In this present study, Castanea crenata was found as an excellent biosorbent for the removal capability of copper ions among four different wood wastes (Castanea crenata, Pinus densiflora, Larix kaemoferi and Robinia pseudoacaia). Also, the removal efficiencies of 5, 10, 20, 40 and 50 mg/L copper ions using Castanea crenata from aqueous solution were investigated. The most effective particle size of Castanea crenata for removing 5 mg/L copper ions was found to be $43{\sim}63{\mu}m$. When the concentration of Castanea crenata increased, the removal efficiencies of copper ions were enhanced. In addition, when the 0.8 g/100 mL of Castanea crenata was used for 30 min, the removal efficiencies of 20 and 40 mg/L copper ions were 99% and 85%, respectively. Moreover, the chemical treatment of Castanea crenata with 1 M sodium acetate was required to improve the removal ability for 50 mg/L copper ions. Meanwhile, 1 M hydrochloric acid was selected as the optimal desorption agent with 93% desorption efficiency of copper ions for recycling of modified Castanea crenata. Therefore, these experimental results could be employed as economical and practical engineering data for the development of copper removal processes.
Geology of the Zbezkazgan copper deposit in Kazhkstan is mainly composed of Permian and Carboniferous sedimenary rocks in which copper minerals are mainly contained in grey sandstone of Carboniferous age. There are 28 layers of copper ore bodies in Zbezkazgan suite. Thickness of the ore bodies ranges from one to 35 meters, grade of the crude ore ranges from 2 to 5 wt % Cu and the extension of the orebodies is 5 to 7 km. Microscopic study on specimens from the Zbezkazgan ore deposit has exposed clues to understand the origin of this deposit. Alternatively deposited grey sandstone and red sandstone are mainly composed of quartz and feldspar grains. A big difference between the grey sandstone and the red sandstone is in grain size, the former is larger than the latter. Chalcocites as main copper minerals have cemented through grain boundary. It is assumed that quartz, feldspar and copper were derived from granitoid in which copper mineralization had taken place before exposing to weathering. The chalcocites were precipitated by a sudden change of geochemical condition (Eh, pH, temperature, etc.) of fluid which had carried quartz, feldspars, copper ions and sulphate during formation of grey sandstones. The copper ions and sulphate were stable in fluid during sedimentation of oxidation environment, however, the copper ions were no more stable at the reduced environment and changed to stable forms to precipitate copper minerals by reaction of copper ions and hydrogen sulfides. This chemical precipitation of copper minerals in the sandstone attributes to the assumption of hydrothermal origin on this sedimentary origined deposit.
Microfiltration/ultrafiltration (MF/UF) Adsorptive polyamide-6 (PA-6) membranes were prepared using wet phase inversion process. The prepared PA-6 membranes are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), porosity and swelling degree. In this study, the membranes performance has examined by adsorptive removal of copper ions from aqueous solutions in a batch adsorption mode. The $PA-6/H_2O$ membranes display sponge like and highly porous structures, with porosities of 41-73%. Under the conditions examined, the adsorption experiments have showed that the $PA-6/H_2O$ membranes had a good adsorption capacity (up to 120-280 mg/g at the initial copper ion concentration ($C_0$) = 680 mg/L, pH7), fast adsorption rates and short adsorption equilibrium times (less than 1.5-2 hrs) for copper ions. The fast adsorption in this study may be attributed to the high porosities and large pore sizes of the $PA-6/H_2O$ membranes, which have facilitated the transport of copper ions to the adsorption. The results obtained from the study illustrated that the copper ions which have adsorbed on the polyamide membranes can be effectively desorbed in an Ethylene dinitrilotetra acetic acid Di sodium salt ($Na_2$ EDTA) solution from initial concentration (up to 92% desorption efficiency) and the PA-6 membranes can be reused almost without loss of the adsorption capacity for copper ions. The results obtained from the study suggested that the $PA-6/H_2O$ membranes can be effectively applied for the adsorptive removal of copper ions from aqueous solutions.
This study used a packed column reactor and a horizontal flow mesh reactor to examine the removal of copper ions from aqueous solutions using pine bark, a natural adsorbent prepared from Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora). Both equilibrium and nonequilibrium adsorption experiments were conducted on copper ion concentrations of 10mg/L, and the removals of copper ions at equilibrium were close to 95%. Adsorption of copper ions could be well described by both the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms. The bark was treated with nitric acid to enhance efficiency of copper removal, and sorption capacity was improved by about 48% at equilibrium; mechanisms such as ion exchange and chelation may have been involved in the sorption process. A pseudo second-order kinetic model described the kinetic behavior of the copper ion adsorption onto the bark. Regeneration with nitric acid resulted in extended use of spent bark in the packed column. The horizontal flow mesh reactor allowed approximately 80% removal efficiency, demonstrating its operational flexibility and the potential for its practical use as a bark filter reactor.
A two-step recovery method was developed to produce copper powders from copper chloride waste solution as byproducts of MoO$_3$ leaching process. The first step consisted of replacing noble copper ions with external Fe$^{3+}$ ions which were formed by dissolving iron scraps in the copper chloride waste solution. The replaced copper ions were subsequently precipitated as copper powders. The second step was cementation of entire solution mixture to separate (pure) copper powders from aqueous solution of iron chloride. Cementation process variables of temperature, time, and added amount of iron scraps were optimized by using design of experiment method and individual effects on yield and efficiency of copper powder recovery were investigated. Copper powders thus obtained from cementation process were further characterized using various analytical tools such as XRD, SEM-EDS and laser diffraction and scattering methods.Cementation process necessitated further purification of recovered copper powders and centrifugal separation method was employed, which successfully yielded copper powders of more than 99% purity and average 1$\sim$2$\mu$m in size.

