditions, dihydroceramides form singly and doubly charged complexes with transition metal ions $(Mn^{2+},\;Fe^{2+},\;Co^{2+},\;Ni^{2+},\;and\;Zn^{2+}\;except\;Cu^{2+})$ with the compositions of $[DHCer+M+2H^2O-H]^+,\;[2DHCer+M+2H2O-H]^+,\;[3DHCer+M+2H2O-H]^+,\;[2DHCer+M]^{2+},\;[3DHCer+M]^{2+},\;[4DHCer+M]^{2+},\;[5DHCer+M]^{2+},\;and\;[6DHCer+M]^{2+}\;(DHCer\;=\;C_2-\;or\;C_6$-dihydroceramide, M = transition metal ion). The different complexation behavior of copper is responsible for relatively lower affinity of dihydroceramides to copper compared to those of other transition metals. It is also found that in the mass spectrum of the dihydroceramide complexes with copper(II), [2DHCer+Cu-H]$^+$ was observed with considerable intensity as well as [2DHCer+Cu+2$H_2O-H]^+$ due to its different geometry from those of other metals.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of acid rain in spraying copper hydroxide 77% wettable power(WP) on leaf surface morphology and crop injury of the garlic(Allium sativum L.). Leaf chlorosis, hooked leaves, wrinkled epidermal cells and increased stomata open of garlic were induced by foliar application of simulated acid rain(SAR). It was become to be severe in application of copper hydroxide solution after application of SAR, but those yield of garlic was not significantly different from the untreated control. Leaf chlorosis was sharply increased above 100 ppm of copper ions. Amount of solved copper ions in copper hydroxide solution was remarkably increased below pH 5.5 and the residue in garlic leaves was significantly increased by application of copper hydroxide solution after spraying SAR compared with application of copper hydroxide solution only. When calcium carbonate was applied together with copper hydroxide leaf chlorosis was less than copper hydroxide only.

  • Copper is cost-effective and abundantly available as a biocidal coating agent for a wide range of material surfaces. Natural oxidation does not compromise the efficacy of copper, allowing it to maintain antimicrobial activity under prolonged exposure conditions. Furthermore, copper compounds exhibit a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against pathogenic yeast, both enveloped and non-enveloped types of viruses, as well as gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Contact killing of copper-coated surfaces causes the denaturation of proteins and damage to the cell membrane, leading to the release of essential components such as nucleotides and cytoplasm. Additionally, redox-active copper generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), which cause permanent cell damage through enzyme deactivation and DNA destruction. Owing to its robust stability, copper has been utilized in diverse forms, such as nanoparticles, ions, composites, and alloys, resulting in the creation of various coating methods. This mini-review describes representative coating processes involving copper ions and copper oxides on various material surfaces, highlighting the antibacterial and antiviral properties associated with different oxidation states of copper.

  • The sintering process acquired ferromagnetic copper ferrite ceramic material with a small concentration of Ni ion at 1100 ℃ for 1 h. Previously, copper ferrite with Ni proportions powder was acquired by the wet chemical process according to the relation CuFe2-xNixO4 where x takes values 0.0, 0.015, 0.03, 0.04, and 0.05. The role of Ni ion in the copper ferrite structure was investigated by X-ray analysis, Scanning electron microscope, EDX analysis, and density measurements. The gamma-ray shielding properties for the fabricated CuFeNiO ceramics samples were evaluated using the Monte Carlo simulation method. The obtained results show an enhancement in the linear attenuation coefficient for the fabricated ceramics with increasing the insertions of Ni ions within the fabricated samples, where increasing the Ni ions concentration between 0 and 1.19 wt% increases the linear attenuation by between 1.581 and 1.771 cm-1 (at 0.103 MeV), 0.304-0.338 cm-1 (at 0.662 MeV), and 0.160-0.178 cm-1 (at 2.506 MeV), respectively. Simultaneously, the radiation protection efficiency for a 1 cm thickness of the fabricated samples increased between 14.8 and 16.3% with increasing the Ni ions between 0 and 1.19 wt%. Although the Ni doping concentration does not exceed 1.5 wt% of the total composition of the fabricated ceramics, the shielding capacity of the fabricated ceramics was enhanced by more than 11%, along the studied energy interval. Therefore, the fabricated samples can be used in gamma-ray shielding applications.

  • This experiment was carried out with the purpose of testing nickel and copper adsorption abilities of multi wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) and activated carbon. In the acidic condition, only MWCNT was effective for removing nickel and copper ion in the aqueous phase while activated carbon rarely remove them. The MWCNT and heavy metals adsorption reaction followed pseudo-first order kinetic. When the initial pH value was neutral (pH=7), nickel was rapidly removed by MWCNT and activated carbon in 4 hr (99.02 %, 80.30 %). Also, copper ion was rapidly removed by both adsorbents in 4 hr when the initial pH was 7 (100 %, 99.73 %). Increasing of adsorbent dosages affect the pH evolution and heavy metal ions removal (0 ~ 99%). Also, oxidation pretreatment enhanced the adsorption efficiency of MWCNT.

  • The design and development of fluorescent chemosensors have recently been intensively explored for sensitive and specific detection of environmentally and biologically relevant metal ions in aqueous solution and living cells. Herein, we report the photophysical results of rhodamine B based fluorogenic and chromogenic receptor for selective copper detection in the complete organic or mixed aqueous-organic media at neutral pH under ambient condition. The ligand exhibited the remarkable increment in the fluorescence emission and UV-visible absorption signal intensities at 587 and 547 nm, respectively, on induction of copper ion while the ligand solution remain completely silent on addition of varieties of other metal ions.

  • In this study, DNA-templated copper nanoclusters (DNA-CuNCs) were used to detect exonuclease III (Exo III) activity, which is important for the diagnosis and therapy of several diseases. The results of this study showed that Exo III was affected by the concentrations of magnesium ions and sodium ions, and its optimal conditions for cleavage were $5mM\;Mg^{2+}$ and less than $25mM\;Na^+$. With a blunt-end DNA, more than 98% of DNA was digested by Exo III. As expected, with two or four cytosines in the terminal position of a 4-base overhanging DNA such as 5'-GGCC-3' and 5'-CCCC-3', there was little cleavage by Exo III compared with a blunt-end DNA.

  • In this study, the adsorption behaviors of mercury ions on the electroless Cu-plated activated carbons have been investigated. The amount of copper on activated carbons have been confirmed by atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). The surface properties of the ACs studied have been characterized by using Boehm's titration method and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).Experimental results showed the adsorption capacity of mercury ions was increased as the electroless Cu plating. This was probably due to the introduction of copper on ACs leaded to an increase in the surface basicity.