Plating wastewater containing various heavy metals can be produced by several industries. Specifically, we focused on the removal of copper (Cu2+) and nickel (Ni+) ions from the plating wastewater because all these ions are strictly regulated when discharged into watershed in Korea. The application of both nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) technologies for the treatment of wastewater containing copper and nickel ions to reduce fresh water consumption and environmental degradation was investigated. In this work, the removal of copper (Cu2+) and nickel (Ni+) ions from synthetic water was studied on pilot scale remove by before using two commercial nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis(RO) spiral-wound membrane modules (NE2521-90 and RE2521-FEN by Toray Chemical). The influence of main operating parameters such as feed concentration on the heavy metals rejection and permeate flux of both membranes, was investigated. Synthetic plating wastewater samples containing copper ($Cu^{2+}$) and nickel ($Ni^{2+}$) ions at various concentrations(1, 20, 100, 400 mg/L) were prepared and subjected to treatment by NF and RO in the pilot plant. The results showed that NF, RO process, with 98% and 99% removal for copper and nickel, respectively, could achieve high removal efficiency of the heavy metals.

An 8-hydroxyquinoline compound that was synthesized with 8-hydroxyquinoline-2-carboxaldehyde and 4-aminoantipyrine was investigated for use as the sensing material of a fiber-optic copper ion sensor in an aqueous environment. The experiment was conducted with a fiber-optic measurement system, in order to evaluate the relationship between the absorbance peak and copper ion concentration. The synthesized derivative exhibited a (highly selective) chromogenic phenomenon for copper ions among various metal ions in an aqueous environment and showed a specific absorbance peak at a wavelength of 530 nm for copper ions. The effect of mercury ions was investigated to evaluate the selectivity of the prepared synthesized derivatives toward Cu ions. The absorbance was measured at various concentration ratios of Cu and Hg ions (Cu:Hg ratios from 0.05 to 20), and it was found that the absorbance at 530 nm tended to increase with increasing Cu ion concentration. The experimental results also showed the linear relationship between the logarithmic concentration of copper ions and the specific absorbance peak at a wavelength of 530 nm. These results indicate that the synthesized 8-hydroxyquinoline compound has selectivity for copper ions and can be used as a sensing material for fiber-optic copper ion sensors.
PVA-D2EHPA/TOPO beads containing two extractants, di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) and trioctylphoshine oxide (TOPO) were prepared for the removal of copper ions from aqueous solution. The prepared PVA-D2EHPA/TOPO beads were characterized by SEM and FT-IR. The removal characteristics of copper ions by PVA-D2EHPA/TOPO beads was investigated using batch and continuous systems. In batch experiments, the maximum removal capacity calculated from Langmuir isotherm model was 18.6 mg/g and the optimal pH was in the range of 4.5~6. The continuous experiments showed that the removal capacity of copper ions increased with increasing inlet copper ion concentrations and bed heights, but decreased with increasing inlet flow rates.

Electrodialysis (ED) is used in wastewater treatment, during the processing and recovery of beneficial materials, to produce usable water. In this study, sulfate and chlorine ions, which are the anions majorly used for electroplating, were studied as factors affecting the recovery of copper, nickel and water from wastewater by electrodialysis. Although the removal rates of copper and nickel ions were slightly higher with the use of chlorine ions than of sulfate ions, the removal efficiencies were above 99.9% under all experimental conditions. The metal ions of the plating wastewater flowed through the ion exchange membrane of the diluate tank and the concentrate tank while all the water moved together due to electro-osmosis. The migration of water from the diluate tank to the concentrate tank was higher in the presence of a monovalent chloride ion compared to that of a divalent sulfate ion. When sulfate was the anion used, the recoveries of copper and nickel increased by about 25% and 30%, respectively, as compared to the chloride ion. Therefore, when divalent ions such as sulfate are present in the electrodialysis, it is possible to reduce the movement amount of water and highly concentrate the copper and nickel in the plating wastewater.
Adsorption on goethite of individual component from a solution containing phosphate, sulfate, or copper ion was investigated. Competitive adsorption in the binary and ternary solution systems composed of phosphate, sulfate, and copper ions was also investigated. In competitive adsorption systems with phosphate and sulfate ions, the presence of phosphate ion reduced the adsorption of sulfate ion largely. On the other hand, the presence of sulfate ion caused only a small decrease in phosphate adsorption. This result suggests that phosphate ion is a stronger competitor for adsorption on goethite than sulfate ion, which is consistent with the higher affinity of phosphate for the surface compared to sulfate ion. Compared to the results from single-sorbate systems, adsorption of copper ion in the binary system of sulfate ion and copper ion was found to be enhanced in the presence of sulfate ion. Addition of sulfate ion to the binary system of copper ion and phosphate ion resulted in a small enhancement in copper sorption. This result implies that the presence of sulfate ion promotes adsorption of the ternary complex FeOHCuSO$_4$. The adsorption isotherms could be well described by the Langmuir adsorption equation.
